The principle of antiphony, more commonly known as "call-response" is often mentioned in the contextual configuration of an artistic expression, whether literary, as in Toni Morrison’s novels for example, or in music, in most cases. It represents the process that will frame and format the modalities of communication between members of an audience and a performer, a creator. This article proposes a broader and cross-reading approach of this typical habitus among black communities in the Americas, especially in contemporary contexts of the Civil Rights Movements and of the aesthetic renewal of Jazz, after the Swing era. The global recession at the end of the 2000s did not spare the Caribbean countries. If the economic events of this crisis are the same, the study conducted in urban areas of Pointe-à-Pitre, and Roseau shows that the perception and the responses of people facing this event vary from one jurisdiction to another, depending on the political status and living standards. In the French Antilles, the reaction was to seek a responsible, namely the state, while the independent island of Dominica, in a pragmatic way, people collectively seek alternatives. ![]() | Back analysis of the institutional and social responses to the eruption and the lahars of Mount Pinatubo Volcano from 1991 to 1998 (Central Luzon, Philippines) Auteur(s) : Leone, Frédéric Gaillard, Jean-Christophe Auteurs secondaires : Département de Géographie ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Département de géographie ; Université de Savoie Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Springer Verlag (Germany) Résumé : International audience Mount Pinatubo volcano erupted in June 1991 in the main island of Luzon belonging to the Philippines archipelago. Huge economic losses and population exodus have followed. This major crisis has been relayed with other crises due to rainfed lahars which have been supplied with eruption deposits. These lahars have occurred every year since 1991 during the rainy season. They will probably last until 2005. After a brief presentation of the Philippine official response system to disasters, this paper draws up a critical analysis of the different kinds of institutional and social responses deployed to manage the different crisis and post-crisis phases of this event. Based on three viewpoints: from population, media and other actors, this analysis attempts to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the official management system, especially by studying the efficiency and the range of the solutions taken. So, it appears that the management of the June 1991 main crisis (eruption) was a success. On the other hand, difficulties have occurred with lahars risk management. Indeed, these lahars have obliged the authorities to protect and relocate thousands of people. In spite of persistent problems, the management system (monitoring/warning/evacuation) of lahar crises improves year after year. Failures appear especially within the rehabilitation program (protection/rehousing). Many direct (lack of means, preparedness, coordination, dialog, etc.) and indirect (politico-administrative, socio-economic, cultural contexts) factors come together to lock the wheels of the institutional response system. They defer the socio-economic start of this vital northern Philippines area. In the context of a tourism crisis in the north, a globalized economy and an increase of mobility, a change in the forms of tourism development seems to occur in peripheral areas. In some tourism areas and due to conflicts over the use of natural resources, alternative recreational practices arise that combine economic needs and socio-environmental concerns. Our article analyzes the appearance of scientific tourism in the "non-tourist" region of Aysén, in Chilean Patagonia. Actors of a territory unite according to specific cultural poles and thematic axes through experiential research and innovative scientific mediation pilot projects. On this pioneer front, an informal network of stakeholders coordinates its actions to address the social and environmental issues of their territory. Operators and service providers for scientific tourism create an innovative offer in a participatory process. An alternative tourism system, focused on protecting the environment, the culture and social dynamics of the host community, promotes the acquisition and sharing of knowledge between scientists, local actors and visitors. Is scientific tourism part of a global evolution of tourism practices? By proposing to go beyond established boundaries, of recreational activities and work, everyday places and leisure areas, it appears as the expression of an “After-Tourism”. The hybridization of practices, a scientific approach associated with the spirit of the discovery inherent of the travel experience, seems to respond to the challenges of the community confronted to the rise of a globalized tourism. While tourism has always been thought of in terms of transfer of skills, models and engineering from the North to the South, a periphery offers new frameworks of thought, action and participation that renew the meaning of travel. ![]() | Rastafari: Alternative Religion and Resistance against “White” Christianity Auteur(s) : Kroubo Dagnini, Jérémie Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Since the early sixteenth century, the history of Jamaica has been associated successively with slavery, Christian Evangelization, colonialism and neocolonialism, which gave rise to numerous revolutions, riots and various other forms of social unrest. Black Jamaicans have always lived in a constant state of resistance, a mentality that gave birth, in the early thirties, to a Jamaican religion called Rastafari. Besides studying the roots and symbolism of Rastafari, my paper is aimed at defining the Rasta movement as a religion born as a legitimate response to oppression and Christian Evangelization. In other words, my work examines Rastafari as a Pan-African and Afrocentric version of “White” Christianity. The nautical activiity has great potential for the socio-economic development of tourism. In Spain, the sector is a priority concern, especially for the Canary Islands, which show a clear commitment to specialise and reposition the destination as a top quality nautical destination on a European level. These aspects, together with the prior experience and tradition these islands have as a stopover destination for vessels in the Atlantic, when crossing Europe towards the Caribbean, represent strengths that have not yet been taken advantage of in the archipelago’s attempt to move away from its image as a traditional sun and beach destination. The Governmental Authorities in the Canary Islands have clear strategies in place to promote the yachting tourism growth. However, renewing the sector is believed to be a difficult process because of the large number of factors that interact within the same. This is a phenomenon of sufficient social and environmental significance to justify academic attention. This research analyses therefore the determinants of the European yachtsmen´s satisfaction with the ports of call of the Canary Islands. Data results of questioning 185 European yachtsmen crossing the Atlantic during 2014 and 2015 reveal that, among other aspects, proper environmental management of marinas leads to an increasing yachtsmen´s satisfaction. The findings provide the opportunity for developing recommendations for tourism managers and practitioners, in the attempt to contribute to a more sustainable and reasoned development and growth in the sector. Based on the current preferences of the European market of yachtsmen, it is possible to assure that environmental and social responsibility policies are a key differentiation factor for the competitiveness of the sector. ![]() | Les cultures marines en France et le droit Résumé : The current legal regime governing marine farms reflects what French shellfish culture used to be: an artisanal, traditional and family activity. Even if this profession is of social importance, it has never really been taken into account in coastal management decisions. This is the reason why, if aquaculture must expand, the whole related legal regime has to be adapted to the new needs of a profession which is still trying to find itself. New links will develop with the responsible authorities. Conflicts of a new type will rise between the different coastal and marine space users. A rethinking of the standard public property regulations seems necessary. ![]() | Entrepreneurship in Haiti: Toward an Identification of The ‘Blind Spots’ Auteur(s) : Gowreesunkar, Vanessa Séraphin, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : In countries that have experienced abusive power relationships, ongoing poverty, prejudice, violence and natural disaster, changes hardly happen and if they do, they are very slow. Haiti is not an exception. The problem of entrepreneurship in Haiti goes beyond human management and business management skills. It is first of all a human issue: The primary needs of the locals need to be met; a sense of community needs to be developed and the locals need to be able to dream; and finally, the right context needs to be put in place and the ‘yes, we can spirit’ encouraged. It is the improvement of the well-being of Haitians that is going to lead to the development of a strong entreprrenurial system. It is a one way relationship. In poor countries like Haiti it is important to address the human condition first. Unlocking change through: transformational leadership; enterprise reform; technology innovation; corporate transparency; stakeholders engagement; social responsibility; integrated value and finally, through future-fitness could be a potential option for Haiti.
