The town of Bath is located in the John Crow Mountains in Saint Thomas, Jamaica. Mineral springs flow from the rocks and are piped into the bath house, pictured, where the cold and hot waters of the springs are mixed together. The water’s high mineral (sulfur and lime) content is believed to have medicinal properties. The bath has been officially known as the Bath of the Saint Thomas the Apostle. Bath Fountain Hotel and Spa is run by the Jamaican Ministry of Tourism. In front of the building are many automobiles including a taxi. Along the stream, pictured, are dasheens (taros), ferns, palms, and other trees. Slide labeled Jam. St. Thomas min bath at Bath (SE).

Résumé : Architectural analyses of temperate tree species using a chronological approach suggest that the expression of epicormic branches is closely related to low growth rates in the axes that make up the branching system. Therefore, sole consideration of epicormic criteria may be sufficient to identify trees with low secondary growth levels or with both low primary and secondary growth levels. In a tropical tree such as Dicorynia guianensis (basralocus), where chronological studies are difficult, this relationship could be very useful as an easily accessible indicator of growth potentials. A simple method of architectural tree description was used to characterize the global structure of more than 1650 basralocus trees and to evaluate their growth level. Measurements of simple growth characters [height, basal diameter, internode length of submittal part (top of the main axis of the tree)] and the observation of four structural binary descriptors on the main stem (presence of sequential branches and young epicormic branches, state of the submittal part, global orientation), indicated that epicormic branch formation is clearly related to a decrease in length of the successive growth units of the main stem. Analysis of height vs. diameter ratios among different tree subgroups, with and without epicormic branching, suggested that trees with epicormic branches generally have a low level of secondary growth compared with primary growth.

Walter W. S. Cook (wearing shorts) walks with another companion on North Cat Cay, Bimini, Bahamas. Cook, who was the founding director of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, served as an art professor from 1932 to 1953, and was historian of Medieval Spanish art. North Cat Cay was purchased in 1931 by Louis Wasey as a private island and is presently (2013) owned by members of the Cat Cay Yacht Club. The walking path is lined with palm trees. In the distance is a view of the ocean and a tall, narrow stone building with windows, an arched doorway, and a pyramid shaped roof. Slide labeled Cat Cay, Mar '46.

Background and Aims Plastic tree-shelters are increasingly used to protect tree seedlings against browsing animals and herbicide drifts. The biomass allocation in young seedlings of deciduous trees is highly disturbed by common plastic tree-shelters, resulting in poor root systems and reduced diameter growth of the trunk. The shelters have been improved by creating chimney-effect ventilation with holes drilled at the bottom, resulting in stimulated trunk diameter growth, but the root deficit has remained unchanged. An experiment was set up to elucidate the mechanisms behind the poor root growth of sheltered Prunus avium trees. Methods Tree seedlings were grown either in natural windy conditions or in tree-shelters. Mechanical wind stimuli were suppressed in ten unsheltered trees by staking. Mechanical stimuli (bending) of the stem were applied in ten sheltered trees using an original mechanical device. Key Results Sheltered trees suffered from poor root growth, but sheltered bent trees largely recovered, showing that mechano-sensing is an important mechanism governing C allocation and the shoot-root balance. The use of a few artificial mechanical stimuli increased the biomass allocation towards the roots, as did natural wind sway. It was demonstrated that there was an acclimation of plants to the imposed strain. Conclusions This study suggests that if mechanical stimuli are used to control plant growth, they should be applied at low frequency in order to be most effective. The impact on the functional equilibrium hypothesis that is used in many tree growth models is discussed. The consequence of the lack of mechanical stimuli should be incorporated in tree growth models when applied to environments protected from the wind (e.g. greenhouses, dense forests).

Two men walk down the road lined with almond trees in Ocho Rios, Saint Ann, Jamaica. In the distance can be seen a bauxite plant. Bauxite is the principal raw material used in the production of alumina. Bauxite mining began in Jamaica in 1942, when the “red ferruginous earth” of Saint Ann was found to contain high amounts of alumina for mining. In 1944, Reynolds Metals Company and its subsidiary Reynolds Jamaica Mines began mining explorations in Saint Ann. On June 5, 1952, the first shipment of bauxite ore left Jamaica from Reynolds Jamaica Mines in Ocho Rios. Slide labeled Bauxite Plant Ocho Rios.

Résumé : P>The distribution of the archaeal communities in deep subseafloor sediments [0-36 m below the seafloor (mbsf)] from the New Caledonia and Fairway Basins was investigated using DNA- and RNA-derived 16S rRNA clone libraries, functional genes and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). A new method, Co-Migration DGGE (CM-DGGE), was developed to access selectively the active archaeal diversity. Prokaryotic cell abundances at the open-ocean sites were on average similar to 3.5 times lower than at a site under terrestrial influence. The sediment surface archaeal community (0-1.5 mbsf) was characterized by active Marine Group 1 (MG-1) Archaea that co-occurred with ammonia monooxygenase gene (amoA) sequences affiliated to a group of uncultured sedimentary Crenarchaeota. However, the anoxic subsurface methane-poor sediments (below 1.5 mbsf) were dominated by less active archaeal communities, such as the Thermoplasmatales, Marine Benthic Group D and other lineages probably involved in the methane cycle (Methanosarcinales, ANME-2 and DSAG/MBG-B). Moreover, the archaeal diversity of some sediment layers was restricted to only one lineage (Uncultured Euryarchaeota, DHVE6, MBG-B, MG-1 and SAGMEG). Sequences forming two clusters within the Thermococcales order were also present in these cold subseafloor sediments, suggesting that these uncultured putative thermophilic archaeal communities might have originated from a different environment. This study shows a transition between surface and subsurface sediment archaeal communities.

Basralocus (Dicorynia guianensis Amshoff, Caesalpiniaceae), first timber exploited species in French Guyana, shows a spatial aggregative distribution. In order to characterize Basralocus clump organisation, many approaches were used : the study of different forest variables (total height, diameter at breast height, .... j, a spatial analysis studied by population splitting in 3 classes according to their diameters at breast height and an architectural analysis. To evaluate the pertinence of different approach, 2 clump structures, located on control and logged plots,are compared. The trees of the logged clump have a smaller height and diameter. a slender habit, a taller crown and a better growth than the control. These 2 clumps stand out by a different number of mature trees and different types of spatial distribution of juvenile trees around them are possible. The opening of the environment by forestry provokes a Jump rejuvenation by the presence of numerous unbranched young trees. The architectural analysis helps to detect a large expression variability in growth strategies which can be reflected by different architectural vigours. The combination between forest variables, spatial and architectural analysis results could suggest a dynamic evolution of these 2 clumps.
L'Angélique (Dicorynia guianensis Amshoff, Caesalpiniaceae), première espèce exploitée Pour le bois d'oeuvre en Guyane française, a une répartition spatiale de type agrégatif. Afin de caractériser la structure d’un agrégat d'Angélique, plusieurs approches sont utilisées: une étude des différents paramètres dendrométriques (hauteur totale, diamètre à 1.30 m....j. une analyse spatiale réalisée en découpant la population des individus en 3 classes de diamètre bien distinctes et une analyse architecturale. Afin de valider la pertinence de ces approches, 2 agrégats, l'un en parcelle témoin et l'autre en parcelle exploitée pour le bois d'oeuvre, sont comparés. Ainsi, les arbres de l'agrégat exploité ont une hauteur et un diamètre plus petit, un port plus élancé, un houppier plus grand et une meilleure croissance. Ces 2 agrégats se distinguent par un nombre variable de semenciers et différents types de répartition spatiale des juvéniles autour de ceux-ci sont possibles. L'ouverture du milieu par l'exploitation forestière provoque un rajeunissement de l'agrégat souligné par la présence de nombreux individus jeunes non ramifiés. L'analyse architecturale permet de déceler une grande variabilité d'expression dans le développement qui se traduit par différentes vigueurs architecturales. En combinant les résultats des analyses dendrométrique, spatiale et architecturale, une évolution dynamique de la structure de ces 2 agrégats est proposée.

The seedlings bordering the square and barely visible here have grown into large, shady trees.
