(Biographical) Aida García Alonso was Cuban. She attended Mexico's National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) where she got a degree in cultural anthropology. After the Cuban Revolution, García Alonso returned to Cuba. There she started to do ethnographic research in Las Yaguas, a series of slums in Havana. Her work coincided with the Cuban government's project of relocating Las Yaguas' dwellers to new houses built by the new regime. The result of her fieldwork was the book Manuela la Mexicana published by Casa de las Americas in 1968. In the 1970s, García Alonso was preparing a second edition. For this newer edition she prepared photographs and statistics on the people who used to live in Las Yaguas and was relocated. Fidel Castro's government censored the work, and García Alonso went into exile to Mexico in 1980, where she died in 2009. This digital collection includes the photographs, captions, and statistics that were to be included in the second edition of Manuela la Mexicana.

Résumé : On June 1892 by Hugh C. Macfarlane brought the first industry to the community of West Tampa. First operated by A. Del Pino and Company, it failed financially. In 1894 the O'Halloran Cigar Company occupied the building. On May 18, 1895, a bill passed Florida's legislature creating the municipality of West Tampa. Its first mayor was Fernando Figueredo, a prominent figure in the Cuban revolution.

Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, is made up of three distinct areas: the original Spanish settlement - Sevilla La Nueva, a British sugar plantation, and forested regions. The following preserved structures can be found at the site: the Governor’s castle, a Spanish sugar mill, an artisan workshop, and the remains of a Spanish settlement, a Spanish church, and a British great house. Christopher Columbus spent over a year marooned here after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. Slide labeled Jam. where Col. landed - Seville.

The red and white striped Folly Point Lighthouse was built in 1888 at the tip of the Folly Peninsula, near Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica. The Tower is constructed of masonry and is fire proof. It flashes a white light of two seconds duration followed by eight seconds of darkness. The light is visible for a distance of thirteen miles. In the background is a one-story white house. Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. In 1909, Steamboat Robert Fulton, pictured, went into service for the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948. In 1959, the steamboat was brought to land at Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. In this image, automobiles are parked next to the offices of Owens-Illinois Incorporated. Men are gathered near the end of the steamboat. Slide labeled Pay Day Owens Illinois Co. The French Antilles (Martinique, Saint Martin and Guadeloupe) and French Guiana are the French territories most affected by the HIV epidemic. Some population groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), especially those involved in transactional sex, are thought to be particularly vulnerable to HIV but few data exist to help characterize their health-related needs and thus implement relevant prevention interventions. To fill this knowledge gap, we used data collected from an HIV/AIDS Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviours and Practices survey conducted in 2012 among MSM living in the French Antilles and French Guiana and recruited through snowball sampling. Our objectives were to compare social and demographic characteristics and sexual behaviours between MSM engaging in transactional sex and MSM not engaging in transactional sex and to identify factors associated with transactional sex involvement using a logistic regression model. A total of 733 MSM were interviewed, 21% of whom reported to undergo transactional sex. Their behaviour and social and demographic characteristics were different from other MSMs’ and they were more exposed to factors that are recognized to potentiate HIVvulnerability, at the individual, community, network and structural levels. The variables positively associated with sex trade involvement were having ever consumed drug (OR = 2.84 [1.23–6.52]; p = .002), having a greater number of sex partners than the median (OR = 8.31 [4.84–14.30]; p < .001), having experienced intimate partner violence (OR = 1.72 [0.99–3.00]; p = .053) and having undergone physical aggression because of sexual orientation (OR = 2.84 [1.23–6.52];p = .014). Variables negatively associated with sex trade involvement were being older (OR = 0.93 [0.90–0.97] per year; p = .001), having a stable administrative situation (OR = 0.10 [0.06–0.19]; p < .001), having a stable housing (OR = 0.29 [0.15–0.55]; p < .001) and being employed full-time (OR = 0.29 [1.23–6.52]; p = .002).

A man on a bicycle riding away from the Black River post office and bank. The building houses a branch of the Government Savings Bank and the post office. The Government Savings Bank was established in 1870 and was opened daily. With the act of the 23rd of June 1973, the assets of the bank were used to establish the Workers Savings and Loan Bank. On the 31st of October 1671, Jamaica became the first British colony to establish a post office. This two story building has a zinc roof with fretwork and also sends telegraphs. UNLABELLED: ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health problem in French Guiana, with a mean of 3800 cases each year. A previous study in Camopi, an Amerindian village on the Oyapock River, highlighted the major contribution of environmental features to the incidence of malaria attacks. We propose a method for the objective selection of the best multivariate peridomestic landscape characterisation that maximises the chances of identifying relationships between environmental features and malaria incidence, statistically significant and meaningful from an epidemiological point of view. METHODS: A land-cover map, the hydrological network and the geolocalised inhabited houses were used to characterise the peridomestic landscape in eleven discoid buffers with radii of 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1000 metres. Buffer-based landscape characterisations were first compared in terms of their capacity to discriminate between sites within the geographic space and of their effective multidimensionality in variable space. The Akaike information criterion (AIC) was then used to select the landscape model best explaining the incidences of P. vivax and P. falciparum malaria. Finally, we calculated Pearson correlation coefficients for the relationships between environmental variables and malaria incidence, by species, for the more relevant buffers. RESULTS: The optimal buffers for environmental characterisation had radii of 100 m around houses for P. vivax and 400 m around houses for P. falciparum. The incidence of P. falciparum malaria seemed to be more strongly linked to environmental features than that of P. vivax malaria, within these buffers. The incidence of P. falciparum malaria in children was strongly correlated with proportions of bare soil (r = -0.69), land under high vegetation (r = 0.68) and primary forest (r = 0.54), landscape division (r = 0.48) and the number of inhabited houses (r = -0.60). The incidence of P. vivax malaria was associated only with landscape division (r = 0.49). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed methodology provides a simple and general framework for objective characterisation of the landscape to account for field observations. The use of this method enabled us to identify different optimal observation horizons around houses, depending on the Plasmodium species considered, and to demonstrate significant correlations between environmental features and the incidence of malaria.
