Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location.
Museum exhibit of what appears to be a kitchen scenery in the People’s Museum of Craft and Technology, Spanish Town, Saint Catherine, Jamaica. The exhibit includes a wax female figure, a fire place with an iron cooking pot, and wooden bowls. The sign in the exhibit reads “Meat Smokers – without refrigeration, the preservation of fish and meat was usually by smoking. The creng-creng was an open basket type of smoker, fish and meat were also hung on hooks.” Slide labeled Jam. Museum of Spanish Town.

Studies report that foetal exposure to paracetamol by maternal consumption can interfere with male reproductive development. Moreover, recent biomonitoring data report widespread presence of paracetamol in German and Danish populations, suggesting exposure via secondary (non-pharmaceutical) sources such as metabolic conversion from the ubiquitous industrial compound aniline. In this study we investigated the extent to which paracetamol and aniline can interfere with female reproductive development. Intrauterine exposure to paracetamol by gavage of pregnant dams resulted in shortening of the anogenital distance in adult offspring, suggesting that foetal hormone signalling had been disturbed. Female offspring of paracetamol-exposed mothers had ovaries with diminished follicle reserve and reduced fertility. Foetal gonads of exposed animals had also reduced gonocyte numbers, suggesting that the reduced follicle count in adults could be due to early disruption of germ cell development. However, ex vivo cultures of ovaries from 12.5 days post coitum foetuses showed no decrease in proliferation or expression following exposure to paracetamol. This suggests that the effect of paracetamol occurs prior to this developmental stage. Accordingly, using embryonic stem cells as a proxy for primordial germ cells we show that paracetamol is an inhibitor of cellular proliferation, but without cytotoxic effects. Collectively, our data show that intrauterine exposure to paracetamol at levels commonly observed in pregnant women, as well as its precursor aniline, may block primordial germ cell proliferation, ultimately leading to reduced follicle reserves and compromised reproductive capacity later in life

Résumé : (Biographical) The Orange Bowl ceremony was held to honor the surviving members of the Miami base Cuban-exile force, or Brigade 2506 who carried out an unsuccessful invasion of Cuba in April 1961. The group landed at the Bay of Pigs on Cuba's south coast, but was quickly routed by Cuban forces.

Résumé : Coastal Quaternary deposits of western Oranie show typical soft-sediment deformations including sedimentary dykes, sand volcanoes, sismoslumps, thixotropic bowls, thixotropic wedges, diapir-like structures, and faults grading. Field observations indicate that these deformations exist at several levels of the studied deposits along the west Oranian coast. This study demonstrated that these structures are earthquakes-related, by analysis of potential trigger sources. Several arguments demonstrate the seismic origin: the depositional environment rich in water that located in an active tectonic region, the thixotropic nature of deformations and their large vertical and horizontal diffusion in the Quaternary series consistent with a seismic recurrence. This allows characterizing these Quaternary soft-sediment deformations as seismites that were triggered by earthquakes.
