Impact of erosion, sedimentation, and structural heritage on the structure and kinematics of orogenic wedges: Analog models and case studies Auteur(s) : Malavieille, Jacques Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Geological Society of America Résumé : orogenic wedges Interaction between surface and tectonic processes plays a key role in the structural evolution, kinematics, and exhumation of rocks in orogenic wedges. The deformation patterns observed in analog models show that strain partitioning has a strong impact on the vertical component of displacement of tectonic units, which in return favors erosion in domains of important uplift. Partitioning is controlled by tectonic processes and by climate-dependent surface processes, including erosion and sedimentation. The effects of partitioning include localization of deformed domains, exhumation above areas of deep underplating, and steady-state maintenance of wedges for long time periods. Simple models illustrate well how the morphostructural evolution of mountain belts is determined by these complex interactions. Analogue modelling of the interaction between tectonics, erosion and sedimentation in foreland thrust belts Auteur(s) : Graveleau, Fabien Dominguez, Stephane Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Springer Verlag Résumé : International audience The structure and dynamic evolution of a mountain belt piedmont are controlled by strong interactions between tectonics, surface processes (erosion, sedimentation), and climate. Studying these couplings relies on detailed geometric and kinematic analysis of morphostructural markers (folds, faults, terraces, alluvial surfaces) and analysis of syntectonic sedimentation. To study quantitatively how these markers form, evolve and record deformation, we developed a new analogue modelling approach using a specific composite granular material. The originality stands in the simultaneous modelling of orogenic deformation mechanisms and erosion-transport-sedimentation processes, but also in the use of techniques allowing quantitative measurement of morphostructural evolution. This methodology opens new perspectives in the fields of geomorphology (relief dynamics), seismotectonics (study of active faults), and sedimentology (including sequential stratigraphy). Deformation of a continent above a subducting active spreading ridge. The Chile Triple Junction transversal, Central Patagonia (Chile-Argentina). ; Déformation d'un continent au-dessus d'une dorsale océanique active en subduction Auteur(s) : Scalabrino, Bruno Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Université Montpellier 2 Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc Yves Lagabrielle ; Jacques Malavieille Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : The spreading ridge subduction is an unavoidable process during the subduction-related belt elovution. The aim of this thesis concerns the evolution of the Central Patagonian Cordillera, at the latitude of the Chile triple junction, in relation with the Chile spreading ridge subduction inducing the opening of a slab-window beneath the South American plate. By a morphologic, and a structural analysis, coupled with the analysis of satelittes and topographic images, we show the influence of the slab-window development at 3 Ma on the morphostructural evolution of the Central Patagonia. During the Pliocene, the Central Patagonian Cordillera experiences a major extensional phase inducing the formation of transverse and internal depressions. Negative tectonic inversion, responsible to the rift-type topography, induces the inversion of the morphotectonic front and the disruption of the volcano-sedimentary piedmont with the rest of the Cordillera at 3 Ma. Radial extensional regime is characterized by a magnitude comprises between 800 m and 3500 meters and vertical movements are localized along polyphazed faults. We suggest that the Plio-Quaternary morphostructural evolution is related to the opening of the slab-window at 3 Ma beneath the Central Patagonia. The upwelling of asthenospheric hot mantle through the slab window induces the regional collapse of the Central Patagonian Cordillera.
The purpose of the current PhD work is to deepen our understanding of the history of the New Caledonia and Fairway basins, located west of New Caledonia, in order to better constrain the geodynamical evolution of the SW Pacific from Cretaceous to Oligocene. The analysis of new geophysical data has led to distinguish 3 main phases of this fragmentation: 1 Mid Cretaceous formation of the Fairway-Aotea Basin in a continental intra-arc position. The formation of this basin reflects the initial stage of continental fragmentation of the Eastern Gondwana margin. The causes of this fragmentation are to be searched for in a major change of the dynamics of the peri-Pacific subduction zone. 2 Latest late Eocene local deformation of the Northern NCB, synchronously with the New Caledonian obduction. We suggest that as the ophiolitic nappe was being obducted onto New Caledonia, the NC Basin subsided under the effect of the loading and underthrusted to accommodate the compressional deformation as a foreland flexural basin. 3 Regional Eocene Oligocene subsidence of the structures linking NC to New Zealand. The morphostructural style of this deformation leads us to suggest that detachment of the lower crust is the cause of subsidence. We therefore propose a model in which the renewal of the Australia-Pacific convergent plate boundary around 45 Ma would have driven the lithosphere to thicken, leading to a root instability and to its detachment in the mantle. These new results have regional petroleum implications, which are discussed in the PhD. The morphostructural and paleoseismologycal analysis of the NW and SE segments of Pambak-Sevan-Syunik fault (PSS), Armenia ; Analyse cinématique et paléosismologique des terminaisons NW et SE de la faille Pampak-Sevan-Syunik (PSS), Arménie Auteur(s) : Mkrtchyan, Mushegh Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Université Montpellier Jean-François Ritz Ara Avagyan Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : The territory of Armenia was located in the collision zone between Arabia and Eurasia, and is the seat of active intercontinental deformations, which was attested by the many historical earthquakes that have occurred in this region. All these destructive earthquakes show a strong regional seismic activity, and therefore it is important to evaluate the seismic hazard associated with active structures that generates this seismicity. This study presents the results of the analysis of the active tectonics within the northwestern and southeastern extensions of the Pambak-Sevan-Syunik fault (PSSF), a major right-lateral strike-slip fault cutting through Armenia (NW - SE). Quantifying the deformations in terms of geometry, kinematics, slip rates and earthquake activity, using cosmogenic 3He, OSL/IRSL and radiocarbon dating techniques, reveal different behaviors between the two regions.Within the northwestern extension, in the region of Amassia, the PSSF bends to the west and splits into two main WNW-ESE trending reverse faults defining a compressional pop-up structure. We estimate an uplift rate and a shortening rate of 0.5 ± 0.1 mm/y and 1.4 ± 0.6 mm/y, respectively. This suggests that most of the ~2 mm/y right lateral movement of the PSSF seems to be absorbed within the Amasia pop-structure.Within the southeastern extension, in the region of Tsghuk volcano, the PSSF shows signs of dying out at the southernmost tip of the Syunik graben. A very slow NS trending normal faulting associated with a slight right-lateral movement characterizes the tectonic activity in the region of Tsghuk volcano. We estimate vertical slip rates, EW stretching rate, and right-lateral slip rate of ~0.2 mm/y, ~0.1 mm/y and ~0.05 mm/y, respectively. These results lead to the conclusion that the right lateral movement observed further north along the PSSF is mainly transferred within other active faults further west within the Karabagh (Hagari fault or other structures further northwestwards).
Slope instabilities from echo-character mapping along the French Guiana transform margin and Demerara abyssal plain Auteur(s) : Loncke, L. Droz, Laurence Gaullier, V. Basile, C. Patriat, Martin Roest, Walter Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The French Guiana transform margin and Demerara abyssal plain have been recently surveyed in the framework of the EXTRAPLAC French Program of extension of the continental shelf (Guyaplac survey, Ifremer-IFP-SHOM-IPEV). Based on the interpretation of some of the data collected during the Guyaplac survey (Simrad-EM12 multibeam bathymetric data, backscatter imagery, and 3.5 kHz profiles), the area can be divided into three morphostructural domains. (1) The western Guiana margin, including a part of the Demerara plateau, an important bathymetric relief prolonging the continental platform off Guiana and Surinam. This domain is bounded by (1a) the NWSE trending northern border of the Demerara plateau which appears quite steep and corresponds to a transform segment of the margin, (1b) the N-S eastern border of the Demerara plateau which corresponds to a divergent segment of the margin. The Demerara plateau shows a segmented morphology, low slope gradients, and a very rough surface (ripples perpendicular to the slope direction). NNW-SSE structural steps seem to correspond to collapses of 100 km long blocs towards the east. Slumps initiate along these directions. The observed rough bathymetry seems to be related to creeping processes. At a greater scale (seismic data), this part of the margin has been totally destabilized (numerous imbricate transparent masses rooted at about 0.5 s.t.w.t.t. below seafloor). The NW-SE trending northern border of the Demerara plateau corresponds to a cliff-like continental slope, probably slightly smoother than other transform margins (Ghana/cote d'Ivoire margin). The N-S eastern border of Demerara plateau is characterized by numerous small-scale imbricate slumps. Some of these failures seem to be emplaced in the prolongation of the NNW-SSE structural steps identified on the Demerara plateau. (2) The eastern Guiana margin corresponds to a NW-SE oriented gullied transform margin segment. The associated continental slope is very steep and characterized by numerous imbricate slumps and related debris flows. Some undulated masses, probably corresponding to creeping sediments or to older mass-wasting events are still imprinted on bathymetry. This transform margin segment is nearly entirely destabilized and eroded. (3) The Demerara abyssal plain. This domain is characterized eastwards by channels belonging to the Amazon turbidite system and westwards, at the foot of Demerara continental slope, by sediment waves probably created by contour currents. To conclude, it seems that there is a strong relationship between the structure (transform and divergent segments) and the emplacement of recurrent slope instabilities. These are probably related to the steepness of the slopes but also to subsidence histories generating in some cases huge deep-seated collapses of the whole margin. Fluid ascents are common everywhere in the area, probably enhancing slope instability. Their origin is not constrained but the black shales or Cretaceous organic-rich layers could be good candidates.
