![]() | Public use and Ecotourism Policies in Brazilian and Canadian Protected Areas Auteur(s) : Matheus, Fabricio Scarpeta Raimundo, Sidnei Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Brazil and Canada have two of the biggest protected area systems in the world, both of them based in the protected areas model established by the USA in the XIX century. However, they have distinct policies when it comes to public use and ecotourism inside those areas. Canadian guidelines have a greater focus on leisure and recreation activities, in a more permissive use of its resources with activities geared to large scale tourism. On the other hand, Brazil has a focus more limited on low-impact activities with a strong component of environmental education and restrictions of activities within its protected areas. From that approach, this article analyzes the Brazilian and the Canadian public policies for public use development inside protected areas and how they address the three main aspects of ecotourism: environmental conservation, environmental awareness of visitors and involvement of local community. ![]() | Integrating Sustainable Tourism Development in Coastal and Marine Zone Environment Auteur(s) : Marafa, Lawal Mohammed Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Tourism in marine and coastal areas is a complex phenomenon. Tourism in coastal areas brings along both positive and negative effects on the environment as a result of activities exerted upon such areas by proponents and tourists. While tourism development results in the modification of coastal environments, it can also flourish where such environments are left unmodified as the pristine nature of the environments attract visitors. Alternatively, in order for marine and coastal tourism to develop and continue to attract tourists, there is the need for an integrated approach that can be translated into a sustainable coastal tourism development. The aim of this paper therefore, is to postulate and develop a framework and guideline to be addressed by decision-makers for coastal areas. Frameworks for sustainable coastal tourism development and coastal zone management (CZM) are suggested taking into account the multifaceted nature of the coastal environment. Although Hong Kong epitomizes a successful tourism destination, alternative tourism is attractive as the diversity of habitats and life forms makes the Hong Kong coastal area unique. For the ecological richness to continue to provide avenues for alternative tourism, it is argued that such frameworks should be adaptable and implemented for a sustainable coastal tourism policy. ![]() | Sound production in Sciaenops ocellatus: Preliminary study for the development of acoustic cues in aquaculture Auteur(s) : Parmentier, Eric Tock, Jeremy Falguiere, Jean-claude Beauchaud, Marilyn Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The red drum Sciaenops ocellatus is an estuarine-dependent sciaenid that has supported important recreational and commercial fisheries for many years. Since the 1980s, this species has been farmed in different regions of the world and studies have been conducted to find natural ways to improve its culture. Sciaenops ocellatus is well known for making calls but studies on this characteristic have been mainly restricted to passive acoustics. The aim of this study was to provide acoustic-related information that could be useful in rearing practices. We have studied in detail fish calling characteristics, described their sound-producing mechanism and tested the recordings in different kinds of confinements (floating cages, concrete and fibreglass tanks). Contrary to previous studies, calls were recorded mainly in the morning, between 06:00 and 09:00. Sounds are made only by males; females do not have sound-producing apparatus. The anatomy, muscle ultrastructure data and calling characteristics show conclusively that calls result from the contraction of high speed muscles which are characterized by the very small diameter (7 μm) of the muscle cells. Preliminary results suggest sound characteristics can give information on the fish physiology but further studies are needed. The effects of resonance of fibreglass tanks are experimentally highlighted, showing unequivocally that all the characteristics of fish calls are completely distorted, even in big tanks (13 m3). These findings should be taken into account when using pre-recorded sounds in the rearing of this species because it can affect communication during courtship activity. ![]() | "Lo que el pueblo necesita". Turismo social y Peronismo. Throughout J.D. Peron’s first two terms in office (1946-1955), against the backdrop the so-called “welfare democratization” process, leisure and free time progressively gained momentum. Vacation habits in the middle and working classes became richer thanks to both public policies and civil initiatives. During this period, the National State not only re-adopted previous programs, but it also opened new channels favoring the entrance of the abovementioned sectors into the recreational-activity market. The purpose of this presentation is to analyze some of these policies, highlighting their reception by, and impact on, the middle and working classes. To this end, a methodological exercise will be carried out on the basis of a privileged source: the archives of the “Secretaría Técnica. Primera y Segunda Presidencia del General Juan Domingo Perón (1946 – 1955)”, a collection of documents summarizing the answer –by way of letters– of the populace to the State’s call during the elaboration of the second five-year plan.
