Context and aim : This study aimed to examine the effect of the tension wood G‐layer on the viscoelastic properties of wood. Methods : Tension wood and opposite wood samples were obtained from six French Guianese tropical rainforest species (Sextonia rubra, Ocotea guyanensis, Inga alba, Tachigali melinoni, Iyranthera sagotiana and Virola michelii); the tension wood of the former three of these species had a Glayer, whilst the tension wood from the latter three had no Glayer. Tensile dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was performed on green never dried wood samples in the longitudinal direction with samples submerged in a water bath at a temperature (30°C) and frequency (1 Hz) representative of the conditions experienced by wood within a living tree. Then, DMA was repeated with samples conditioned to an air-dried state. Finally, samples were oven-dried to measure longitudinal shrinkage. Results : Tension wood did not always have a higher longitudinal storage (elastic) modulus than opposite wood from the same tree regardless of the presence or absence of a G‐layer. For the species containing a G‐layer, tension wood had a higher damping coefficient and experienced a greater longitudinal shrinkage upon drying than opposite wood from the same species. No difference was found in damping coefficients between tension wood and opposite wood for the species that had no G‐layer. Conclusion : It is proposed that the different molecular composition of the G-layer matrix has an influence on the viscoelasticity of wood, even if a biomechanical gain is not yet clear. This study shows that rheological properties and longitudinal shrinkage can be used to detect the presence of a G‐layer in tension wood.

Challenging evaluation of tropical forest biodiversity requires the reporting of taxonomic diversity but also the systematic characterization of wood properties in order to discover new promising species for timber industry. Among wood properties, the dimensional stability is regarded as a major technological characteristic to validate whether a wood species is adapted to commercial uses. Cell structure and organization are known to influence the drying shrinkage making wood density and microfibrils angle markers of choice to predict wood dimensional stability. On the contrary the role of wood extractive content remains unclear. This work focuses on the fast-growing tropical species Bagassa guianensis and we report herein a correlation between heartwood drying shrinkage and extractive content. Chemical extractions and shrinkage experiments were performed on separate wood twin samples to better evaluate correctly how secondary metabolites influence the wood shrinkage behaviour. Extractive content were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed using HPLC and NMR spectroscopy. We found that B guianensis heartwood has a homogeneous low shrinkage along its radius that could not be explained only by its basic density. In fact the low drying shrinkage is correlated to the high extractive content and a corrected model to improve the prediction of wood dimensional stability is presented. Additionally NMR experiments conducted on sapwood and heartwood extracts demonstrate that secondary metabolites biosynthesis occurs in sapwood thus revealing B. guianensis as a Juglans-Type heartwood formation. This work demonstrates that B. guianensis, a fast-growing species associated with high durability and high dimensional stability, is a good candidate for lumber production and commercial purposes.

In Trinidad and Tobago, cocoa production is monitored by the Cocoa and Coffee Industry Board, which was established in 1961. Cocoa, used to make chocolate, is a traditional export crop in the country. Buildings like those pictured would be used for processing, drying, sorting, and storing cocoa beans. In this image, several children and adults can be found in the yard near buildings on the cocoa plantation. The buildings are made with wood and have zinc paneled roofs, some of the steps are made of concrete. The level flat area between the buildings on the far right would be used to dry cocoa beans. The beans would be spread out evenly on this area, then raked and turned so that beans were exposed to the sun for adequate drying. Slide labeled Cocoa Plantation Trinidad.

Trees can control their shape and resist gravity thanks to their ability to produce wood under tensile stress. This stress is known to be produced during the maturation of wood fibres but the mechanism of its generation remains unclear. This study focuses on the formation of the secondary wall in tension wood produced in artificially tilted poplar saplings. Thickness of secondary wall layer (SL) and gelatinous layer (GL) were measured from cambium to mature wood in several trees sampled at different times after tilting. Measurements on wood fibres produced before tilting show the progressive increase of secondary wall thickness during the growing season. After the tilting date, SL thickness decreased markedly from normal wood to tension wood while the total thickness increased compared to normal wood, with the development of a thick GL. However, even after GL formation, SL thickness continues to increase during the growing season. GL thickening was observed to be faster than SL thickening. The development of the unlignified GL is proposed to be a low cost, efficient strategy for a fast generation of tensile stress in broadleaved trees.

Two steel pan instrument makers are hammering the surfaces of drums to make the range of sound for steel pan instruments. One of the men is hammering a white steel drum, while the other is in the distance near red steel drums. These particular steel pans are made from used steel oil drums. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. In the yard are other used steel oil drums, white metal steel pan stands, and many breadfruit trees. In the background are buildings, some made of wood with zinc paneled roofs. There is also a poster advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra, a steel band active during the 1960s and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Some of the notices in the yard read as follows: "Notice don't sit stand lean or prop on the stands," "We are the greatest," "Notice absolutely no unnecessary coasting in the yard." Barbados is known for its traditional homes, “chattel houses,” because they could be disassembled and moved. Originally, these dwellings were built for plantation workers. Later, they were built by freed slaves and sharecroppers, who usually built the dwelling on blocks close to main roads so that they could be easily relocated as many were not landowners but rather tenants. Hallmarks of chattel house construction are steep gable roofs (to deflect wind and rain) and wood panel walls. The wooden jalousie windows on hinges and fretwork around windows offered shade and protection against the rain. Slide labeled Barb 17 typical house.

Résumé : Les grands domaines naturels, rattachés aux diverses stations de villégiature, étaient dépositaires des meilleurs lacs à truites, d’immenses territoires de sauvagine, de cerf de Virginie et d’un grand nombre de rivières à saumon. Si le littoral et la montagne ont agi comme attracteurs dans le cas de la villégiature, il en a été autrement pour les clubs de chasse et de pêche, qui sont apparus au milieu du XIXe siècle et se sont multipliés à compter de 1885. En l’occurrence, la mécanique à l’œuvre semble avoir posé la « grande nature » comme visée territoriale et le « coureur des bois » comme figure emblématique du héros romantique. L’argument développé dans cet article va s’employer à montrer que le tourisme et la villégiature ont constitué au Québec des procédures de valorisation positionnelle de nature géoanthropologique. Le « clubage » des Laurentides, au sens large du terme, aura constitué en ce sens le présupposé de leur colonisation intérieure. Qu’il s’agisse du lac Saint-Jean, de la Mauricie ou des Laurentides en général, on retrouve l’efficacité du parcours structural de l’établissement humain développé en géographie structurale : l’occupation utilitaire d’un territoire disponible présuppose non pas d’abord une transformation de la nature, mais une valorisation des positions abstraites par le tourisme et la villégiature. 
The large natural areas, linked to the various resorts, were custodians of the best trout lakes, huge areas of waterfowl, deer of Virginia and a large number of salmon rivers. Whether Lake Saint-Jean, Mauricie and Laurentides in general, we find the effectiveness of the structural pathways of human settlement geography developed structural: the occupation of territory utility presupposes not available not primarily a transformation of nature but a recovery of vague ... by the tourism and the holiday resort.
