The Oman ophiolite is regarded as derived from a fast spreading oceanic ridge. As in its present-day marine analogs, expectedly, the gabbro unit crystallized in a large magma chamber underneath a small melt lens. In ophiolites, this melt lens is reduced to a horizon mapped in the field, where the floor and the roof of the melt lens joined. The magmatic activity of the former melt lens has been studied in gabbros located below the melt lens horizon. Beneath a stable melt lens, gabbros subside and drift through the steep walls of the magma chamber as steeply foliated gabbros. In contrast, in unstable melt lenses more specifically considered here, flat-lying gabbros are exposed beneath the lens. These gabbros were settling on the floor while the melt lens was retreating. Their strong magmatic foliations and lineations point to a dynamic deposition on the floor, and lineation trends record the structure of convection rolls within the lens. Time constraints suggest a similar to 100 year periodicity of melt recharge by short and powerful melt pulses followed by a shorter time of convection activity after recharge and a longer period of static magma settling, as recently proposed for the East Pacific Rise. At each new melt pulse, the lens nearly doubles its volume by surface expansion, within a short time lapse, before slowly and progressively retreating to feed crustal accretion. Large horizontal surface inflation of the lens better explains the seawater hydration of the accreting crust than melt lens vertical motion through the lid.

Résumé : The Rift Valley between 36° 42'N and 36° 55'N in the Atlantic Ocean is 31 km wide, with half-widths of 12 and 19 km for the western and eastern sides respectively. Both outer edges of the Rift Valley stand about 1500 m above an Inner Floor where very fresh pillow lavas occur. The Inner Floor probably includes the locus of new crust ; and its bordering slopes, which are particularly well-defined on the western side, limit to less than about 2.5 km the width of the zone over which new crust may have evolved with little or no vertical displacement. The width of the locus of new crust may be less than 0.5 km between 36° 45'N and 36° 47'N, where the deepest slopes of the Rift Valley walls nearly merge. Near 36° 50'N, the Inner Floor accommodates an approximately 1 km wide, 4 km long Central High, with a height of up to 250 m. In this area, the locus of new crust may also occupy a very narrow zone ; it may lie either along the Central High or along a trough flanking the Central High. The magnetic anomaly pattern indicates that, since the beginning of the Brunhes epoch (6.9 X 10(5) yr B.P.), the eastern limb has grown approximately twice as fast as the western limb. Using extrapolated spreading rates, the ages of the outer edges of the Rift Valley are 1.3 and 1.7 m.y. for the eastern and western sides respectively. Comparison with data for the Rift Valley in other parts of the ocean further suggests that the residence time of new crust in the Rift Valley is about 1.5 m.y. Uplift of crust from the Inner Floor, which may be dominated by lithospheric thickening, may thus be primarily a function of age. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Résumé : Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1256D reached for the first time the transition zone between the sheeted dike complex and the uppermost gabbros. The recovered crustal section offers a unique opportunity to study the deepest part of the hydrothermal system in present-day oceanic crust. We present a structural analysis of electrical borehole wall images. We identified, and measured the orientations of four categories of structures: major faults, minor fractures, possibly hydrothermal veins, and dikes. All structures tend to strike parallel to the paleo-ridge axis. Three major fault zones (meter thick) and dikes are steeply dipping (~ 75° on average) outward the ridge. Centimeter-thick moderately conductive planar features are interpreted as hydrothermal veins, are organized in arrays of consistent spacing, thickness, and orientation, and are dipping about 15-20° toward the ridge. This structural pattern is interpreted as an on-axis paleohydrothermal circulation system, with vertical, dike-parallel fractures, and sub-horizontal high-temperature hydrothermal veins at the base of the sheeted dike, which was subsequently rotated ~ 15° westward around a ridge-parallel, sub-horizontal axis. This rotation can be caused by upper-crustal block rotation along a listric normal fault, and/or subsidence at the ridge axis.
