Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. In 1909, Steamboat Robert Fulton, pictured, went into service for the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948. In 1959, the steamboat was brought to land at Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. In this image, automobiles are parked next to the offices of Owens-Illinois Incorporated. Men are gathered near the end of the steamboat. Slide labeled Pay Day Owens Illinois Co. Four people and a dog walk on a path near houses in Great Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. A group of three people, wearing sunglasses, walk side by side toward the photographer. The group is made up of one man with a pipe in his mouth, a woman dressed in a white bathrobe, and another man who has a camera around his neck and wears a red shirt. In the distance, a person is bent over touching their pant leg while a dog approaches behind him or her. Another man can be seen sitting on a porch in one of the nearby houses. During February of 1957, this group of people travelled on the boat “Isabella” to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos, including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. Many of the Loyalist arrived from the New England area of the United States of America introducing those architectural elements to the island. The following marine turtles have been recorded in the Bahamas: Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, and Kemp’s Ridley Turtle. The Green Turtle is listed (2013) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened species as endangered. All marine turtles are now fully protected under Bahamian law, including the Green Turtle. Green Turtle meat and cartilage were used to make turtle soup which was once a delicacy in the Bahamian Out Islands.
