Résumé : En mettant côte à côte les modèles de construction des habitations sucrières caribéennes et des cités ouvrières métropolitaines, on constate de troublantes similitudes entre ces deux systèmes sociospatiaux. Chacun des modèles correspond à un stade différencié de l’expansion du capitalisme industriel : l’hypothèse défendue ici consiste à montrer que le discours hygiéniste serait venu occulter le recouvrement de ces deux modèles de logement patronaux, parce que le premier était largement entaché par la « question esclavagiste » dont l’industrialisme métropolitain, incarné dans le second, souhaitait se débarrasser. Et l’occultation de cette part d’héritage dans la mémoire du modèle des cités ouvrières pourrait s’expliquer par la cécité dont a longtemps été saisie la société française quant à son passé esclavagiste puis colonial. Ce lien entre les deux modèles sociospatiaux ne semble d’ailleurs faire l’objet d’aucune construction patrimoniale, dans le monde industrialisé comme dans la Caraïbe, alors même que chaque modèle pris isolément tendrait à se patrimonialiser.
When the building models of living quarters on Caribbean sugar plantations are compared to workers’ housing estates in Metropolitan France, we find unsettling similarities between the two socio-spatial systems. The models each correspond to a different stage in the spread of industrial capitalism: the hypothesis advanced here argues that “hygienist” discourse could have worked to obscure the overlap between these two models of company-owned housing since the former was sullied by the “slavery issue” from which Metropolitan industrialism, embodied by the latter, wanted to distance itself. The omission of this aspect of its heritage from the memory of the workers’ housing estate model may be explained by French society’s long-standing refusal to acknowledge its slavery-based and then colonial past. The connection between these two socio-spatial models does not appear to be of interest in the heritage-making process in either the industrialised world or the Caribbean despite the fact that each model on its own is beginning to be recognised as part of the local heritage.

Background : Trichoderma reesei is the main industrial source of cellulases and hemicellulases required for the hydrolysis of biomass to simple sugars, which can then be used in the production of biofuels and biorefineries. The highly productive strains in use today were generated by classical mutagenesis. As byproducts of this procedure, mutants were generated that turned out to be unable to produce cellulases. In order to identify the mutations responsible for this inability, we sequenced the genome of one of these strains, QM9136, and compared it to that of its progenitor T. reesei QM6a.Results : In QM9136, we detected a surprisingly low number of mutagenic events in the promoter and coding regions of genes, i.e. only eight indels and six single nucleotide variants. One of these indels led to a frame-shift in the Zn2Cys6 transcription factor XYR1, the general regulator of cellulase and xylanase expression, and resulted in its C-terminal truncation by 140 amino acids. Retransformation of strain QM9136 with the wild-type xyr1 allele fully recovered the ability to produce cellulases, and is thus the reason for the cellulase-negative phenotype. Introduction of an engineered xyr1 allele containing the truncating point mutation into the moderate producer T. reesei QM9414 rendered this strain also cellulase-negative. The correspondingly truncated XYR1 protein was still able to enter the nucleus, but failed to be expressed over the basal constitutive level.Conclusion : The missing 140 C-terminal amino acids of XYR1 are therefore responsible for its previously observed auto-regulation which is essential for cellulases to be expressed. Our data present a working example of the use of genome sequencing leading to a functional explanation of the QM9136 cellulase-negative phenotype.

Le monde du café à la Martinique du début du XVIIIe siècle aux années 1860 ; The world of coffee from the beginning of the eighteenth century through the 1860s

Résumé : L’historiographie antillaise n’a donné jusqu’ici qu’une vision tronquée de la société martiniquaise. L’appréhension de l’ère coloniale s’est très tôt autocentrée sur l’économie plantationnaire sucrière à moteur externe, mais cette dernière n’a guère occupée plus de la moitié de la population de l’île au XVIIIe et dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Pour une grande majorité, la masse laborieuse libre ou esclave se répartit entre les villes et les exploitations de type « secondaire ». A mesure de l’appréhension de l’univers caféier, un monde à part se profile dessinant une nouvelle catégorie sociale divergente de l’élite sucrière qui apparaissait jusqu’ici comme le modèle représentatif de la population blanche propriétaire terrienne. Une catégorie intermédiaire est mise en place mettant en relief un groupe caféier économiquement faible au mode de vie difficile, présentant des comportements matrimoniaux endogames aussi bien spatialement que socialement. Cette analyse révèle un corps social pluriel dans lequel les femmes, les libres de couleur, et avec l’abolition de l’esclavage les nouveaux libres tiennent une place de choix. Ce travail a l’avantage de combler un important vide historiographique en matière d’histoire sociale de la Martinique, ainsi que de renouveler le concept de société d’habitation à travers la mise en perspective d’une catégorie sociale jusque-là restée inaperçue.
The historiography of the Antilles to date has yielded only a limited vision of society in Martinique. The scientific works of the Colonial Era were egocentrically focused on the economy of sugar plantations, but this only covered a little over half of the population of the island in the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century. The other half of the working population, whether they were free or slaves, was divided between cities and secondary enterprises. As the coffee industry took root, a separate world emerged, diverging from the elite sugar plantation owners that represented the land-owning white population. This parallel society of economically disadvantaged small farmers and coffee growers, living a hard-working, difficult lifestyle, exhibited endogamous marriage behavior. This analysis highlights a multi-faceted social body in which women, free people of color, and, with the abolition of slavery, the new free hold a special role. On the other side of the barrier, the slaves also have a unique profile, they operate in small plantations on which opportunities for advancement are greater than in the large sugarcane plantations. This work fills an important gap in the social history of Martinique, as it reexamines the perception of the elite sugar plantation society via the perspective of a social class hitherto unnoticed.
