Résumé : Hugh C. Macfarlane, an immigrant from Scotland, purchased land in November 1886 and built a cigar factory that started production on .June 15, 1892. Macfarlane and other developers offered free land and buildings, bringing in more cigar factories and growth that led to the formation of the City of West Tampa on May 18, 1895. Other immigrants from Cuba, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and different parts of the United States made up the population, giving the town its distinctive, vibrant character. After thirty years as a prospering municipality West Tampa was annexed to the City of Tampa on January 1, 1925.

On the right can be seen Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, known as “the Kirk” which is Scottish word for church. In 1810 the foundation stone was laid with the help of Scottish Loyalist Michael Malcolm and fellow members of the Saint Andrew's Society of the Bahamas to reflect the traditions of the Church of Scotland. The building was added to over the years. The nave, portico, and bell tower were added in 1864. It is the second oldest church building on New Providence. In 2010, the Kirk became affiliated with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Slide labeled Bryant Nassau Mar .'46.

Résumé : We have applied transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses coupled with viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) numerical modelling to identify the active slip systems and to better understand the crystal preferred orientation (CPO) development of the Torridon quartz mylonite (NW Scotland). TEM analyses showed evidence of activation of 1/3〈a〉{π′}, 1/3〈a〉{z} and possible 〈a〉(c) slip systems, as well as dislocation climb and dynamic recrystallization. All the CPOs generated by VPSC models share common characteristics with the Torridon quartz mylonite, but only Models 2 and 3 reproduce the [c]-axes maxima at low angle (<20°) to the foliation pole along the YZ plane, as observed in the mylonite. In Model 2, this concentration only occurs at γ≥2.6, whereas in Model 3 this maxima occurs at lower shear strains. The models that start with a previous preferred orientation acquire very strong CPOs after small-imposed strains, followed by the rapid rotation of the fabric in relation to the new imposed finite strain axes. The combined activation of 〈a〉{π′}, 〈a〉{z} and possibly 〈a〉(c) slip systems, as demonstrated by TEM analyses, suggests that the VPSC model that best predicts CPO development in the Torridon quartz mylonite is Model 2, where the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of 〈a〉{π/π′} is assumed to be slightly stronger than 〈a〉(c).

Résumé : The Great Glen Fault (GGF) is a major lithospheric strike-slip fault system that cuts across the Caledonian orogenic belt of Scotland. It separates the Northern Highlands terrane from the Grampian terrane. Movement history along the fault extends at least into the Early Palaeozoic. The low-temperature history of the Scottish Highlands covers a significant period from the Late Palaeozoic to the Present, but the magnitude of vertical movements that affected the GGF area during that time is still a matter of debate. Fission track analysis on detailed vertical profiles in the Ballachulish and Strontian complexes, as well as on a profile oriented northeastwards across the GGF, reveals distributed differential vertical movements along the fault during the Late Palaeozoic. The Mesozoic denudation is estimated at a maximum of 2 km before a more recent widespread exhumation event that started at around 40–25 Ma, leading to 1.6 to 2 km of erosion. Mount Hillaby, whose peak located in Scotland District of the Saint Andrew’s parish, is the highest elevation in Barbados at 340 meters (1115 feet) above sea level. Mount Hillaby, whose soil is composed of sandstone and chalk, is the summit of a mountain range that stretches from Trinidad to Puerto Rico. The Scotland District is the only location in the Caribbean where this mountain range is above water. This range is an example of an accretionary prism which is formed from sediments on the ocean floor pushing together at the junction of two tectonic plates. From Mount Hillaby’s peak viewers can see the beaches of Bathsheba and Chalky Mount, a range of hills with a jagged profile that contains clay deposits used by local potters. Slide labeled Barb 23.

In a period of agricultural decline in the uplands of Europe, agriculture is ceasing to provide the primary rationale for the organisation, utilisation and functioning of rural space. Policy reform, market trends and changes to the way citizens and consumers think about the countryside all suggest a need for thinking strategically about the future development of these areas. However, without a broad involvement of stakeholders, land use conflicts, and social and cultural conflicts in general, may increase. Involving stakeholders in upland areas can be facilitated by using scenario technique and by discussing alternative futures in local stakeholder panels. In this paper we present four scenarios of land-use change for the year 2030, and their assessments by stakeholder panels in Scotland, France, Norway, Switzerland, Slovakia and Greece. The aim of the paper is to explore the ways in which stakeholders in these locations advocate and assess these scenarios. We also explore how stakeholders in different countries weight the visual landscape impacts, the livelihood and biodiversity aspects of the scenarios in their assessment, and the reasons for their prioritising. The cross-country analysis shows that stakeholders across the study areas are united in their overall rejection of agricultural liberalisation, advocating a production-oriented, but multifunctional and environmentally-friendly agriculture that maintains landscapes and biodiversity.

Résumé : Xenoliths from Hawk's Nib (Bute, SW Scotland), entrained in alkali basalt of late Carboniferous–early Permian age, generally possess unrecrystallized igneous cumulate textures. Most are inferred to derive from lower crustal (20–30 km) depths, with a small minority from the underlying restitic mantle. Compositions range from ultramafic cumulates (dunite, wehrlite, websterite, clinopyroxenite) to gabbros and anorthosites. The suite is unique in being dominated by poikilitic wehrlites and olivine clinopyroxenites. Major element variation in the cumulates is controlled by modal mineral variations. The ultramafic cumulates all have high REE contents and light REE (LREE)-enriched patterns, with websterites being the least enriched. Gabbroic xenoliths have uniform patterns in which both LREE and heavy REE are depleted relative to the middle REE, with small positive Eu anomalies. Present-day Sr–Nd isotopic data for the suite are the most depleted among Scottish xenoliths. The xenoliths are inferred to be products of young replenishments of the lower crust by basaltic magmas during continental underplating. Orthopyroxene-bearing lithologies crystallized from tholeiitic magmas whereas alkali basalts formed the clinopyroxene-rich samples; both parental magma-types were derived from similar mantle sources.

The mylonitic Cambrian quartzites, Moine Thrust Zone, NW Scotland, have long been used to study microstructural and petrofabric evolution and to develop understanding of grain-scale processes accommodating large-scale displacements. Today, structural geology is entering a new age of understanding of the basic processes involved in microstructural evolution due to the emergence of novel instrumental techniques and theoretical models. It seems apposite therefore to re-evaluate the microstructure of one example of this classic quartz mylonite from the Stack of Glencoul, Assynt, using arguably the most important of these new techniques, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The three-dimensional (3D) microstructure and petrofabric of this rock was analysed using EBSD, to: 1) corroborate previous optical and X-ray texture goniometry measurements; 2) investigate the potential for sampling and/or tectonic sectioning bias that may be introduced inadvertently into any petrofabric analysis; and 3) predict its seismic properties. It is found that microstructures do differ between orthogonal structural sections, leading to variations in strengths of different components in the overall petrofabric that might impact on seismic properties. The results emphasize the true 3D nature of microstructures and petrofabrics, which can be recognized and accommodated more readily by this new generation of analytical techniques.
