Résumé : Tampa's cigar workers followed the direction of their own independent union, popularly known as La Resistencia, in the general strike of 1901.The major dispute in 1901 involved efforts of manufacturers to establish branch factories in Pensacola and Jacksonville. The union interpreted these moves as an attempt to maintain an open shop policy and struck to force a closing of these operations. Strike leadership was in Spanish and Cuban hands, but Italians were active in the ranks and in supplying street-corner oratory that helped to maintain worker solidarity. Appeals to the strike cause were effective in prompting numerous workers to leave Tampa and find employment elsewhere in an effort to send back support

Résumé : Ybor arrived in Key West and opened a cigar factory in 1869. He was not the first manufacturer to open a factory there, however. Joseph Seidenberg of New York City had started a factory in 1868, when only a few small cigar shops operated in Key West.. Seidenberg produced a brand, 'La Rosa Espanola' (sometimes misspelled in older publications as 'La Rosa Espainola'), his popular brand in Key West, and in his factory later opened in Tampa.

Résumé : Verso "Emilio Pons, Sr., with Candido Ybor established the Emilio Pons Cigar Factory in 1889 on the north-east corner of 17th Street and 5th Avenue. This is the first factory of local origin inTampa. Jose' Marti, the Cuban patriot, made his last speech in Tampa before the cigar workers of the Pons factory. ....Mr. Pons was a member of the City Council, and an intimate friend of V. M. Ybor."

Résumé : The society grew in membership so rapidly that it leased the Orange Hotel on Tampa Street in June 1903 for use as a sanitarium until the original Covadonga Sanitarium opened on Ola Avenue in April 1905 with 54 beds. The second Covadonga Hospital on 21st Avenue opened in October 1927. The hospitals were called Covadonga in homage to the Virgin of Covadonga who appeared to Pelayo at the beginning of the Reconquest of Spain in the 8th century which freed the country from Moorish rule.

Résumé : A Historical marker "The first Havana cigar was rolled at this site by Sanchez y Haya Ca., on April 13, 1886. Licensed as Factory No. 1 with Don Ignacion Haya and Don Serafin Sanchez as propritors. Superintendent of the factory was Laurcano Sanchez. At the end of the first year of this factory was turning out 500,000 cigars per month. Ignacio Haya Label cigars are still be produced in Ybor City."

Résumé : Tampa had no existing philanthropic or charitable institutions at the beginning of this immigration wave and, in comparison to other communities, religious institutions played a relatively modest role there. El Centro Español was founded by the Spanish elite who dominated Ybor City, to preserve their identity, provide recreational opportunities and to offer low-cost health care for the many single men and the increasing number of families settling in the area. The club's Sanatorio, completed in 1906, was probably the most modern and complete hospital in Florida at the time.

Résumé : This is the first Ybor Cigar Factory which later became the hisotric Liceo Cubano. It served as a theatre and town hall in the 1880s Mirta and Jennie, Ybor's daughters performed in the first show in 1888. Later Jose Marti would be fetedhere, made his two famous speeched and formed the Cuban Revolutionary Pary on 7th Avenue and 13th Street, an historic marker designates the corner of the "Cradle of Cuban Liberty".
