Cat Cay refers to two islands in the Bahamas, North Cat Cay and South Cat Cay which is uninhabited. North Cat Cay was purchased in 1931 by Louis Wasey as a private island and is presently (2013) owned by members of the Cat Cay Yacht Club. This image shows yachts and sail boats docked at the North Cat Cay marina. One of the yachts is flying a United States of America flag while another is called “Elsa B.” Two men, one dressed in a khaki uniform, stand on the dock. Three men can be seen in the boat closest to the camera. Slide labeled Cat Cay, Mar '46.

In the foreground are men in sailboats. In the background is the S.S. Yarmouth Castle. In 1927, the S.S. Evangeline, and her sister ship the S.S. Yarmouth, were built by Eastern Steamship Lines in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1964, the S.S. Evangeline was sold to the Chadade Steamship Company, Inc., a Panamanian company, where her name was changed from Evangeline to Yarmouth Castle. On November 13, 1965, the Yarmouth Castle, sailing from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas, sank due to fire. The CYL on the funnel stands for Yarmouth Cruise Lines. The Abacos in the Bahamas are known for their tradition of building boats by hand with Man of War Cay being known as Abacos’ boat-building center. The Abacos’ crest also features a sail boat. This image features palm thatch roofed pavilions. Under one of the pavilions, three men view a boat under construction. The ground is covered with wood shavings and piles of wood. During February of 1957, this group of people travelled on the boat “Isabella” to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos, including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. Two boats one with the name “Isabella, New York” and another named “Joy G.” are anchored near a dock in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. "Isabella" belongs to John Richard Yeend, also known as Captain Jack R. Yeend. During February of 1957, “Isabella” travelled to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. On the dock are stacks of concrete blocks. A young woman wearing a blue dress and a hair scarf walks by people sitting on the edge of the dock. Two men are in a row boat near the dock. The Abacos are a group of islands and cays in the Bahamas that form a 120-mile-long chain stretching over 650 square miles. Great Abaco is the second largest island in The Bahamas with one third of the country’s population. Many of smaller islands and cays in the area were settled by British Loyalist after the American Revolutionary War. The Abacos are known for their tradition of building boats by hand with Man of War Cay being known as Abacos’ boat-building center. The Abacos’ crest also features a sail boat. This image features boats anchored in the harbor of Man of War Cay. This image was also featured in William Junior Bryant’s book “Flames of Life: A Pictorial Philosophy,” first published in 1961. Sail boat in Nassau Harbor flying the British merchant ship flag, the United States of America flag, and the Russian merchant ship flag. The red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner is the official, historic seventeenth century Red Ensign flag of the British Merchant Navy. The white-blue-red flag was first adopted in 1699 by Tsar Peter I the Great as an ensign for Russian merchant ships and was later chosen as the official Russian flag in 1991, prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In the distance is the Hog Island Light (now Paradise Island). Hog Island Light, built 1817, is the oldest lighthouse in The Bahamas and is also the oldest surviving lighthouse in the West Indies. In 1962, the government changed the name of Hog Island to Paradise Island. Slide labeled Harbor entrance light Nassau.
