Saint Ann's Bay is the capital of the parish of Saint Ann, Jamaica. In 1494, Christopher Columbus landed in the area and named the spot Santa Gloria. The first building on the right, in the foreground, is Frank Watson's Off Course Betting establishment. This is a view of the beach from Wharf Street. Slide labeled Jam. This monument to Christopher Columbus, called La Santa Maria, is near Seville, Saint Ann. It was erected to honor, Columbus’s discovery of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and is located at the entrance to Maima-Seville Heritage Park. Columbus also spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. This monument is at the entrance to the Maima-Seville Heritage Park. In the distance of the image is a church. Along the road into the park are flags from various countries, including the Great Britain and the United States. The Manacas Iznaga Tower is located in Valle de los Ingenios in Trinidad, Cuba, which was a major center for sugar mills. The tower stands approximately 45 feet tall and was used by the sugarcane plantation owner in order to keep watch over his slaves in the fields. It was built in 1816 and stands seven stories high. The ringing of the bell signified various messages, but mostly the beginning and end of the work day for the slaves in the sugar fields. A local legend states that the tower was built by Pedro and Alejo Iznaga to house Alejo's wife, who had been unfaithful to him. The photograph also shows the remains of the Iznaga plantation, as well as several Royal Palm trees and a Poinciana tree in the background.

Fishing rods with fishing lines rest in the wake of a boat off the coast of Bimini, Bahamas. Bimini, the closest Bahamian island to the United States, is made up of two main islands, North Bimini and South Bimini, and several cays. Flowing north of Bimini is the Gulf Stream, a northward-flowing ocean current in the western North Atlantic Ocean. During February of 1957, this group of people travelled on the boat “Isabella” to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos, including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. Description : This paper examines the notion of sovereignty in an ever-changing postmodern world and its implications for tourism. New spaces have been created, old spaces have been united, and traditional barriers have been torn down. These and other manifestations of globalization are particularly poignant in island and coastal destinations. Empirical examples will be provided from Europe, North America, the Caribbean, and the Arctic to illustrate shifting notions of absolute sovereignty into supranationalist associations, cross-border cooperative relations, and in some cases, more austere extremes in asserting state sovereignty. All of these changes have salient implications for tourism from planning, marketing, and policy perspectives.

Cuban cigars had always enjoyed an enviable reputation among connoisseur smokers throughout the world, but they posed no particular threat to the American cigar market since a high tariff on Cuban cigars (but not tobacco leaf) made them too expensive for the average smoker. The Cuban province of Pinar del Rio and a region known as Vuelta Abajo were famous for growing a light colored tobacco leaf, the superb smoking ingredient of the famous clear Havana cigars. After 1868, Cuban tobacco was shipped in large quantities to the United States, where it was hand rolled into cigars by skilled Cuban artisans, revolutionizing the smoking habits and tastes of America.

Polo known as the game of kings was brought to Jamaica by the British in 1882 when they established one of the oldest polo clubs in the world. In 1892, Sam Burke founded the Saint Ann Polo Club, which moved to its present location at the Drax Hall Estate in 1905. Slide labeled Drax Polo Grounds St Anns Bay.

Résumé : The study conducted in the framework of an agreement between Ifremer and the Local fisheries committee at Audierne is part of a project to restore spiny lobster Palinurus elephas stock levels in the Iroise Sea. It is supported by professional fishermen from Finistère and by the Regional fisheries committee of Brittany. After a brief review of the way lobster stocks are managed worldwide, followed by the major biological and ecological features of red lobster and the state of fisheries in Europe and North Africa, the very poor state of the resource along French coast is borne out by the statistics of landings. Various scenarios (not alternatives) to promote the rebuilding of the biomass are suggested: minimum landing size increase, seasonal closure of the fishery, berried females protection, no fishing zones. The drift of phyllosoma larvae during their long larval stage is addressed using a 3-D hydrodynamic simulation model.
L'étude réalisée dans le cadre d'une convention entre Ifremer et le Comité local des Pêches d'Audierne s'inscrit dans un projet de reconquête des niveaux de ressource en langouste rouge Palinurus elephas en mer d'Iroise soutenu par les pêcheurs professionnels de la pointe du Finistère et par le Comité régional des Pêches de Bretagne. Après avoir rappelé brièvement les modalités de gestion des stocks de langoustes dans le monde puis les grands traits biologiques et écologiques de la langouste rouge et l'état des pêcheries en Europe et dans le nord de l'Afrique, le très mauvais état de cette ressource sur les côtes françaises est confirmé au travers des statistiques de débarquement. Divers scénarios (non alternatifs) visant à favoriser la reconstitution d'une biomasse sont proposés : augmentation de la taille minimale au débarquement, fermeture saisonnière de la pêche, protection des femelles ovigères et création de zones protégées. La dérive des larves phyllosomes au cours de leur longue phase larvaire est abordée par un modèle de simulation hydrodynamique en trois dimensions.

Outline from the website at http://www.reading.ac.uk/minorities/Projects/min-project-breaking-sexual-silences.aspx In recent years, some of the most urgent and highly-charged public and political debates in the Caribbean have centred on sexual citizenship and gay rights. To date, popular cultural forms and the acute homophobia of the dancehall have dominated national and international attention. The very public exchanges between Caribbean musicians and western-based gay rights campaigners have given the region a reputation for homophobia, intolerance and hate crimes. This project seeks to shift the axes of these debates by drawing on a recent body of Caribbean creative writing that addresses issues of sexual self-determination and sexual diversity in a more positive and progressive way. It will make visible the possibilities for understanding sexual differences and the modes of reconciliation to be found in a literary archive. The project will also engage a group of Caribbean scholars across other disciplines to develop a new language for articulating sexual difference. It will stage a panel debate for a Caribbean public, as well as producing academic publications and supporting graduate work.
