Université des Antilles Description : Le XVIIe siècle se caractérise par de nombreuses vagues migratoires. De nombreux Européens traversent l'Atlantique et s'installent dans les colonies britanniques d'Amérique qui deviennent leurs terres d'accueil. Des motivations religieuses seront à l'origine de ces départs forcés. Persécutés dans leurs pays d'origine, ces immigrés sont à la recherche d'une terre promise. Parmi ceux qui trouvent refuge dans les colonies britanniques d'Amérique, des Huguenots français. Les guerres de religion puis les persécutions dont ils vont être victimes sous Louis XIV vont condamner de nombreux Huguenots à l'exil. De nombreuses familles protestantes furent déportées vers les Antilles, à la recherche d'une terre promise où ils pourraient pratiquer leur religion en toute liberté et vivre selon leurs préceptes religieux. C'est ainsi que la Guadeloupe devint elle aussi une terre d'accueil pour de nombreuses familles protestantes, pour d'autres elle ne fut qu'un lieu de passage. Nous retracerons le parcours de ces Huguenots et tenterons de comprendre les raisons profondes de cette errance qui les a conduit sur des terres lointaines. Se sont-ils intégrés dans les colonies américaines à l'image des autres colons ? La Guadeloupe a-t-elle été pour eux une terre promise ? Ont-ils trouvé cette liberté religieuse tant recherchée?
