A steel pan instrustment maker, is looking at the surface markings on a steel pan instrument. These markings will be used as outlines to divide the pan’s surface into convex sections to make its range of sound. Each section will be pounded into shape with a hammer. This particular steel pan is made from a used steel oil drum. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. Steel pan music, which evolved from African drum music, originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century and is often a featured instrument during Carnival. As one of the national emblems of Trinidad and Tobago, steel pans were traditionally made from used steel oil drums or steel containers. The container’s head is concave and the playing surface is divided into convex sections by slants to make the pan's range of sounds. In this image are used steel oil drums, some steel pans with the Shell Oil Company logo and the word "Invaders," painted white metal steel pan stands, and breadfruit trees. One poster is advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra. Other signs includes phrases such as: "We are the greatest" and "Notice there is to be no unnecessary coasting in the yard." In the background is a woman standing on top of a concrete building's roof with laudry and men standing near the wall. Slide labeled Trin. 16.

In the yard are other used steel oil drums, white metal steel pan stands, and many breadfruit trees. In the background are buildings, some made of wood with zinc paneled roofs. There is also a poster advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra, a steel band active during the 1960s and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Some of the notices in the yard read as follows: "Notice don't sit stand lean or prop on the stands," "We are the greatest," "Notice absolutely no unnecessary coasting in the yard." Elle s'est accompagnée de lois et d'évaluations qui ont pour but d'optimiser les politiques locales. La contractualisation est ainsi un instrument juridique qui a toute sa place dans les projets de développements locaux. Seulement elle n'est pas qu'un partenariat mais d'avantage un rapport de fore, un assujettissement des collectivités locales à l'État. En effet, les intérêts entre les collectivités locales et l'état ne sont pas forcément convergents.

Description : Le forum, instrument de communication écrite et collective, asynchrone et à distance fait partie de l'environnement numérique des étudiants avec une visée pédagogique lors des enseignements, mais aussi informative dans les relations avec l'administration. Outil de liaison dans l'éco-système numérique de l'étudiant, il participe de fait à la transmission d'informations académiques de la part de l'institution même en concurrence avec d'autres outils (Web, réseaux sociaux). Cette communication, présentée par Chantal Charnet, professeur de l'Université Montpellier 3, a pour objectif de dégager le cadre d'usage de cette transmission, les pratiques développées par les usagers concernés, les services administratifs et les étudiants-eux-mêmes et les détournements discursifs opérés. Elle s'attachera à analyser comment l'information se structure et se construit par le biais des différentes interventions et en quoi l'usage des réseaux sociaux détourne en fait l'échange institutionnel mis en place par des forums.

Description : Plant genetic resources are instrumental in the adaptation of agriculture to social and environmental change. They are the backbone of research and breeding programs aimed at the development and transfer of new crop varieties best suited to consumers? needs and tastes and to new farming systems. To this aim, plant germplasm collections have been constituted worldwide. Securing such collections requires substantial human and financial investments that can prove difficult to maintain on the long run for small countries and territories such as most Caribbean countries. In Guadeloupe and Martinique, INRA and CIRAD have constituted large plant germplasm collections of tropical crops over several decades. They joined forces in 2010 to create the Tropical Plant Biological Resource Center of the French West Indies (CRB-PT), which is affiliated to both institutions. In this paper, we describe CRB-PT?s collections, services provided to end users and research programs as well as scientific and technical networking strategy. Les ressources génétiques d'usine sont instrumentales dans l'adaptation de l'agriculture au changement social et environnemental. Elles sont l'épine dorsale de la recherche et les programmes d'élevage ont visé le développement et le transfert de nouvelles variétés de culture adaptées aux besoins et aux goûts des consommateurs et à de nouveaux systèmes d'exploitation agricole. À ce but, des collections de matériel génétique d'usine ont été constituées dans le monde entier. La fixation de telles collections exige les investissements humains et substantiels qui peuvent être difficile à maintenir sur le long terme pour de petits pays et territoires tels que la plupart des pays des Caraïbes. En Guadeloupe et Martinique, l'AICN et les CIRAD ont constitué de grandes collections de matériel génétique d'usine de cultures tropicales au-delà de plusieurs décennies. Ils ont joint des forces en 2010 pour créer le centre de ressources biologique de plante tropicale des Antilles françaises (CRB-PT), qui sont affiliées aux deux établissements. En ce document, nous décrivons les collections de CRB-PT, services fournis aux utilisateurs et les programmes de recherche aussi bien que la stratégie scientifique et technique de mise en réseau.

Description : Acknowledging the contribution of agriculture to global changes and its negative impacts on the environment, it is now seen as unavoidable for it to participate to the ecological transition. This research aims to understand the performativity of legal texts. This performativity does not only reveal the institutions? approach of the model to implement. It also aims to change, in the meantime, the reality (Ambroise et al., 2015). The objective of this research is to stress the importance of concepts? definitions in policies implementation when agricultural system reframing is at stake, and to highlight an uncertain use of words may produce. However, little attention is given to the choice of terms concerning the definition of a greener agriculture in official texts: terms are often mixed up without any clarification. Applying content analysis to official documents, we provide an analytical grid to grasp in what extent the unclear use of words and what they namely designate, lead to ambiguous policies eluding aspects of the concept of agroecology underlined by researchers or associations. We also shed light on the local appropriation process of the concept and its specification in the French Indies. Reconnaissant la contribution de l'agriculture aux changements globaux et à ses impacts négatifs sur l'environnement, on le voit maintenant comme inévitable pour qu'il participe à la transition écologique. Objectifs de ces recherches pour comprendre le performativity des textes juridiques. Ce performativity indique non seulement l'approche des établissements du modèle à l'instrument. Il vise également à changer, dans le même temps, la réalité (Ambroise et autres, 2015). L'objectif de cette recherche est de souligner l'importance des définitions des concepts dans l'exécution de politiques quand le système agricole reframing est en jeu, et accentuer une utilisation incertaine des mots peut produire. Cependant, peu d'attention est accordée au choix des termes au sujet de la définition d'une agriculture plus verte en textes officiels : des termes sont souvent mélangés sans n'importe quelle clarification. S'appliquant à l'analyse du contenu aux documents officiels, nous fournissons une grille analytique à la prise dans quelle ampleur l'utilisation peu claire des mots et ce qu'ils à savoir indiquent, mènent aux politiques ambiguës éludant des aspects du concept de l'agroécologie souligné par des chercheurs ou des associations. Nous avons également jeté la lumière sur le processus local d'appropriation du concept et de ses spécifications dans les Antilles françaises.

Description : Breeding new interspecific banana hybrid varieties with pests and disease resistance characters is instrumental for the development of pesticide-free agroecological banana farming systems. Such breeding relies on the combined use of Musa acuminata and M. balbisiana parents. Unfortunately, infectious alleles of endogenous Banana streak virus (eBSV) sequences are present in the genome of M. balbisiana genitors. Upon activation by biotic and abiotic stresses, these infectious eBSVs lead to spontaneous infections by several species of Banana streak virus (BSV) in interspecific hybrids harbouring both M. acuminata and M. balbisiana genomes. In this work, we show that M. balbisiana diploid genitors available for breeding host at least one infectious eBSV. We also show how we segregated infectious and non-infectious eBSV alleles in seedy M. balbisiana diploids through self- pollination or chromosome doubling of haploid lines. We report on the successful breeding of M. balbisiana diploid genitors devoid of all infectious eBSV alleles following self-pollination and on the potential of breeding additional M. balbisiana diploid genitors free of infectious eBSVs by crossing parents displaying complementary eBSV patterns. This work paves the way to the safe use of M. balbisiana genitors for breeding banana interspecific hybrid varieties with no risk of activation of infectious eBSVs.

Description : The Chemical Purification, analysis and Screening core laboratories (CPAS) are located at the University of South Florida campus in Tampa. This core offers instrumentation and expertise in fractionation, purification, and various chemical analyses to support synthetic and natural products drug discovery research groups. Our main equipment are dedicated to chromatographic separation and purification (MPLC, HPLC) and mass-spectrometry for analytic detection, quantification and identification (LC-MS SQ, QqQ and QToF). The CPAS services also include Circular Dichroism spectrometry, general spectroscopic characterization (UV, FTIR), lyophilization (bench top and high capacity freeze-dryers), synthesis (microwave reactor), ADME screening (permeability and drug solubility testing), and high-throughput screening development capability (automated liquid handler and multimode plate reader). An example of three significant studies will be presented at the conference to illustrate the CPAS core facility services: 1) Identification of new bioactive compounds from mangrove endophytic fungi as potential alternatives to malaria drug resistance, 2) Myricanol isolated from Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) and its synthetic derivatives targeting the microtubuleassociated protein tau accumulation in the Alzheimer's disease and 3) New ent-labdane diterpenes with solid tumor cell lines antiproliferative properties from the endemic plant Eupatorium obtusissmum from the island of Hispaniola. The core provides research lab training workshops in advanced technology and assistance so users can operate any instruments available in the laboratories to successfully accomplish their analyses and research projects.
