The inside of the castle has been entirely restored and is exactly as it was in Spanish times. Castillo de San Pedro del Morro was designed in 1637 by Giovanni Battista Antonelli (also known as Juan Battista Antonelli), a member of a Milanese family of military engineers, on behalf of the governor of the city, Pedro de la Roca de Borja, as a defense against raiding pirates. The Central Highway was commissioned by President Machado and presented and approved by the Cuban Congress in 1925. Construction began in 1927 The price of the construction was $75,870,000, or more than $107,000 per mile. (705.6 miles) The highway almost runs the entire length of the island from Pinar del Rio, all the way to Santiago de Cuba. It cover a distance of just over 700 miles. Morro Castle Spanish: Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro is a picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay in Havana, Cuba. Juan Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, was commissioned to design the structure. When it was built in 1589, Cuba was under the control of Spain. The Presidential Palace in Havana housed of all Cuban presidents from Mario García Menocal to Fulgencio Batista. It became the Museum of the Revolution during the years following the Cuban Revolution. The Spanish name is el Museo de la Revolución, and is located in the Old Havana section of Havana. On the bottom left of the photograph is a typical street which are very popular in the main cities of Cuba. The former Presidential Palace was designed by the Cuban architect Carlos Maruri and the Belgian architect Paul Belau and was inaugurated in 1920 by President Mario García Menocal. It remained the Presidential Palace until 1959. The building has Neo-Classical elements, and was decorated by Tiffany & Co. of New York. National Capitol Building in Havana, known simply as el Capitolio, was the seat of government in Cuba until after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. In 1925, Gerardo Machado was elected president. Soon afterward under the mandate of the legislature he commissioned a new design from the Cuban architects Raul Otero and Eugenio Raynieri. The previous, partially completed building was demolished and work began on the new building on 1 April 1926. Construction was overseen by the U.S. firm of Purdy and Henderson.
