Résumé : The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The North-Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Pycnogonida have been the focus in 1948 of a very comprehensive and documented review by J. W. Hedgpeth followed by a catalogue of the stations of the different expeditions which worked in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the studied species. Moreover, the work of Marcus (1940) on the South-American Pycnogonida is an excellent basis for the study of the tropical Atlantic Pycnogonida. Recently, J.-H. Stock (1954 a) published a preliminary study on Pycnogonida collected at small depths in the Caribbean. During the 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier", 15 species of Pycnogonida were collected at 16 stations which can be classified, from a biogeographic point of view, in five groups of unequal importance: the floating sargassum (8 stations), the Little Caribbean (5 stations), the Bermudas (1 station), the surroundings of Wood Hole (1 station), the banks of Newfoundland (1 station).
La croisière 1951 du « Président-Théodore-Tissier» a duré du 13 février au 30 juin 1951. Pendant ces quatre mois et demi, le navire, parti de Brest, s'est rendu successivement à Madère, aux Antilles française, aux Bermudes, à Woods Hole, à Halifax, sur les Bancs de Terre-Neuve, aux Açores, à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, et est rentré à Brest après avoir parcouru plus de 13.000 milles dan l'Atlantique Nord. Les Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique Nord-Ouest et des Antilles ont fait l'objet en 1948 d'une révision très complète et documentée de J. W. Hedgpeth suivie d'un catalogue des stations des différentes expéditions ayant travaillé dans l'Atlantique Nord et des espèces récoltées. Par ailleurs, le travail de Marcus (1940) sur les Pycnogonides sud-américains constitue une excellente base pour l'étude des Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique tropical. Enfin, tout récemment J.-H. Stock (1954 a) a publié une étude préliminaire des Pycnogonides récoltés à faible profondeur dans les Antilles. Résumé : The first record of interstitial polychaetous annelids dates no more than forty years. Presently, the total number of interstitial species described is about one hundred. Up to the present, the large group of Aphroditoidea includes no interstitial representative. A few samples made by Pr Swedmark and M. Lasserre in Bermudas enable the discovery of an undescribed species of an interstitial Sigalionidae, Pholoe swedmarki Sp. n., together with two other interstitial species of Pisionidae and Syllidae, new to the western tropical atlantic. From a morphological point of view, the comparison of P. swedmarki sp. n. with the other species of the genus reveals some adaptations to the interstitial life: reduction of the body size, reduction or, at the contrary, enlargement of some appendages of the anterior part, lack of pigmentation. From the biological point of view, P. swedmarki sp. n. displays a remarkable group of characteristics : extreme reduction of the eggs numbers, extension of the reproductive period, pregnancy of the embryos and juveniles up to a very late ontogenetical stage. The hypothesis of an intra-elytral pregnancy, involving an internal fertilization, is discussed. By its morphology and biology, P. swedmarki sp. n. forms the first undeniable example of adaptation to the interstitial life among the Aphroditoidea. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
La découverte des premières Annélides Polychètes interstitielles remonte à peine à une quarantaine d'années. A l'heure actuelle, le nombre total d'espèces interstitielles décrites est de l'ordre d'une centaine. Jusqu'à présent, le vaste groupe des Aphroditoidea ne comprenait aucun représentant interstitiel. Quelques récoltes effectuées aux Bermudes par le Pr Swedmark et M. Lasserre ont permis de découvrir une espèce inédite de Sigalionidae interstitiel, Pholoe swedmarki sp. n., en compagnie de deux autres espèces de Pisionidae et de Syllidae interstitielles encore inconnues dans l'Atlantique tropical Ouest. Sur le plan morphologique, la comparaison de P. swedmarki sp. n. avec les autres espèces du genre met en évidence un certain nombre d'adaptations à la vie interstitielle : réduction de la taille du corps, réduction ou, au contraire, développement de certains appendices de la région antérieure, absence de pigmentation. Du point de vue biologique, P. swedmarki sp. n. présente un ensemble d'adaptations remarquables : réduction extrême du nombre d'oeufs, allongement de la période de reproduction, gestation des embryons et des jeunes vers jusqu'à un stade ontogénétique très avancé. L'hypothèse d'une gestation intra-élytrale, impliquant une fécondation interne, est avancée. Par sa morphologie et sa biologie, P. swedmarki sp. n. constitue le premier exemple incontestable d'adaptation à la vie interstitielle chez un Aphroditoidea. [OCR NON CONTRÔLE]

Résumé : When Henry B. Plant brought the railroad to Tampa in 1884, he opened the door for many businesses to locate and flourish here. The railroad was at the center of the city's economy. From downtown it went to Port Tampa where one could board a Plant steamship to Jamaica, Cuba, New Orleans, Bermuda or other destinations. A spur of the rail line brought the train up to the west front of the hotel so guests could depart the train and walk directly into the lobby. The Tampa Bay Hotel cost approximately 2.5 million dollars to build and $500,000 to furnish. Consisting of 511 rooms, some of which were suites of 3-7 rooms, it provided a degree of luxury never before seen in Tampa. Most of the rooms had their own baths and all had electricity and telephones. In addition, guests were surrounded by a varied collection of furniture, porcelains, Venetian-style mirrors, and sculptures gathered by Mr. and Mrs. Plant in their travels in Europe. The Tampa Bay Hotel opened in 1891 amid wide fanfare and celebration. Henry Plant's dream was now a reality. The newspapers of the day described it as "brightly illuminated, filled with sumptuous decorations, thrilling music and graced with turrets, domes and minarets towering heavenward and glistening in the sun." It was a Victorian palace. The hotel was a lively place with balls, tea parties, and organized hunts during the winter social season. It was open seasonally from December to April in the 1890's. Once a guest arrived at the hotel, he needed to be entertained. Guests went wild game hunting as well as fresh and salt-water fishing. Water sports were also included like sailing, rowing, and canoeing. For the less adventuresome, there were bicycles, carriages, and rickshaws to ride you around the property. The hotel also offered golf, tennis, shuffleboard, billiards, and even a racetrack.

The ‘International Intercomparison Exercise of fCO₂ Systems’ was carried out in 1996 during the R/V Meteor Cruise 36/1 from Bermuda/UK to Gran Canaria/Spain. Nine groups from six countries (Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, USA) participated in this exercise, bringing together 15 participants with seven underway fugacity of carbon dioxide (fCO₂) systems, one discrete fCO₂ system, and two underway pH systems, as well as systems for discrete measurement of total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon. Here, we compare surface seawater fCO₂ measured synchronously by all participating instruments. A common infrastructure (seawater and calibration gas supply), different quality checks (performance of calibration procedures for CO2, temperature measurements) and a common procedure for calculation of final fCO₂ were provided to reduce the largest possible amount of controllable sources of error. The results show that under such conditions underway measurements of the fCO₂ in surface seawater and overlying air can be made to a high degree of agreement (±1 μatm) with a variety of possible equilibrator and system designs. Also, discrete fCO₂ measurements can be made in good agreement (±3 μatm) with underway fCO₂ data sets. However, even well-designed systems, which are operated without any obvious sign of malfunction, can show significant differences of the order of 10 μatm. Based on our results, no “best choice” for the type of the equilibrator nor specifics on its dimensions and flow rates of seawater and air can be made in regard to the achievable accuracy of the fCO₂ system. Measurements of equilibrator temperature do not seem to be made with the required accuracy resulting in significant errors in fCO₂ results. Calculation of fCO₂ from high-quality total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT) and total alkalinity (AT) measurements does not yield results comparable in accuracy and precision to fCO₂ measurements.
