Two steel pan instrument makers are hammering the surfaces of drums to make the range of sound for steel pan instruments. One of the men is hammering a white steel drum, while the other is in the distance near red steel drums. These particular steel pans are made from used steel oil drums. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. In the yard are other used steel oil drums, white metal steel pan stands, and many breadfruit trees. In the background are buildings, some made of wood with zinc paneled roofs. There is also a poster advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra, a steel band active during the 1960s and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Some of the notices in the yard read as follows: "Notice don't sit stand lean or prop on the stands," "We are the greatest," "Notice absolutely no unnecessary coasting in the yard." Steel pan music, which evolved from African drum music, originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century and is often a featured instrument during Carnival. As one of the national emblems of Trinidad and Tobago, steel pans were traditionally made from used steel oil drums or steel containers. The container’s head is concave and the playing surface is divided into convex sections by slants to make the pan's range of sounds. In this image are used steel oil drums, some steel pans with the Shell Oil Company logo and the word "Invaders," painted white metal steel pan stands, and breadfruit trees. One poster is advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra. Other signs includes phrases such as: "We are the greatest" and "Notice there is to be no unnecessary coasting in the yard." This image shows young men playing steel pan instruments while standing in front of steel oil drums decorated with the Texaco logo and the word Astronauts. The Texaco Astronauts steel band, popular during the 1960s, were sponsored by Texaco, an oil company. In the distance are pedestrians on a nearby street. In the garden, near the practicing band, are empty tables and chairs on a gravel path. Mango, palm, and various trees grow in the garden.

Résumé : (Biographical) In Vodou ceremonies, drums and other percussion instruments enable devotees to establish contact with the lwa (deities). The lwa are divided into several nations, the two main groupings of which are Rada and Petwo. This basic division is reflected in drum ensembles. Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Groups dance down streets and dress in paper-fringed costumes. The musicians often use traditional instruments such as goat skin drums and cowbells.

Walker’s Cay, located near a barrier reef, is the northern most island in the Bahamas. This image features the boat “Isabella” as it is anchored near a dock. The "Isabella" belonged to John Richard Yeend, also known as Captain Jack R. Yeend. During February of 1957, “Isabella” travelled to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. A man is standing on the boat. On the dock are five men and some steel drums. Slide labeled Wharf Walker Cay Feb '57.

Clarke’s Court, operated by Grenada Distillers Limited, is a rum distillery located in Woodlands Valley, Saint George, Grenada and has been in operation since 1937. Clarke’s Court is also the island’s largest distillery. This image shows a pile of sugar cane husks on the grounds of Clarke’s Court. One of the factory buildings with a zinc roof has steel drums inside lined against its wire fence. Slide labeled Rum Factory Grenada.

Steel pan music is most often associated with Trinidad and Tobago, where the art form originated, but the music is also popular in Barbados. Steel pans are made from oil drums that have had the drum head shaped with slopes and slants to make music note sounds. These drums have been painted blue and yellow to reflect the Barbados flag colors. This steel pan band includes a musician using shak-shaks (similar to maracas), which is a hollow rattle used in the Lesser Antilles. Cockspur Fine Rum box, pictured, has been produced in Barbados since 1884, when Danish seaman Valdemar Hanschell created the rum, which is distilled from fermented molasses. The cruise terminal, pictured, would contain departments to manage cruise passengers, such as Immigration and Customs. Slide labeled Barb 8.
