Two men making steel pan instruments in Trinidad ; The Bryant Slides Collection ; The Bryant Slides Collection, Trinidad Auteur(s) : Unknown ( Photographer ) Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location. Two steel pan instrument makers are hammering the surfaces of drums to make the range of sound for steel pan instruments. One of the men is hammering a white steel drum, while the other is in the distance near red steel drums. These particular steel pans are made from used steel oil drums. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. In the yard are other used steel oil drums, white metal steel pan stands, and many breadfruit trees. In the background are buildings, some made of wood with zinc paneled roofs. There is also a poster advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra, a steel band active during the 1960s and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Some of the notices in the yard read as follows: "Notice don't sit stand lean or prop on the stands," "We are the greatest," "Notice absolutely no unnecessary coasting in the yard." Effect of lipid level in a compound diet on the development of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larvae Auteur(s) : Buchet, Vincent Zambonino, Jose-luis Cahu, Chantal Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Red drum larvae were fed from day 11 to day 24 post-hatch, with Artemia (LP group) or two isoproteinic-formulated diets with varying lipid levels, 15% (L15 group) and 30% (L30 group). The lipid fraction was composed of a mixture of cod liver oil and soy lecithin. Larvae fed Artemia exhibited the greatest length, L30 diet induced a larvae length significantly greater than that obtained with L15 diet (P < 0,05). No difference was observed in larvae survival among the three dietary groups. The increase in dietary lipid concentration led to an increase in amylase and trypsin secretion levels in 24-day-old larvae. The pancreatic secretion level measured in L30 group was close to that of LP group, suggesting that the maturation of the pancreatic functions was normally developed. Red drum larvae fed the diet containing the higher lipid content (L30) exhibited a more developed brush border membrane digestion in the intestine than larvae fed L15 diet (P < 0.05). Phospholipase A2 was stimulated by the increase of phospholipids in the diet, but no difference was observed for lipase between the two compound diet-fed groups; the LP group exhibited the lowest lipase activity. A plateau in lipase activity may have occurred in red drum larvae from 15% fat level in the diet, suggesting that the maximal lipase activity was reached with 12% neutral lipid in the diet. The positive effects observed with high dietary fat may be due to the phospholipid fraction of the lipid mixture used. Development of phytotoxicity bioassay for soil amendment products from organic waste recycling ; Développement d'un essai biologique de phytotoxicité pour les produits d'amendement du sol issus du recyclage des déchets organiques Auteur(s) : Lopez, Francis Année de publication : Loading the player... Éditeur(s) : University of West Indies, Barbados Université des Antilles. Service commun de la documentation Extrait de : 52e congrès annuel de la Société caribéenne des plantes alimentaires / 52nd annual meeting of the Caribbean food crops society (CFCS), du 10 au 16 juillet 2016. INRA, CFCS Description : A germination bioassay was developed to screen for potential phytotoxicity of soil amendment products from organic waste recycling. In phase 1 of the study, nine soil amendment products were applied as mulches on 3- to 5-week-old tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum L.HA3019?) planted in 4L pots. Plant growth was reduced by the less mature mulch materials. Using lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.New Red Fire?) as the test species, a laboratory germination test was developed in phase 2 with aqueous extracts from a non-phytotoxic (safe) and a phytotoxic product identified in phase 1. Extracts were obtained by soaking 10g of air-dried product in 90 mL distilled water for 24h at 25°C. Diluted extracts (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) were applied to lettuce seeds sown on filter paper in petri-dishes and germination was monitored for 5 days, confirming the results from phase 1. In phase 3, the bioassay developed in phase 2 was used to test three previously untested local products and one imported product. Two of the local products were comparable to the imported product. Results obtained in phase 3 were confirmed using the mulch test as described in phase 1. Hence, the germination bioassay can be a useful tool for quality control in the production of(safe) soil amendment products from organic waste recycling. Red-drum (Sciaenops ocellata) farming in Martinique: a new prospect for Caribbean marine aquaculture ? Auteur(s) : Paquotte, Philippe Éditeur(s) : Communication at the IIFET Conference Tromso 1998 Résumé : (not controled OCR) like most other caribbean islands, martinique suffers a reduction in fisheries resources and is now a net importer of seafood products since no major expansion of aquaculture production has been done. nevertheless, this island has numerous assets for marine aquaculture development : tropical clean waters, developed infrastructures and market channels, financial support for research, training and extension due to its tight political and economic connection with france. red drum is a subtropical fish introduced in martinique in 1985 from the south of usa for aquaculture purposes. from 1987 to 1993, ifremer worked on rearing techniques in martiniquan conditions. once the farming techniques were perfected, questions raised about red drum marketing potential and of economic viability of red drum farms in order to attract investments and entrepreneurs. that is the reason why a market analysis and a financial analysis have been carried out. the results of these studies indicate that martiniquan fish farming could be profitable, due to the rapid build-up of the facilities and to the sho rt production cycles. the good quality of infrastructures in martinique, the high purchase power of the population in comparison with most caribbean islands and the frequent air links with europe are important comparative advantages. the market analysis has revealed a good potential on the domestic market thanks to the development of the supermarkets, but has underlined the price constraint. for the french market too, production costs have to be lowered in order to compete on a market dominated by salmon. Ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract of marine fish larvae Auteur(s) : Zambonino, Jose-luis Cahu, Chantal Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Marine fish larvae undergo major morphological and cellular changes during the first month of life. The ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract combines these two aspects of the larval development and is very interesting in that the timing of functional changes appears genetically hard-wired. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the gastrointestinal development process in marine fish larvae, with particular attention to three species: sea bass; red drum; and sole, since the description of gut maturation in fish larvae was initiated during the last decade with these species. During the early stages, marine fish larvae exhibit particular digestive features. Concerning the exocrine pancreas, amylase expression decreases with age from the third week post-hatching in sea bass and red drum (approximately 400 degree days), whereas expression of other enzymes (trypsin, lipase, phospholipase A2...) increases until the end of the larva period. Moreover, secretory function of the exocrine pancreas progressively develops and becomes efficient after the third week of life. Concerning the intestine, enzymes of the enterocyte cytosol (in particular peptidase) have higher activity in young larvae than in older. Approximately in the fourth week of post-hatching development in sea bass, red drum and sole larvae, the cytosolic activities dramatically decline concurrently with a sharp increase in membranous enzyme activities of the brush border, such as alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase N, maltase... This process characterises the normal maturation of enterocytes in developing fish larvae and also in other vertebrates' species. The establishment of an efficient brush border membrane digestion represents the adult mode of digestion of enterocytes. This paper also describes the role of diet on the development of the gastrointestinal tract. Indeed, the maturational process of digestive enzyme can be enhanced, stopped, or delayed depending on the composition of the diet. Remplacement total des artémia par des microparticules inertes dans l'élevage larvaire de l'ombrine Sciaenops ocellatus en Martinique Auteur(s) : Petton, Bruno Falguiere, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 59th Annual Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute Résumé : In most of marine fishes cultured, larvae in their early development are fed with live prey (rotifer and/or artemia). In hatcheries, culture of these preys is labour consuming, needs specific facilities and represent an important part of production cast. On the other hand, world artemia production is subjected to fluctuation of harvest in the wild which could Iimit fish farming industry in the near future. A dried formula adapted to marine fish larvae has been perfected by Ifremer's center of Brest (France) and is distributed by a feeding company since 1999. This artificial microbound diet has been successfully tested on several temperate fishes such as European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) or European seabream (Sparus aurata) in a co-feeding (i.e. artemia and dried diet) strategy. Experiments described here were carried out ta evaluate the performances obtained during total substitution of artemia by this diet in Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larval culture. ln 2004 and 2005, four experiments were conducted on feed technology aspects (experimental or industrial manufacturing), weaning strategy (direct or co-feeding) and feed distribution method (prototypes or classical self feeder) in comparison to the standardized method using live preys. At the end of larval phase (day 15) and at day 30, end of nursery phase (0.6 g), survival relative to control (RTC) was respectively 96.9% and 111.0% in the best treatment. Concerning growth, the weight RTC reached at day 15 and day 30 was respectively 82.8% and 72.4%. However, it is important to note that rearing protocols have to be adapted ta the use of these micro pellets in order toprevent degradation of culture quality. These results show that this new product can be applied on industrial scale in private hatcheries. But further research is needed ta evaluate replacement of rotifers by this dried formula in order to completely eliminate live prey in larval culture of Red drum. Analyse technico-économique de projets d'élevage d'ombrine (Sciaenops ocellata) en cages flottantes à la Martinique Auteur(s) : Houel, S Falguiere, Jean-claude Paquotte, Philippe Résumé : The availability in interesting sites and the zootechnical performances of tropical fish are two impo rt ant assets in favor of the development of fish farming in the Caribbean islands. This repor presents a technical and financial analysis of red drum farming projects in floating cages in Martinique(French West Indies). This project analysis makes it possible to compare the economic feasability of a small-scale production system with that of a semi-industrial one submitted to different technical constraints. The main criteria of the project analysis are the profitability of the funded capital, the financial feasability during the buildup period, the profitability at a steady state and the cost price. Production costs are hi gher in the the small-scale enterprises than in the semi-industrial ones, thanks to better capita] productivity and better labour productivity. An analysis of sensitivity to the variations ofbiological and economical parameters is also contained in the report. The results of these studies indicate that Caribbean fish farming could be profitable, due to the rapid buildup of the facilities and to the short production cycles. Nevertheless, attention should be paid to the risk of storms and hurricanes in this part of the world. Moreover, the analysis of sensitivity highlights the great influence of seed price. Sound production in Sciaenops ocellatus: Preliminary study for the development of acoustic cues in aquaculture Auteur(s) : Parmentier, Eric Tock, Jeremy Falguiere, Jean-claude Beauchaud, Marilyn Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The red drum Sciaenops ocellatus is an estuarine-dependent sciaenid that has supported important recreational and commercial fisheries for many years. Since the 1980s, this species has been farmed in different regions of the world and studies have been conducted to find natural ways to improve its culture. Sciaenops ocellatus is well known for making calls but studies on this characteristic have been mainly restricted to passive acoustics. The aim of this study was to provide acoustic-related information that could be useful in rearing practices. We have studied in detail fish calling characteristics, described their sound-producing mechanism and tested the recordings in different kinds of confinements (floating cages, concrete and fibreglass tanks). Contrary to previous studies, calls were recorded mainly in the morning, between 06:00 and 09:00. Sounds are made only by males; females do not have sound-producing apparatus. The anatomy, muscle ultrastructure data and calling characteristics show conclusively that calls result from the contraction of high speed muscles which are characterized by the very small diameter (7 μm) of the muscle cells. Preliminary results suggest sound characteristics can give information on the fish physiology but further studies are needed. The effects of resonance of fibreglass tanks are experimentally highlighted, showing unequivocally that all the characteristics of fish calls are completely distorted, even in big tanks (13 m3). These findings should be taken into account when using pre-recorded sounds in the rearing of this species because it can affect communication during courtship activity. Induced spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus: use of multivariate and univariate analysis methods in the search for side effects of LH-RHa treatments and ovarian development state upon spawn quality Auteur(s) : Gardes, Lionel Villanove, Philippe Buchet, Vincent Fauvel, Christian Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : The present work examines the usefulness of the combination of multivariate analyses and further one-way analysis of variance in the search for links between causes and effects in heterologous stimulation of spawning in fish. Stimulations with both 20 and 50 mu g . kg(-1) doses of [D Trp(6)] luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LH-RHa) were effective in inducing and synchronizing spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus. Oocyte development monitoring using ovarian biopsy allowed treatment injections at different stages of maturation. The influence at stimulation time of female oocyte development state upon further development was shown. An interesting potential of second stimulation, leading to high quality spawns, was established and factors of success were identified. The best conditions for stimulation success were simultaneously late stage of oocyte development characterized by the beginning of oil droplet coalescence, high ovarian homogeneity quoted by the proportion of most developed oocytes in the biopsy sample, and low dose of hormone (20 mu g . kg(-1)) for both first and second stimulations. Premiers essais d'élevage larvaire de l'ombrine subtropicale (red fish) Sciaenops ocellatus dans les conditions intensives en Martinique Auteur(s) : Soletchnik, Patrick Thouard, Emmanuel Goyard, Emmanuel Baisnee, D Baisnee, D Baisnee, D Yvon, C Baker, P Résumé : Two batches of red drum larvae were air shipped from hatcheries in the U.S.A. and stocked in two intensive tank experiments at densities oc 7 :.nd 2-3 larvae per liter. Food items include live rotifers, copepods, brine shrimps. squid and commercial fish pellets. Growth rates were similar in both experiments up to day 20 (12-1" mm) but differences in feeding schedules and an infestation by the dinoflagelate Amyloodinium sp. affected the growth from day 20 to 43 in the second trial. Significant mortalities occurred in the tanks during the first feeding period (days 2 to 7) and again from days 17 to 20 as the result of cannibalism. Survival between day 2 and day 44 was 44% in the first trial. Abnormal inflation of the swim bladder and infection with Amyloodinium sp. reduced the survival to 6-19% in the second. Qualité et valorisation de l'ombrine ocellée : l'exemple de la filière pisciculture marine martiniquaise Auteur(s) : Leon, Xavier Knockaert, Camille Regina, Françoise Résumé : The development of marine fish culture in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion and Mayotte islands is relatively new and relies on the culture of the Red Drum (official name since 2007; scientific name: Sciaenops ocellatus). The current production is of about 70 tonnes per year in Reunion (only one company), 200 tonnes in Mayotte (a cooperative deriving from an entrepreneur's cooperative and an industrial company: Mayotte Aquaculture) and 100 tonnes in Martinique (around twelve artisanal companies). A company has also been running in Guadeloupe since 2004. Reunion's production is sold on the local market. In Mayotte, the entire Red Drum production of Mayotte-Aquaculture is exported to Europe. In the French Caribbean, the production is currently sold locally, with a strong development potential, the fish importations being larger than the fishing production (more than 60 % of the sea products sold locally is imported). Sea food consumption in the Caribbean is traditionally very large. The local market in Martinique is thought to be of about 18,000 tonnes, which corresponds to an average consumption of 48 kg/year per inhabitant (average consumption in France: 35 kg/inhab/year)...
