Oracabessa is a small town in Saint Mary, Jamaica. Its harbor was once an important banana port. This harbor town derives its name from the Spanish settlers who established a supply post there called Oracabessa, or "Golden Head." Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica was originally a banana port, where rivers like the Rio Grande were used to transport bananas from the island’s interior to cargo ships. The town of Black River, the capital of Saint Elizabeth, is one of Jamaica’s oldest towns and is named for one of the country’s longest rivers. It is reported that the town was the first to receive electricity and to have imported the first motorcar. In the foreground of a image is a sign that reads "Ministry of Communications and Works, Post Office, Black River." There is a billboard advertisement for Consulate menthol cigarettes with the slogan "Consulate comes cooler." In the distance are two buses and a Volkswagen van. Slide labeled Jam. Black River.

This image shows workers near a banana loading area, while donkey pulled carts wait. Once the bananas are unloaded from the carts they will be placed on awaiting boats in the bay of Oracabessa, Saint Mary, Jamaica. One of Oracabessa’s famous residents was Ian Fleming. Fleming built his house GoldenEye, nearby, where he wrote many of his James Bond books. Slide labeled Aracabessa Banana Sheds.
