Many of smaller islands and cays in the area were settled by British Loyalist after the American Revolutionary War. Marsh Harbour is a town on Great Abaco located closest to Man of War Cay. Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. The steamboat pictured went into service in 1909, the year of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration which celebrated Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Hudson River and Robert Fulton’s paddle steamer. Steamboat Robert Fulton belonged to the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948 traveling along the Hudson River from Albany to New York City. In 1959, the steamboat was brought on land to Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. The following marine turtles have been recorded in the Bahamas: Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, and Kemp’s Ridley Turtle. The Green Turtle is listed (2013) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened species as endangered. All marine turtles are now fully protected under Bahamian law, including the Green Turtle. Green Turtle meat and cartilage were used to make turtle soup which was once a delicacy in the Bahamian Out Islands.
