Résumé : The aim of the joint French-British CYAPORC submersible cruise was the exploration and sampling of the Porcupine and Goban Escarpments. A paleozoic mesozoic sedimentary cover has been evidenced abov ea caledonian or older cristalline basement on the Porcupine scarp. On the Goban scarp, the observed outcrops are mainly lower Cretaceous carbonates overlying paleozoic sandstones
La campagne de plongée franco-britannique CYAPORC avait pour objet l'exploration et l'échantillonnage des escarpements de Porcupine et de Goban. Sur l'escarpement de Porcupine au Nord, on a mis en évidence, au-dessus d'un socle cristallin calédonien ou plus ancien, une couverture sédimentaire paléozoïque puis mésozoïque. Sur l'escarpement de Goban, les affleurements observés sont des séries du Crétacé inférieur reposantsur des niveaux de grès paléozoïques.

The basis of this study is a new bathymetric map of the northeast Atlantic compiled from previously published maps made from conventional echosounder data, plus all Sea Beam data acquired on board the R/V JEAN CHARCOT since 1977. As most of the Sea Beam data have been obtained on the continental margin from Porcupine Seabight to the south of the Iberian Peninsula, a precise picture of the continental slope is given. A statistical analysis of the canyons, based on 750 measurements, reveals that many of the canyons present sharp changes in their direction, indicating a structural control mainly linked to the late Hercynian trends, especially around the Iberian Peninsula. Nevertheless, the paths of canyons may merely reflect recent gravity processes, as in the Porcupine Seabight. Canyons locally follow the directions of listric and associated transecting faults (Permian to Triassic and upper Jurassic to lower Cretaceous), as on the Celtic

Résumé : Relatively little is known of the fauna found on rock substrates in the deep ocean. As a result of the Franco-British deep diving cruise Cyaporc in 1986 using the submersible Cyana we present observations of a highly diverse sponge, cnidarian and echinoderm fauna occurring between 1 800 and 3 000 m on the steep slopes to the west of the Porcupine Bank and Goban Spur. This fauna is dominated. by suspension feeders and appears to show a vertical zonation corresponding to water mass structure. The highest biomass and variety of echinoderms are found between 2 100 and 2 600 m bathed in northward flowing North East Atlantic Deep Water. We present also additional observations of species known from previous sampling programmes but rarely photographed in their natural environment.

Résumé : The deep-sea investigations conducted on board H.M. Ships " Lightning," "Porcupine," and" Shearwater," in the years 1868, 1869, 1870 and 1871, and the subsequent correspondence between the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, the Council of the Royal Society, and Dr. W. B. Carpenter, C.B., F.R.S. , have been referred to in the preceding introductory chapter. The practical outcome of these preliminary expeditions and negotiations was the decision by the Government and the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to equip an Expedition for the examination of the physical and biological conditions of the deep sea throughout the great ocean basins. The proposal to defray the expense of such an Expedition out of the public funds received the cordial assent of the House of Commons in April 1872. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
