Résumé : Arbusto de 2 a 3 m, aromático, de madera suave. Hojas ovadas u oblongo-ovadas de hasta 60 cm de largo, agudas a corto acuminadas en el ápice, cordadas en la base, lóbulos basales redondeados, marcadamente desiguales. Espigas de color verde pálido, de 10 a 20 cm de largo; brácteas redondeadas y densamente ciliadas. Frutos pequeños agrupados en las espigas.
Arbuste pouvant atteindre 2 à 3 m, aromatique, bois tendre. Feuilles ovées ou oblongues-ovées, pouvant avoir 60 cm de long, à l’extrémité aiguë à terminée en pointe courte, cordées à la base, lobes à base arrondie, fortement inégaux. Epis de couleur vert pâle, de 10 à 20 cm de long; bractées arrondies et pourvues de cils denses. Petits fruits groupés sur les épis.
Soft-wooded aromatic shrub or tree 1-6m high.  Leaves ovate or ovate-elliptical, 20-40 x 12-25 cm, acute to short acuminate at the apex, deeply and unequally cordate-auriculate at base, margins densely white-ciliate, petiole winged to the apex; inflorescence a spike, whitish to light yellow, pendulous, 10-20 cm x 3-5 mm; fruit, small, three-angled.
Nativa del sureste de México y Centroamérica, cultivada y naturalizada en Cuba y Florida.
Originaire du sud-est du Mexique et de l’;Amérique Centrale, cultivée et naturalisée à Cuba et en Floride.

Résumé : Arbol de hasta 25 m de alto. Hojas simples elíptico-lanceoladas, de hasta 12 cm, acuminadas. Flores blancas, con líneas rojas, amarillas por dentro, pétalos de 1 cm. Cápsula muy estrecha y larga, de hasta 60 cm, a veces más y 3 mm de ancho; semillas plumoso-pubescentes.
Arbre pouvant atteindre 25 m de haut. Feuilles simples elliptico-lancéolées, pouvant atteindre 12 cm, acuminées. Fleurs blanches, avec des lignes rouges, jaunes à l';intérieur, pétales de 1 cm. Capsule fine et allongée, pouvant atteindre 60 cm, et parfois 3 mm et plus de largeur; graines plumeuses, velues.
Tree up to 25 m tall. Leaves simple, opposite in whorls, ovate-lanceolate 5-14 cm x 2-5.5 cm; inflorescence a panicle, flowers 2.5-3cm long x 3-3.4cm wide, white with pink lobes, yellow inside, with purple lines and yellow bands; fruit a capsule 35-77 cm x 4 mm; seeds feathery at both ends.
Originaria de Jamaica y La Hispañola. Introducida en las Antillas Menores y norte de Sudamérica.

Résumé : Arbol de hasta 15 m de alto con corteza blanquecina, suave y madera dura y pesada. Hojas obovadas o elípticas, obtusas, con venación finamente reticulada, corto pecioladas. Panículas con flores blancas, glandulosas; cáliz con 5 lóbulos. Fruto ovoide, negro al madurar.
Arbre pouvant atteindre 15 m de haut, écorce blanchâtre et douce, bois dur et lourd. Feuilles obovées ou elliptiques, obtuses, à nervation finement réticulée, avec un court pétiole. Panicules avec fleurs blanches glanduleuses; calice à 5 lobes. Fruit ovoïde, noir une fois parvenu à maturité.
Evergreen tree up to 15 m high with smooth, whitish, variegated and flaking bark, hard and heavy wood.  Leaves simple, entire, opposite in pairs, dark green, leathery, oblong to elliptic, obtuse at the tip, rounded at the base, 15-20 x 5-7 cm, prominent  venation, highly aromatic when crushed; inflorescence a compound panicle 5-10 cm long, flowers numerous 3-4 mm long, white; fruit a subglobose to ellipsoid berry, 8-10 mm long, thickly covered with small convex glands, black when ripe.

Résumé : Coarse woody debris (CWD, dead wood sections a parts per thousand yen10 cm diameter) represents a large store of carbon in tropical forests; however, estimates of the flux of carbon from CWD in these forests remain poorly constrained. The objective of this study was to resolve the dry/wet season response of respiration in CWD (R (cwd)), and investigate the importance of biotic and abiotic factors for predicting the seasonal change of R (cwd) at the ecosystem level. This study presents a 4-month time series of R (cwd) measurements conducted on 42 dead trees (26 species) at the Paracou Research Station in French Guiana. R (cwd) measurements were repeated 13 times on each CWD sample from July to November 2011, spanning the transition from wet to dry season, and then from dry season to the following wet season. Seasonal drought caused monthly R (cwd) to drop by 20.5 +/- A 5.1% over the wet-dry transition. Changes in woody tissue moisture content explained 41.9% of the measured seasonal variability in R (cwd), but 60% of the seasonal variability in mean forest R (cwd) rates could be modelled using surface soil water content. We estimate that R (cwd) is approximately 5% of annual ecosystem respiration (R (eco)) and that seasonal variations in R (cwd) contribute appreciably to seasonal variations of R (eco), and should be included in functional models simulating the response of tropical rainforest ecosystems to current and future climate.
