Ascidies récoltées par le « Président Théodore Tissier » (campagne de printemps 1951)

Résumé : From February to June 1951 the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" sailed all the way to the French Caribbean, via Madeira, then to the coasts of Nova Scotia, on the banks of Newfoundland, via the Bermudas, and back to Lorient via the Azores Islands. During this cruise, an important material was sampled by A. Bourdillon, Research Attaché in the Marine Station of Endoume and invited by the Scientific and Technical Institute of Marine Fisheries. Ascidians form the greatest share of this material. They can be grouped in four batches: French Caribbean, Bermudas, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. But the French Caribbean batch and that of Newfoundland are by far the most interesting, considering the number and variety of the species they hold. From a geographic point of view, only two groups are worth being studied: 1° The French Caribbean batch which contains only tropical species, to which can be linked the Bermudas batch, islands which although located at a high latitude benefit from a subtropical hydrological regime. 2° The Newfounland batch, which has a cold character, and to which can be linked the Nova Scotia batch.
Pendant la période allant du mois de février au mois de juin 1951 le « Président-Théodore-Tissier » a effectué une longue croisière qui, par Madère, l'a mené jusqu'aux Antilles françaises, puis par les Bermudes et les côtes de Nouvelle-Ecosse sur les bans de Terre-Neuve, le cheminl du retour ver Lorient passant par les Açores. Durant cette campagne, un matériel important a été prélevé par A. Bourdillon, attaché de Recherche à la station Marine d'Endoume, invité par l'lnstitut Scientifique et technique des Pêches maritimes pour participer à la croisière. [OCR NON CONTRÔLE] Les ascidies constituent une part importante de ce matériel. Elles peuvent se répartir en quatre lots : Antilles françaies, Bermudes, Nouvelle-Ecosse, Terre-Neuve. Mais le lots de Antilles Française principalement et celui de Terre-Neuve sont de beaucoup les plus intéressants par le nombre et la variété des espèces qu'ils renferment. Du point de vue géographique, deux groupes seulement sont à considérer : 1° Le groupe des Antilles françaises ne renfermant que des espèces de caratères tropical et auquel on peut rattacher le groupe des Bermudes, îles qui malgré leur latitude assez élevée bénéficient d'un régime hydrologique subtropical. 2° Le groupe de Terre-Neuve à caractère froid auquel se rattache le groupe de Nouvelle Ecosse. Mesoscale variability from a high-resolution model and from altimeter data in the North Atlantic Ocean

Résumé : The objective of the paper is to analyze the degree of realism of the Parallel Ocean Program ( POP) model of the Los Alamos Laboratory using the combined TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS-1/2 (TPERS) sea level anomaly (SLA) data sets and to present a detailed study of mesoscale characteristics in the North Atlantic. This description spans 8 years of data from 1993 to 2000. At first, we focus on the analysis of the mean eddy kinetic energy ( EKE) and show that the major characteristics of mesoscale variability are realistically simulated despite an overestimation of the EKE model in the Gulf Stream region. We then describe the SLA space and timescales and propagation velocities at a resolution never achieved before. There is a high level of agreement between the model and altimeter values regarding spatial scales and propagation velocities. POP timescales are, however, significantly longer in the subtropical regions. The westward zonal propagation velocity of both the model and the observations are higher than the speed computed from standard Rossby wave theory. The effect of mean current advection on POP and TPERS propagation velocities is also clearly seen in the Labrador Current and in the Gulf Stream and its recirculations. Finally, a study of the seasonal and interannual variability of the high-frequency (HF) EKE is carried out. The model reproduces accurately most of the HF-EKE seasonal variations in the Caribbean Sea and at high latitudes despite a phase advance. A clear HF-EKE interannual variability is then evidenced. Our hypothesis is that a contraction of the subpolar and subtropical gyres due to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) could explain a reduction of the eddy activity in the North Atlantic Current, in the Newfoundland basin, and in the Azores Current. In the Caribbean Sea, the interannual variability of the EKE for both POP and TPERS seems to be caused by an interannual variability of the wind stress.

Les pycnogonides de la croisière 1951 du « Président Théodore Tissier »

Résumé : The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The North-Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Pycnogonida have been the focus in 1948 of a very comprehensive and documented review by J. W. Hedgpeth followed by a catalogue of the stations of the different expeditions which worked in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the studied species. Moreover, the work of Marcus (1940) on the South-American Pycnogonida is an excellent basis for the study of the tropical Atlantic Pycnogonida. Recently, J.-H. Stock (1954 a) published a preliminary study on Pycnogonida collected at small depths in the Caribbean. During the 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier", 15 species of Pycnogonida were collected at 16 stations which can be classified, from a biogeographic point of view, in five groups of unequal importance: the floating sargassum (8 stations), the Little Caribbean (5 stations), the Bermudas (1 station), the surroundings of Wood Hole (1 station), the banks of Newfoundland (1 station).
La croisière 1951 du « Président-Théodore-Tissier» a duré du 13 février au 30 juin 1951. Pendant ces quatre mois et demi, le navire, parti de Brest, s'est rendu successivement à Madère, aux Antilles française, aux Bermudes, à Woods Hole, à Halifax, sur les Bancs de Terre-Neuve, aux Açores, à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, et est rentré à Brest après avoir parcouru plus de 13.000 milles dan l'Atlantique Nord. Les Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique Nord-Ouest et des Antilles ont fait l'objet en 1948 d'une révision très complète et documentée de J. W. Hedgpeth suivie d'un catalogue des stations des différentes expéditions ayant travaillé dans l'Atlantique Nord et des espèces récoltées. Par ailleurs, le travail de Marcus (1940) sur les Pycnogonides sud-américains constitue une excellente base pour l'étude des Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique tropical. Enfin, tout récemment J.-H. Stock (1954 a) a publié une étude préliminaire des Pycnogonides récoltés à faible profondeur dans les Antilles. Au cour de la campagne 1951 du «Président-Théodore-Tissier », 15 espèces de Pycnogonides ont été recueillies en 16 stations qui peuvent, au point de vue biogéographie, être classés en cinq groupes d'importance très inégale: les sargasses flottantes (8 stations), les petites Antilles (5 stations), les Bermudes (1 station), les environs de Wood Hole (1 station), les Bans de Terre-Neuve (1 station).
