Résumé : While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few 'hyperdominant' species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of forest function is even more concentrated in a few species than is dominance of tree abundance, with only ≈1% of Amazon tree species responsible for 50% of carbon storage and productivity. Although those species that contribute most to biomass and productivity are often abundant, species maximum size is also influential, while the identity and ranking of dominant species varies by function and by region.

The Amazon river basin has been recently affected by extreme climatic events, such as the exceptional drought of 2005, with significant impacts on human activities and ecosystems. In spite of the importance of monitoring freshwater stored and moving in such large river basins, only scarce measurements of river stages and discharges are available and the signatures of extreme drought conditions on surface freshwater dynamics at the basin scale are still poorly known. Here we use continuous multisatellite observations of inundation extent and water levels between 2003 and 2007 to monitor monthly variations of surface water storage at the basin scale. During the 2005 drought, the amount of water stored in the river and floodplains of the Amazon basin was ~130 km3 (~70%) below its 2003-7 average. This represents almost a half of the anomaly of minimum terrestrial water stored in the basin as estimated using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data.

(Biographical) From Wikipedia for H. G. de Lisser, from 29 June 2013: Herbert George de Lisser CMG (9 December 1878 - 19 May 1944) was a Jamaican journalist and author. He has been called "one of the most conspicuous figures in the history of West Indian literature". De Lisser was born in Falmouth, Jamaica, and attended William Morrison's Collegiate School in Kingston. He started work at the Institute of Jamaica at the age of 14. Three years later he joined the Jamaica Daily Gleaner, of which his father was editor, as a proofreader, and two years later became a reporter on the Jamaica Times. In 1903, De Lisser became assistant editor of the Gleaner and was editor within the year. He wrote several articles for the paper every day. He also produced a novel or non-fiction book every year, beginning in 1913 with Jane: A Story of Jamaica, significant for being the first West Indian novel to have a central black character. Another famous novel of his, The White Witch of Rosehall (1929), is linked to a legend of a haunting in Jamaica. De Lisser also wrote several plays. In December 1920 he began publishing an annual magazine, Planters' Punch. De Lisser devoted much time and effort to the revival of the Jamaican sugar industry and represented Jamaica at a number of sugar conferences around the world. He was also general secretary of the Jamaica Imperial Association, honorary president of the Jamaica Press Association, and chairman of the West Indian section of the Empire Press Union. He was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 1920 New Year Honours.

Résumé : The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Cd-109). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within R maximus tissues. Both species showed a high retention capacity for Cd (biological half-life, T-b1/2 > 4 months), suggesting efficient mechanisms of detoxification and storage in both species. The digestive gland was found to be the main storage organ of Cd in the two scallops regardless of the exposure pathway. However, Cd was stored differently within this organ according to the species considered: 40% of the total Cd was found in the soluble cellular fraction in C. varia whereas this soluble fraction reached 80% for P. maximus. This suggests that the two species displayed different Cd detoxification/storage mechanisms. Finally, the present study has determined the relative contribution of the different exposure pathways to global Cd bioaccumulation for the two scallop species. Results clearly show that for both species, food constitutes the major accumulation pathway, contributing for >99% and 84% of the global Cd bioaccumulation in C. varia and R maximus, respectively. This work confirms the previous assumption, derived from a bibliographic overview, that dietary pathway plays a prevalent role in metal bioaccumulation in Pectinidae. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Résumé : Karst systems are the most important groundwater reservoirs in Mediterranean areas. Their structure and functioning are complex and not well known because of the high heterogeneity created and organised by groundwater flow. Water storage entities and water storage changes within remain difficult to assess by direct measurement and modelling. Geodetic monitoring is here used to constrain and bring original insights on karst system functioning. The Durzon karst system (Larzac plateau, Southern France) is monitored by several geodetic techniques: - Monthly absolute gravity measurements at three sites - Time-lapse surface to depth gravity measurements - Time-lapse microgravity surveying - Continuous long base hydrostatic tiltmeter monitoring at two sites Absolute gravity monitoring complemented with relative gravity surveys allows quantification of water storage changes on the studied karst system. Interannual water storage changes as detected by gravity are ~400 mm in amplitude. These storage changes are shown to occur in the epikarst and infiltration zone in certain areas. Water storage variations spatial heterogeneity is also demonstrated on the karst system. Tilt measurements monitor fast and slow infiltration processes within the karst fractured media. Karst system geodetic monitoring brings both quantitative and integrated hydrologic knowledge. Such methods could be applied to other karst aquifer studies.
Les aquifères karstiques constituent l'essentiel des ressources en eau souterraine sur le pourtour de la Méditerranée. Leur structure et leur fonctionnement sont complexes et mal connus à cause du processus de karstification qui hiérarchise la circulation hydrodynamique en leur sein. La localisation du stockage de l'eau et de ses variations au sein de tels aquifères est difficile à mesurer et à modéliser. Nous utilisons les outils de la géodésie pour apporter de nouvelles contraintes sur le fonctionnement hydrologique et les variations de stock d'eau en milieu karstique. Ainsi, le système karstique du Durzon, (Causse du Larzac, France) fait l'objet d'un suivi par plusieurs méthodes géodésiques incluant: - Des mesures de gravimétrie absolue en trois sites répétées de manière mensuelle ; - Des mesures répétées de gravimétrie relative entre la surface et la profondeur du karst ; - Des mesures répétées de microgravimétrie ; - Des mesures inclinométriques longue base en deux sites. Nous démontrons que le couplage entre la gravimétrie absolue et relative permet d'appréhender les variations de stock d'eau sur le bassin d'alimentation étudié. Les variations inter-anuelles observées sont de l'ordre de 400 mm, et nous montrons que celles-ci s'opèrent dans certaines zones au sein des horizons supérieurs du karst : épikarst et zone d'infiltration. Une forte hétérogénéité spatiale des variations de stockage est aussi mise en évidence à l'échelle du bassin d'alimentation. Les mesures inclinométriques permettent de suivre les phénomènes d'infiltration rapide et lente dans la masse karstique fracturée. Le suivi géodésique de ce système karstique permet d'apprécier quantitativement et de façon intégrée son fonctionnement hydrologique et pourra être transposé pour l'étude d'autres aquifère karstiques.

Her present place of abode is St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands where she taught English at the Charlotte Amalie High School before retiring in 2007. She has had several poems and short stories published in Caribbean Journals over the years."
