John Stockdale John Stockdale ( London ) Résumé : In 1764 Italian artist Agostino Brunias visited the West Indies with Sir William Young, as his personal artist. Brunias returned to England about 1775, and emigrated to Dominica in 1784. Edwards defended slavery in his History, the second and later editions of which are illustrated with several pictures by Brunias. This print, however, probably depicts free men and women (they are better dressed than slaves). Brunias visions of noble savages and happy slaves are often reproduced, to this day.
