This article examines the drug and AIDS movement in the United States of the mid-1980s, particularly the one that developed in New York City. Within social movement theory, the “political opportunity” perspective seems appropriate to analyze such a movement; however, unlike what this model suggests, it is contended that “scientific and legal opportunities” rather than “political opportunities” account for the movement’s relative success between the mid-1980s and the mid-1990s.
