Université des Antilles Description : Patricia Donatien est Maitre de Conférences habilitée à diriger des recherches à l'Université des Antilles. Elle a publié des essais et de nombreux articles sur la littérature et les arts caribéens. Patricia Donatien est aussi artiste peintre. Elle explique que lorsque l'Atelier 45 est créé par de jeunes artistes martiniquais au lendemain de la deuxième guerre mondiale c'est dans le tumulte d'une prise de conscience mondiale de l'emprise coloniale sur les nations et sur les peuples non européens. C'est en réaction à cette domination économique, politique et culturelle que de nombreux mouvements se forment aussi bien en Inde, en Afrique que dans la Caraïbe. Pour les jeunes consciences noires de l'époque, un seul leitmotiv exister et exister par soi et non dans l'imitation de l'autre. Cependant, dans les Antilles françaises le poids colonial est lourd et malgré les cris d'une avant-garde composée d'Aimé Césaire, des soeurs Nardal et d'autres, la création littéraire et plastique a du mal à s'affirmer. L'Atelier 45 sera donc un premier pas, mais un pas décisif qui marquera toute l'histoire des arts plastiques en Martinique. Un cri dans la torpeur et l'obscurité esthétique qui engangent la Martinique d'alors. Université des Antilles Description : Dès le milieu du XIXe siècle, le Panama, terre à identités multiples, serre de métissage, d'hybridations, de « créolisation », a connu de nombreuses vagues d'immigration. Des milliers d'afro-antillais originaires de Trinidad, Jamaïque, Barbade, Guadeloupe, Martinique, entre autres, y débarquèrent à la fin du XIXe siècle pour l'édification de ce fameux Canal, attirés par l'offre d'une bonne rémunération ne nécessitant pas de qualification ou de compétences particulières. Ainsi le Panama, une des nations d'Amérique centrale ayant gardé un fort lien historique avec l'Afrique et la Caraïbe, est apparue aux yeux des Caribéens comme un véritable eldorado. Au fil du temps, sa réputation s'est consolidée dans l'esprit de générations de migrants qui détenaient leurs identités, leurs musiques et leurs langues dans leurs bagages immatériels. Les ancrages historiques et culturels ont fait traverser ces rythmes musicaux dans les imaginaires des différentes populations émigrantes à travers la mer des Caraïbes. Sous l'influence de la créolisation, des fusions de ces cadences ont été à l'origine d'un reggae espagnol à Colon au Panama, nommé par la suite Reggaeton qui deviendra miroir des représentations socioculturelles de la jeunesse latino-américaine et caribéenne, dessinant les contours d'une espérance utopique ou messianique. Castleton Botanical Garden in Saint Mary, Jamaica was established on November 19, 1862 as a relocation site for the Bath Botanical Garden, located in Bath, Saint Thomas, which began to surfer after frequent flooding by the Sulfur River in the 19th century. The Castleton Gardens are located on both sides of Junction Road. Many species of plant specimens in the garden came from Kew Gardens in London, England. Plants pictured include ferns and crotons. The Garden of Remembrance, pictured in the foreground, houses a stone cenotaph, a monument which serves as a memorial to Bahamians who lost their lives in World Wars I and II. In the background is the building currently known as the Ansbacher House, which is the home of Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited. Previously the building housed the Bahamas International Trust Company Limited, known as “BITCO”, which was established in 1957.
