The straw market, one of the oldest industries in the Bahamas, was developed after the sponge industry began to decline in the 1940s. Pictured is a vendor, primarily women, standing by a stall featuring straw bags, belts, and hats made from woven leaves. Eleanor Friend Sleight and her daughter Susan are buying a souvenir belt.
