1898 - Rough Riders Auteur(s) : Burgert Brothers, 1917- ( Photographer ) Résumé : At the outbreak of war with Spain in 1898, the U.S. Army was very small in numbers. This situation necessitated an immediate call for volunteers. President McKinley's appeal was overwhelmingly answered by a generation that had grown up in the shadow of their elders' Civil War glory.
One group answering the call was the First Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry Volunteers, headed by Colonel Leonard Wood, a distinguished army doctor and Medal of Honor recipient. The regiment was actually the brainchild of Theodore Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the navy and Wood's friend. Roosevelt, realizing his own lack of military experience, suggested Wood for the command.
The Rough Riders, as the regiment was soon known, comprised 1,250 men, including cowboys, Native Americans and eastern college athletes. Despite their dissimilarities, they were in excellent physical condition'a stark contrast to most of the other volunteer contingents.
The Rough Riders departed from Tampa in mid-June without their horses. They landed at Daiquiri on June 22 and two days later served with distinction in a battle at Las Guásimas.
Immediately prior to the conflict at San Juan, Colonel Wood was promoted to another field command, enabling Roosevelt as a full colonel to take command of the Rough Riders. On July 1, Roosevelt, having secured a horse, led his forces in a charge up Kettle Hill outside of Santiago. They achieved their goal and later in the day participated in the victory at San Juan Hill.
By seizing these heights, American guns commanded the harbor at Santiago. The Spanish position was imperiled and an abortive attempt by the Spanish navy to escape from the harbor was halted with devastating results. Spanish land forces surrendered shortly thereafter.
Roosevelt urged the Rough Riders' swift evacuation, fearing the continuing spread of disease. They returned to Montauk, Long Island, where they were held in quarantine before being mustered out in September.
More than one-third of the Rough Riders were casualties in the Spanish-American War, a fact that has led some observers to criticize Roosevelt for unnecessary risk-taking. Nevertheless, the Rough Riders became heroes to the American public and Roosevelt emerged as a major national figure. El Carculo Cubano de Tampa on Avenida Republica de Cuba. Auteur(s) : Robertson and Fresh Photographers, 1925-1960 Résumé : On October 10, 1899, Cuban immigrants formed a recreational society known as El Club Nacional Cubano. Three years later, the society of three hundred members changed its name to El CÃÂrculo Cubano. According to the 1902 charter, the CÃÂrculo Cubano was formed "for the mutual benefit and enjoyment of its members and for the charitable purposes and instruction of its members and the dissemination of knowledge among all classes of people." In order to preserve harmony among its diverse membership, the statutes of the club expressly prohibited any discussion within the society of labor, politics, or religion. In 1917, the Cuban Club opened the doors of its neoclassic clubhouse at 2010 Avenida República de Cuba in Ybor City. Since then, the CÃÂrculo Cubano has provided a theater, grand ballroom, medical clinic, cantina, gym, and library to its members. The activities of the Cuban Club have changed over time, but it remains open to all men and women who are dedicated to the preservation of the Cuban heritage and culture of Florida (Funding) Funded in part by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Ephemeral Cities Project. An early Hav-a-Tampa cigar label. Auteur(s) : Eli Witt Cigar Company ( Manufacturer ) Auteurs secondaires : Cigar City Collection Résumé : In many old photographs of downtown Tampa a very close scrutiny will uncover signs hanging from the buildings over the sidewalks with just three letters "ELI". Eli Witt distributed all of the leading brands of cigars manufactured in Tampa as well as brands manufactured in other cities and was very successful in developing sales of these brands. One very serious problem arose out of this success. It seemed that as soon as he had worked a brand of cigars up to where it was in demand, the manufacturer began selling direct to the retailers or to other wholesale firms in the area. This is when Mr. Eli realized that he needed a cigar brand of his own that he could control.
He reached this goal in 1918 when he arranged to purchase the Havatampa Cigar Company along with financial help of two of his associates, W. L. Van Dyke who was employed by him in 1907, and D. H. Woodbery whom he had employed in 1910, along with some relatives of these two. (Funding) Funded in part by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Ephemeral Cities Project.
