Étude préparatoire a une reconquête des niveaux de ressource en langouste royale (Palinurus elephas) en mer d'Iroise Auteur(s) : Latrouite, Daniel Lazure, Pascal Résumé : The study conducted in the framework of an agreement between Ifremer and the Local fisheries committee at Audierne is part of a project to restore spiny lobster Palinurus elephas stock levels in the Iroise Sea. It is supported by professional fishermen from Finistère and by the Regional fisheries committee of Brittany.
After a brief review of the way lobster stocks are managed worldwide, followed by the major biological and ecological features of red lobster and the state of fisheries in Europe and North Africa, the very poor state of the resource along French coast is borne out by the statistics of landings.
Various scenarios (not alternatives) to promote the rebuilding of the biomass are suggested: minimum landing size increase, seasonal closure of the fishery, berried females protection, no fishing zones.
The drift of phyllosoma larvae during their long larval stage is addressed using a 3-D hydrodynamic simulation model.
Campagnes 2011 Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Jacques Dromer, Clement Reynal, Lionel Résumé : Spiny lobsters are an important component of the coastal fisheries around the Martinique island. This study aimed to assess the contamination by kepone of the two main species Panulirus argus and P. guttatus in the main fishery area laying along the eastern coast of Martinique. The objectives of the study were to describe the distribution of the spiny lobster contamination in the area, to explore possible relationships with some biological parameters such as individual size, sex and colour of tegument, as well as characterize difference of kepone concentration between the muscle and soft flesh of the head, in view of helping the definition of further fishery management measures. The analyses were done from chemical analyses of 125 samples of spiny lobsters gathered from 2008 to 2010 all around the island, and from a specific set of 200 new observations from a specific survey carried out in 2011 in the study area.
For both species, the results show a diffusion of the contamination all over the coral shoals, close to contaminated catchment basins, with a strong decrease just outside these areas. For the Caribbean spiny lobster, a strong relationship between kepone concentration and individual size was identified, and less for the Spotted spiny lobster. For the two species, the concentration of kepone found in soft flesh of the head was more than twice as in the muscle. Finally, the difference of contamination between the two species appeared strongly linked with their biology. La pecherie de langouste rouge en Corse Auteur(s) : Marin, Jean Résumé : The european red spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. The fishery is described fleet, fishing areas, fishing strategy and fishing gear ; fishing effort, yield, c.p.u.e, and complementary.catches ; resource condition. Its specific problem, the economic overfishing, is analysed. Finally, it has been tried to assess the fishing regulation impact (minimum market size, fishing seasonal close, fishing sanctuaries). Mapping habitats in a marine reserve showed how a 30-year trophic cascade altered ecosystem structure Auteur(s) : Leleu, Kevin Remy-zephir, Brice Grace, Roger Costello, Mark J. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Time-series studies have reported trophic cascades in land, freshwater and marine environments in many geographic areas. However, the spatial extent of habitats, a key metric of ecosystem structure, has not been mapped in these studies. Marine reserves can provide experimental, before-after and inside-outside (control-impacted), situations for assessing the impact of fishing on ecosystems. We mapped seabed habitats and their associated communities (biotopes) in New Zealand's oldest marine reserve for comparison with pre-reserve maps created about 30 years previously. Areas grazed bare by sea urchins were entirely replaced in the centre of the reserve by kelp, or alga turf, an intermediate biotope between heavily grazed encrusting algae and lightly grazed kelp. Urchins declined following increased abundance and body size of spiny (rock) lobsters and fish (especially snapper) in the reserve but maintained bare rock outside. While this gradient in habitat change matched the gradient of predator abundance, it also matched the extent of reef habitat area. Thus the trophic cascade may be influenced by the effect of habitat on the abundance and behavioural interactions of urchins and their predators. Further ecosystem changes may arise should the abundance of mega-predators, such as seals, cetaceans and large sharks, increase in the region; if parasites become pathogenic; and/or when invasive species reach the reserve. No-take marine reserves provide real-world experiments that show the importance of species in food webs, and the consequences of fishing for ecosystems. Because these changes in ecosystem structure may continue, and will vary with environment, climate and species distributions, reserves need to be permanent and replicated geographically. Habitat maps should be produced for all reserves to enable ecological changes in the ecosystem to be spatially quantified. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
