Résumé : Kalinago (Carib) Indians migrated from South America into the Windward Islands beginning about 1400. They resisted the Europeans, and eventually retreated to the more mountainous parts of St. Vincent and Dominica, where they inter-married with escaped African slaves. In 1796 the British deported the St. Vincent Kalinago (about 5,000) to the island of Ruatan off Honduras. From there, they moved into present-day Belize, where their descendants live today. Descendants of the Dominica Kalinago still live on Dominica. This print portrays a number of their customs.

Résumé : The social change which takes place in the French West Indies after the Second World War ensues from a historical interactive process. It occurs between 1946 and 1961, within the frame of the new dynamic fostered in the aftermath of the war. Here we refer to the new political status of Department, the outbreak of social conflicts during the process of decolonization, the public policies and the planning of “the economic and social development” of the overseas departments. The dynamic also includes the population growth with the birth of a new generation- from the sociological point of view. The aforementioned interaction instils the new type of society emerging in the French West Indies since the 1960’s, without drastically changing their colonial social structure. This transformation named “Departmentalization” seems paradoxical because it will generate “modern” social frustrations, while maintaining existing frustrations that stemmed from the plantation society. This process led to the transition from a slave society to a consumer society. It allows us to understand the persistence of a latent social unrest in these departments, in spite of the overall significant improvement of the living conditions during the early twentieth century.
La transformation sociale des Antilles françaises qui se produit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale résulte d’un processus interactif historique. Celui-ci se produit entre 1946 et 1961 autour des nouvelles dynamiques de l’après-guerre. Il s’agit du statut départemental, de la décolonisation avec l’explosion des conflits sociaux, de la politique publique de « développement économique et social » avec la planification dans les départements d’outre-mer, et de l’accroissement démographique avec l’apparition d’une nouvelle génération « sociologique ». C’est précisément cette interaction qui est à l’origine du nouveau type de société qui émerge aux Antilles à partir des années 1960 sans pour autant que leur structure sociale coloniale ne soit bouleversée. Cette construction qui prend le nom commun de « Départementalisation » est paradoxale car elle va générer des frustrations sociales « modernes », tout en maintenant des frustrations anciennes issues de la société de plantation. En induisant ainsi le passage d’un monde d’ « habitation » à un monde de consommation, cette construction permet de comprendre un peu mieux, le maintien, au début du XXIe siècle, d’un malaise social latent dans ces départements en dépit d’une amélioration sensible et générale des conditions de vie.

In the fragmented colonial society of the West Indies during the slavery period, building up a stable family required to get over many obstacles. The status differences, the lack of fluidity in the marriage market and the deep redefinition of the gender relations are interrelated phenomenon which question both the marriage as being the unique pattern of family organization and the structuration of family ties. If the official conjugal model remains the norm for white Creole women, it is not true neither for their husband nor for free coloured people and slaves. Therefore, the expansion of adultery and people living as husband and wife, which were denounced particularly by the religious authorities, lead to a high rate and continuous growth of illegitimate births. As a consequence, family ties gradually develop with no institutional control, hence no traces of them in the different sources but it also gives them an obvious flexibility, especially for the slaves.
Dans les sociétés coloniales fragmentées des Antilles de la période esclavagiste, les obstacles à la constitution de familles stables sont nombreux. Les différences de statut, le manque de fluidité du marché matrimonial, et la redéfinition profonde des rapports de genre sont autant de phénomènes articulés qui remettent en cause le mariage comme élément unique d'organisation de la famille et de structuration des relations de parenté. Si le modèle conjugal reconnu par les autorités reste la norme obligée pour les femmes blanches créoles, il n'en est pas de même pour leurs maris et pour les populations de couleur libre ou esclave. Aussi, l'essor du concubinage et des relations adultérines, dénoncé en particulier par les autorités religieuses, se concrétise par une illégitimité des naissances élevée et en croissance continue. Les liens familiaux se construisent ainsi en partie en dehors du contrôle institutionnel, ce qui leur confère une invisibilité dans les sources, mais aussi une souplesse certaine, particulièrement chez les esclaves.

Le nègre marron est aujourd’hui une figure incontournable du passé antillais, retracée à la fois par des écrits, scientifiques ou non, des productions artistiques et mémorielles. L’analyse des commémorations de l’abolition de l’esclavage ou des manifestations s’yrapportant depuis 1998, est réalisée notamment à travers la presse et les oeuvres monumentales. Construite sous forme d’inventaire elle permet de mieux mesurer la place et l’importance croissante de l’évocation du marronnage et de son emblème le nègre marron dans les manifestations depuis 1998. Le travail à partir des archives du Centenaire en 1948, souligne a contrario une présence très restreinte, qu’il faut mettre en rapport avec une autre quasi-absence, celle de l’esclave. En effet les cérémonies du Centenaire, qui se conjuguent avec les débuts de la mise en place de la départementalisation aux Antilles, mettent l’accent beaucoup plus sur la Libération, sur la fin d’une ignominie, que sur les conditions de vie et de fuite des habitations. Cette communication propose donc de suivre l’itinéraire du Nègre marron, sa transformation progressivement en héraut d’une résistance, débordant aujourd’hui largement la configuration du milieu esclavagiste. Il compose selon Glissant en 1981, « le seul vrai héros populaire des Antilles ». La communication souhaite mettre en perspective cette figure du héros, ses rythmes et ses connexions, sa patrimonialisation, mais aussi interroger l’extension du recours au terme de marronnage, en apparence hors de ses cadres initiaux. Centrée sur les Antilles françaises, cette communication espère poser les bases d’une comparaison avec d’autres pays de la grande Caraïbe.
