Compte tenu du contexte, l'agroécologie pourrait être une alternative pour éviter les pesticides. Ce terme désigne à la fois une science, des pratiques et un mouvement social. Il s'agit d'utiliser au maximum la nature comme facteur de production en maintenant ses capacités de renouvellement. L'agroécologie inclut des techniques pour restaurer la fertilité des sols, pour la gestion des ressources en eau et pour contrôler les adventices et les ravageurs.

Résumé : Research on natural insecticides has intensified with the spread of resistance to chemicals among insects, particularly disease vectors. To evaluate compounds, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published standardized procedures. However, those may be excessively compound-consuming when it comes to assessing the activity of natural extracts and pure compounds isolated in limited amount. As part of our work on the discovery of new mosquito larvicides from Amazonian plants, we developed a compound-saving assay in 5-ml glass tubes instead of WHO larval 100-m1 cups. Comparing activity of synthetic and natural chemicals validated the glass tube assay. Raw data, lethal doses that kill 50% (LD50) and 90% (LD90) at 24 and 48 h, were highly correlated (0.68 < R-2 < 0.96, P < 0.001, Pearson test) between cups and tubes. It was also established that 10 tubes (N = 50 larvae) provided the same level of sensitivity as 20 tubes (N= 100). This method proved suitable for rapid screening of natural extracts and molecules, identifying active compounds using 10 times less material than in the WHO protocol.

Résumé : Les États-Unis, en tant que puissance coloniale et avec le soutien du Parti populaire démocratique (PPD) dirigé par Luis Muñoz Marín, ont utilisé les sciences sociales pour présenter Porto Rico comme le cadre idéal pour penser les politiques publiques de la modernité et de l’industrialisation. L’Université de Porto Rico et le Centro de Investigaciones Sociales (CIS) deviendront entre 1940-1960 des vitrines pour la production et la légitimation de la science sociale étatsunienne. À partir de témoignages recueillis auprès de trois chercheurs clés de l’époque, cet article se propose de restituer les tensions de la pratique des sciences sociales, en période coloniale.
The United States, as a colonial power and with the support of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) led by Luis Muñoz Marín, used the social sciences to present Puerto Rico as the perfect setting for thinking modernity and industrialization through public policy. Between 1940-1960 the University of Puerto Rico and the Centro de Investigaciones Sociales (CIS) will become showcases for the production and legitimation of United States social science. From testimonies gathered of three key researchers of the time, this article proposes to restore the tensions of practicing social science in Puerto Rico within the colonial period.
