Résumé : Some major challenges for geophysicists and structural geologists using three-dimensional boundary element method codes (3D-BEM) are: (1) reducing the amount of memory required to solve large and dense systems and (2) incorporation of inequality constraints such as traction inequality constraints (TIC) and displacement inequality constraints (DIC). The latter serves two purposes. First, for example, inequality constraints can be used to simulate frictional slip (using TIC). Second, these constraints can prevent element interpenetration while allowing opening mode (using DIC). We have developed a method that simultaneously incorporates both types of functionality of the inequality constraints. We show that the use of an appropriate iterative solver not only avoids the allocation of significant memory for solving the system (allowing very large model computation and simplifying parallelization on multi-core processors), but also admits interesting features such as natural incorporation of TICs and DICs. Compared to other techniques of contact management (e.g., Lagrange multipliers, penalty method, or complementarity problem), this new simple methodology, which does not use any incremental trial-and-error procedures, brings more flexibility, while making the system more stable and less subject to round-off errors without any computational overhead. We provide validations and comparisons of the inequality constraints implementation using 2D analytical and numerical solutions.

In this paper, using the penalty method in conjunction with graph-convergence, we study the existence of solutions for a class of generalized variational inequalities with variational problem constraints. Our results extend, improve and develop some known results in this field. Our method of proofs is very simple and does not use the hemicontinuity nor the pseudo-continuity properties of monotone operators.

This paper is concerned with the simultaneous null controllability with constraint on the control, for a system of coupled linear heat equations. First, we show that, by means of a change of variable, a system of two linear heat equations with a same control can be rewritten in the form of a system of linear heat equations with a control function acting only in one equation. Then, we establish an observability inequality, and we state an appropriate Carleman estimate adapted to the constraint that we use to prove the main result.

Résumé : Different applications of linear elasticity in structural geology are presented in this thesis through the development of three types of numerical computer codes. The first one uses forward modeling to study displacement and perturbed stress fields around complexly faulted regions. We show that incorporating inequality constraints, such as static Coulomb friction, enables one to explain the angle of initiation of jogs in extensional relays. Adding heterogeneous material properties and optimizations, such as parallelization on multicore architectures and complexity reduction, admits more complex models. The second type deals with inverse modeling, also called parameter estimation. Linear slip inversion on faults with complex geometry, as well as paleo-stress inversion using a geomechanical approach, are developed. The last type of numerical computer code is dedicated to restoration of complexly folded and faulted structures. It is shown that this technique enables one to check balanced cross-sections, and also to retrieve fault chronology. Finally, we show that this code allows one to smooth noisy 3D interpreted faulted and folded horizons using geomechanics.
Différentes applications de l'élasticité linéaire en géologie structurale sont présentées dans cette thèse à travers le développement de trois types de codes numériques. Le premier utilise la modélisation directe pour étudier les déplacements et champs de contraintes autour de zones faillées complexes. On montre que l'ajout de contraintes inégalitaires, telles que la friction de Coulomb, permet d'expliquer l'angle d'initiation des dominos dans les relais extensifs. L'ajout de matériaux hétérogènes et d'optimisations, telles la parallélisation sur processeurs multi-coeurs ainsi que la réduction de complexité des modèles, permettent l'étude de modèles beaucoup plus complexes. Le second type de code numérique utilise la modélisation inverse, aussi appelée estimation de paramètres. L'inversion linéaire de déplacements sur les failles ainsi que la détermination de paléo-contraintes utilisant une approche géomécanique sont développées. Le dernier type de code numérique concerne la restauration de structures complexes plissées et faillées. Il est notamment montré qu'une telle méthode permet de vérifier l'équilibre de coupes géologiques, ainsi que de retrouver la chronologie des failles. Finalement, nous montrons que ce même code permet de lisser des horizons 3D faillés, plissés et bruités en utilisant la géomécanique.

Résumé : Cette thèse a pour objet l'étude de la contrôlabilité à zéro de systèmes d'équations aux dérivées partielles paraboliques, que l'on rencontre en physique, chimie ou en biologie. En chimie ou en biologie, ces systèmes modélisent l'évolution au cours du temps d'une concentration chimique ou de la densité d'une population (de bactéries, de cellules). Le but de la contrôlabilité à zéro est d'amener la solution du système à l'état nul à un temps donné T, en agissant sur le système à l'aide d'un contrôle. Nous recherchons donc un contrôle, de norme minimale, tel que la solution associée y vérifie y(T)=O dans le domaine Omega considéré. Les problèmes de contrôlabilité à zéro considérés dans cette thèse sont de trois types. Dans un premier temps, nous nous intéressons à la contrôlabilité à zéro avec un nombre fini de contraintes sur la dérivée normale de l'état, pour l'équation de la chaleur semi-linéaire. Puis, nous analysons la contrôlabilité simultanée à zéro avec contrainte sur le contrôle, pour un système linéaire de deux équations paraboliques couplées. Notre dernière étude concerne la contrôlabilité à zéro d'un système non linéaire de deux équations paraboliques couplées. Nous abordons ces problèmes de contrôlabilité principalement à l'aide d'inégalités de Carleman. En effet, l'étude des problèmes de contrôlabilité à zéro, et plus généralement de contrôlabilité exacte, peut se ramener à l'établissement d'inégalités d'observabilité pour le problème adjoint, conséquences d'inégalités de Carleman. Nous construisons le contrôle optimal en utilisant la méthode variationnelle et nous le caractérisons par un système d'optimalité
This thesis is devoted to the study of the null controllability of systems of parabolic partial differential equations, which we meet in physics, chemistry or in biology. In chemistry or in biology, the se systems model the evolution in time of a chemical concentration or the density of a population (of bacteria, cells). The aim of nu Il controllability is to lead the solution of the system to zero in a given time T, by acting on the system with a control. Thus we are looking for a control, of minimal norm, such as the associated solution y satisfies y(T)=O in the domain Omega under concern. We consider three types of null controllability problems in this thesis. At first, we are interested in the null controllability with afinite number of constraints on the normal derivative of the state, for the serni-Iinear heat equation. Then, we analyze the simultaneous null controllability with constraint on the control, for a linear system of two coupled parabolic equations. Our last study deals with the null controllability ofa non linear system oftwo coupled parabolic equations. We approach these controllability problems mainly by means of Carleman's inequalities. Indeed, the study of null controllability problems, and more generally exact controllability problems, is equivalent to obtain observability inequalities for the adjoint problem, consequences of Carleman's inequalities. We build the optimal controlusing the variationnal method and we characterize it by an optimality system

This paper is concerned with the study of a penalization-gradient algorithmfor solving variational inequalities, namely, find x ∈ C such that Ax, y − x ≥ 0 for all y ∈ C, where A : H → H is a single-valued operator, C is a closed convex set of a real Hilbert space H. Given Ψ : H → ∪ { ∞} which acts as a penalization function with respect to the constraint x ∈ C, and a penalization parameter βk, we consider an algorithm which alternates a proximal step with respect to ∂Ψ and a gradient step with respect to A and reads as xk I λkβk∂Ψ −1 xk−1 − λkAxk−1 . Under mild hypotheses, we obtain weak convergence for an inverse strongly monotone operator and strong convergence for a Lipschitz continuous and strongly monotone operator. Applications to hierarchical minimization and fixed-point problems are also given and the multivalued case is reached by replacing themultivalued operator by its Yosida approximatewhich is always Lipschitz continuous.

We consider the semilinear heat equation in a boundeddomain of R^m. We prove the null controllability of the systemwith a finite number of constraints on the normal derivative, whenthe control acts on a bounded subset of the domain. First, weshow that the problem can be transformed into a null controllabilityproblem with constraint on the control, for a linear system.Then, we use an appropriate observability inequality to solve thelinearized problem. Finally, we prove the main result by means ofa fixed-point method.
