This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices are used in order to characterize the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS, carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for the stocks assessment provide the data. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are included in the analysis when the index values are available from the published literature (North Sea, Scotian Shelf, Kenya, French Guyana). It is argued from the diversity indices analysis that the Gulf of Lions community is more diverse and less disturbed than the Bay of Biscay one. This result is not consistent with a fishing effect but with biogeography. The total biomass variability and the slope variability of size spectra are higher in the most harvested areas than in the least ones. On the contrary, the species-area slope is the lowest in the most harvested areas. Theoretically, biotic interactions decrease the total biomass variability and the spectra slope variability because of compensations and increase the species area slope because of competitive exclusion. It is concluded that harvesting alters biotic interactions and favour local coexistence by decreasing competitive exclusion. The species diversity maintenance depends on competitive exclusion. Hence, biodiversity is threatened not only by a direct fishing effect but also by a dynamics alteration. Reproducibility of the multi-component aspect of species diversity across different areas and scales: towards the constitution of a shortlist of complementary indices for monitoring fish diversity? Auteur(s) : Gaertner, Jean-claude Merigot, Bastien Relini, Giulio Bertrand, Jacques Mazouni, Nabila Politou, Chrissi-yianna Gil De Sola, Luis Kallianiotis, Argyris Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Publishing, Inc Résumé : Recent theoretical and field studies conducted in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems have suggested that diversity could be a more complex and multi-component concept than previously thought. However, it is still poorly understood to what extent the information provided by the various indices is complementary with regard to diversity, and to what extent this complementarity is reproducible in different situations or at different scales of observation. In the present work, we have analysed the reproducibility of the empirical relationships between 11 diversity indices related to four major aspects (components) of species diversity (species richness, rarity, evenness and species taxonomy) in order to determine whether there is a general pattern of redundancy or complementarity in diversity measures that holds across years, areas and spatial scales. We have applied this approach to groundfish diversity through the analysis of 2404 trawl hauls collected during the first large-scale annual surveys carried out using a single sampling design throughout the northern Mediterranean Sea (ranging from 36.3 to 45.7 degrees N, and 5.3 degrees W to 28 degrees E). Whatever the years, areas and scales studied, we found a strong reproducibility in the number and the nature of the main complementary components of diversity. The whole set of diversity indices considered may be roughly split into 6 complementary groups of descriptors. This result highlights that, in contrast to what is still the usual practice, monitoring diversity should not be based on only one or two of the most widely used components, even at large scale. Finally, in a context where developing tools for monitoring diversity is considered as a high priority worldwide, the strong reproducibility of the relationships between diversity indices we observed offers a basis for discussion of the feasibility and relevance of proposing a general shortlist of indices for monitoring diversity at different management scales. Different surveys provide similar pictures of trends in a marine fish community but not of individual fish populations Auteur(s) : Trenkel, Verena Pinnegar, John Rochet, Marie-joelle Rackham, Brian Trenkel, Verena Pinnegar, John Rochet, Marie-joelle Rackham, Brian Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Choice of sampling method and survey period can have an important impact on the perception of the structure and dynamics of an ecological community. For the Celtic Sea fish assemblage we compared data obtained by three different trawl surveys: an autumn groundfish survey with a GOV trawl, and a spring and an autumn groundfish survey, both carried out with a Portuguese high-headline trawl. Time-series of abundance estimates were not consistent among surveys for all species and were generally very noisy. An analysis of variance components showed that the sampling method contributed more to the variance in abundance estimates compared to survey period, interannual variability, or even sampling variance. Overall community assessments based on indicators such as proportions of non-commercial and piscivorous species, and the proportion of benthic species showed similar trends for all data series. The shape of the size spectrum based on abundances per length class summed over all fish species, although stable over time, was highly sensitive to the sampling method. With the exception of size spectra, community indicators for marine fish assemblages monitored by surveys seem to be robust to survey period and trawling gear, but species abundance trends are method dependent. Campagnes RESSGASC 1992-1995 et EVHOE 1995 Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : Numerous invertebrates were collected during various scientific trawling surveys carried out in the Bay of Biscay (RESSGASC, EVHOE), and the adjacent areas between 1993 and 1995. The species captured by the same trawling methods used by professional fishermen represent only a fraction of the known invertebrate fauna in the Bay. In addition to an inventory of the species, a simple key allows easy access to faunistic groups. The species, some of which are economically interesting, form the subject of a short description and, for the most part, a colour illustration.
Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach Auteur(s) : Gaertner, Jean-claude Chessel, Daniel Bertrand, Jacques Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient is structured around three major regions: the coast, the continental shelf and the continental slope. Despite sampling variations that occurred during the course of the study, the analysis showed a high degree of reproducibility for this spatial pattern. With the exception of Mullus surmuletus, the species considered in this investigation exhibit limited variations in their spatial distribution. Finally, in the absence of log-books covering the activities of commercial fishing vessels, these findings constitute a base of reference for the analysis of the dynamics of fishing fleets exploiting the demersal resources of the Gulf of Lions. Morphospecies and taxonomic sufficiency of benthic megafauna in scientific bottom trawl surveys Auteur(s) : Brind'Amour, Anik Laffargue, Pascal Morin, Jocelyne Vaz, Sandrine Foveau, Aurelie Le Bris, Herve Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Scientific fisheries surveys routinely identify a large diversity of commercial and non-commercial benthic megainvertebrates that could provide useful information for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptors. Species is obviously the basic taxonomic level to which most ecological studies and theories refer. Identification at this level of organization is indeed always preferred over any other taxonomic level. Nevertheless, aggregation of species to higher taxonomic levels may be unavoidable sometimes, since errors of identification are known or suspected to occur in many surveys. Using analyses of taxonomic sufficiency (identification of organisms at various taxonomic resolutions) and groups of morphospecies (taxa identified easily by non-experts on the basis of evident morphological traits), this study aims to quantify the loss of ecological information incurred by partial identification of benthic megafauna in bottom trawl surveys in order to put such data to good use. The analyses were conducted on five scientific surveys representing a large range of geographical areas (from 150 km2 to 150 000 km2) and environmental conditions. Results show that genus, family and, particularly, morphospecies are good surrogates for species identification in community analyses. We suggest that bottom trawl surveys can provide reliable megafauna data that may usefully complete those obtained by grab surveys. The use of morphospecies could lead to new strategies, combining different datasets to provide indicators for MSFD descriptors (e.g. D6). The multi-component structuration of the species diversity of groundfish assemblages of the east coast of Corsica (Mediterranean Sea): Variation according to the bathymetric strata Auteur(s) : Merigot, B Bertrand, Jacques Gaertner, J Durbec, J Mazouni, N Mante, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The multi-component aspect of species diversity of groundfish assemblages was examined on the basis of a set of experimental trawl surveys conducted on the east coast of Corsica. We analysed and compared the structuration of diversity within three different bathymetric strata: the continental shelf (60-120 m depth), the upper slope (250-400 m) and the lower slope (450-570 m). For each of these three bathymetric strata, we simultaneously analysed 12 indices that are theoretically complementary and relate to 4 diversity components: (1) the number of species, (2) rarity, (3) evenness and (4) taxonomic diversity. Principal component analysis based on Spearman's correlation coefficients was carried out to investigate empirical relationships between the selected indices. Our results showed not only that a single diversity index cannot provide a complete view of the groundfish diversity along the east coast of Corsica, but also that-in some cases-one index cannot even encapsulate a complete description of a specific diversity component. We also found that the nature and the number of independent diversity components slightly varied from one bathymetric stratum to another. The main differences-which mainly occurred in the deepest bathymetric stratum-might be associated with lower density of individuals and lower dominance of some species at deeper depths. Finally, this study is the first dealing with groundfish diversity in this area, which is currently characterized by one of the lowest fishing intensity rates in the northern Mediterranean Sea. It might be considered as a first '' reference state '' with a view to monitoring the spatio-temporal changes in species diversity patterns along the east coast of Corsica in the future. Observations of chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays and chimaeras) in the Bay of Biscay (North-eastern Atlantic) from submersibles. Auteur(s) : Lorance, Pascal Latrouite, Daniel Seret, Bernard Éditeur(s) : SéretB. & J.-Y. Sire, eds Paris: Soc. Fr. lchtyol. & IRD, 2000: 29-45 Résumé : Forty one manned submersible dives were carried out during 2 cruises in the Bay of Biscay covering a range of depth from about 100 to 2100 m. Chondrichthyan species were observed in most of the dives, some of them were easily identified and their behaviour could be studied. Twenty-two chondrichthyan species (9 sharks, 8 rays and 5 chimaeras) were recorded. Shark species were always seen active except Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus melastomus. Some representatives were found motionless on the bottom, sometimes forming groups for the first species. Chimaeras appeared to strongly react to the presence of the submersible. The density of chondrichtyes and their relative frequency in the total fish assemblage were estimated, the results are globally consistent with former knowledge and the differences with results from trawl surveys are discussed. The observations presented here suggest peak of Chimaera monstrosa abundance at upper slope depth (200-500 m) that was not documented formerly for that area. Benefits of swath mapping for the identification of marine habitats in the New Caledonia Economic Zone Auteur(s) : Van De Beuque, Sabrina Auzende, Jean-marie Lafoy, Yves Grandperrin, René Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The ZoNeCo programme is devoted to the evaluation of the marine resources of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The results are essentially dependent on the quality of the seafloor mapping. From 1993 to 1996, four geological and geophysical surveys using the EM12 DUAL multibeam echosounder provided swath-mapping and acoustic imagery data of the seafloor of selected sites on the northern and southern parts of the Norfolk ridge, the Loyalty basin, around the Loyalty islands and in the westernmost part of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The accuracy of these documents shows the morphology of the seafloor in detail and allows rocky substratum to be differentiated from muddy bottom. It allows favorable emplacements of future exploratory fishing surveys to be determined. The benefits of swath mapping are illustrated by the Halipro 2 deep sea trawling cruise (1996) which used the swath mapping data of ZoNeCo 1 cruise (1993) on the southern prolongation of the New Caledonia mainland and Loyalty Islands.
