Résumé : Large rivers are key hydrologic components in oceanography, particularly regarding air-sea and land-sea exchanges and biogeochemistry. We enter now in a new era of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observing system from Space with the recent launches of the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the NASA Aquarius/Sac-D missions. With these new sensors, we are now in an excellent position to revisit SSS and ocean color investigations in the tropical northwest Atlantic using multi-year remote sensing time series and concurrent in situ observations. The Amazon is the world's largest river in terms of discharge. In its plume, SSS and upper water column optical properties such as the absorption coefficient of colored detrital matter (acdm) are strongly negatively correlated (<-0.7). Local quasi-linear relationships between SSS and acdm are derived for these plume waters over the period of 2010-2013 using new spaceborne SSS and ocean color measurements. Results allow unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of this coupling. These relationships are then used to estimate SSS in the Amazon plume based on ocean color satellite data. This new product is validated against SMOS and in situ data and compared with previously developed SSS retrieval models. We demonstrate the potential to estimate tropical Atlantic SSS for the extended period from 1998 to 2010, prior to spaceborne SSS data collection.

Résumé : In Martinique in the eighteenth century, the "free people of color", both those free by birth and freedmen, black or mixed race, form a legal category, which was distinct from those of whites and slaves. Comparative studies with Spanish or English territories show that no legal regulation formalized a shift - from the category of free colored people to that of White - in the French colonies between the late seventeenth century and the French Revolution. Also, this thesis proposes to show the informal process that enabled some people - the "assimilated" - to cross the color barrier. I analysed the color prejudice, a racist system, whose ideology, supported by local regulations, legitimized the collective construction of a public and social order. In a second step, I examined the development of the color bar. The free colored people were the first to bear the brunt of the impermeability of the demarcation line and of the problems posed by the purity of blood; but some whites, through interracial unions, and Native Americans have also been targeted. Finally I thought about what made the whiteness, and the strategies to achieve whiteness, change in status. Notarial acts and 33,000 acts of parish registers treaties led to the reconstitution of genealogies, in order to examine individuals and families over generations; I observed the importance of the phenotype, whitening, legitimacy relations, privileged partners, choice of networks, wealth levels and the use of space.
À la Martinique au XVIIIe siècle, les « libres de couleur », qu’ils soient nés libres ou affranchis, noirs ou métis, forment une catégorie juridique distincte des Blancs et des esclaves. L’étude comparée, avec les territoires espagnols ou anglais, montre qu’aucune réglementation légale n’a officialisé un passage de la catégorie Libre de couleur à celle de Blanc dans les colonies françaises de la fin du XVIIe siècle à la Révolution française. Description : Limited work has focused on the nutritionally beneficial purple-fleshed sweetpotato in the Caribbean. Purple-fleshed sweetpotatoes are an excellent source of bioflavonoids and antioxidants. Cultivars of purple-fleshed sweetpotato are common in Asia but seldom grown in the west. These Asian cultivars set tuberous roots along the stem length where they root. The objective of this work was to introgress the purple-fleshed characteristic into highly productive early bearing (90-105 days) lines. The purple-fleshed line 'VIP' was used in reciprocal crosses with ?Bonita?, ?Liberty?, ?Mojave? and ?Ruddy?. From hand pollination of these hexaploid plants, 179 seedlings were obtained with a skin color ranging from white to deep burgundy. After the first field trial, 60 were selected for further evaluation based on early tuberous root shape and set, weevil tolerance and soluble sugar content. Continued evaluation will reduce selection down to 20 which further scrutiny to narrow selection to the top five. Le travail limité s'est concentré sur le sweetpotato pourpre-étoffé nutritionnellement salutaire dans les Caraïbe. Les sweetpotatoes Pourpre-étoffés sont une excellente source des bioflavonoïdes et des antioxydants. Les cultivateurs du sweetpotato pourpre-étoffé sont communs en Asie mais sont rarement développés dans l'ouest. Ces cultivateurs asiatiques placent les racines tubéreuses sur la longueur de tige où ils s'enracinent. L'objectif de ce travail était aux introgress que la caractéristique pourpre-étoffée dans la première incidence fortement productive (90-105 jours). La ligne pourpre-étoffée 'VIP' a été employée dans les croix réciproques avec « Bonita », « liberté », « Mojave » et « vermeil ». De la pollinisation de main de ces usines hexaploïdes, 179 jeunes plantes ont été obtenues avec une couleur de la peau s'étendant de blanc à Bourgogne profond. Après le premier essai pratique, 60 ont été sélectionnés pour davantage d'évaluation basée sur la forme tôt et l'ensemble de racine tubéreuse, la tolérance de charançon et le contenu soluble de sucre. L'évaluation continue ramènera la sélection pour avaler à 20 qui promeuvent l'examen minutieux pour rétrécir la sélection aux cinq principaux.

Résumé : The temporal evolution and spatial distribution of surface salinity and colored detrital matter (cdm) were evaluated within and adjacent to the Amazon River Plume. Study objectives were as follows: first, to document the spatial coherence between Amazon discharge, salinity, cdm, and the nature of the salinity-cdm relationship; second, to document the temporal and spatial variability of cdm along the trajectory of the low-salinity Amazon Plume, and third, to explore the departure of cdm from conservative mixing behavior along the plume trajectory into the open ocean. Time series (2003-2007) of surface salinity estimated using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System and corresponding satellite cdm absorption (acdm) data documented a plume of freshened, colored water emanating from the Amazon. Salinity and acdm were generally coherent, but there were regions in which spatial patterns of salinity and acdm did not coincide. Salinity was oppositely phased with discharge, whereas acdm was in phase but lagged discharge and typically remained high after maximum discharge. Along the river plume trajectory, acdm was inversely correlated with salinity, yet there was considerable deviation from conservative mixing behavior during all seasons. Positive anomalies in a linear relationship between salinity and acdm corresponded to areas of enhanced satellite-retrieved net primary productivity, suggesting the importance of phytoplankton biomass or its subsequent remineralization as a source of cdm. Negative anomalies tended to predominate at the distal sections of the plume trajectories, an observation consistent with the process of photo-oxidation of cdm over observed time scales of days to weeks.

Fleurs nombreuses, blanches, aromatiques, disposées en panicules axillaires; pétales légèrement plus longs que les sépales. Capsule linéaire, à trois angles arrondis, pendante, pouvant atteindre 45 cm de long, déhiscente, jaune cendré; graines généralement ailées, oléagineuses.
