Description : Lorsqu'en 1989, les écrivains martiniquais Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau et Raphaël Confiant publient Éloge de la créolité et dessinent un nouvel horizon culturel pour la Caraïbe francophone, créolité, communauté, mondialité et créativité s'agrègent et suggèrent un modèle identitaire pour le monde contemporain. Jean Bernabé, linguiste, écrivain et pédagogue de renommée internationale, engage le texte postcolonial dans une démarche commune, véhiculant un questionnement d'ordre éthique laissant transparaître l'évolution des idéologies. S'il est vrai qu'Eloge de la créolité contient un capital symbolique qui semble inviter à une réflexion sur les concepts d'hominisation, de créolisation et de mondialisation et définit des perspectives suivant lesquelles « le partage des ancêtres » influe sur les relations, c'est l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de Jean Bernabé qui produit un « effet-manifeste » ayant pour fin d'inaugurer, légitimer et défendre un projet esthétique. La mosaïque définie par le créoliste insuffle une migration des imaginaires. Il s'agit dès lors d'interroger la pensée de cet intellectuel engagé dans l'analyse de l'usage de la langue mais ne s'alliant pas de manière effective à la révolution copernicienne initiée en 2007 par 44 voix marginales, contestataires et offensives, signataires du Manifeste pour une littérature-monde en français. A l'aune d'une étude de l'oeuvre du théoricien fondal-natal, la littérature-monde inviterait-elle à bousculer à nouveau les symbolismes et représentations que dépoussiérait jadis la créolité ?

The construction of the House of Assembly in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine was completed by 1762. This red-brick, two-story building was the official meeting place for the Jamaican government until 1872, when Kingston took became the capital of Jamaica. As of 2013, the structure has been used as the offices for the Saint Catherine Parish Council. On August 1, 1838 Jamaica marked the day all slaves were made free. In Celebration of Emancipation, the Proclamation of Freedom was read aloud by Governor Sir Lionel Smith from the steps of King's House to the assembled masses in the square of Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica. Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in 1893. In the foreground of the image is Emancipation Square, a small park bordered by a shrub with variegated leaves and surrounded by a wrought iron gate. The interior of the park has been planted with palm trees, has benches, a flag pole, and a small fountain. Slide labeled Jam. at Spanish Town.

A view of the wake of a boat and other boats off the coast of Bimini, Bahamas. Bimini, the closest Bahamian island to the United States, is made up of two main islands, North Bimini and South Bimini, and several cays. Flowing north of Bimini is the Gulf Stream, a northward-flowing ocean current in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Bimini has been nicknamed “Sport Fishing Capital of the World.” The Bimini coat of arms features a marlin with a fishing line in its mouth. Slide labeled Bryant Gulf Stream at Bimini Mar. '46.

A Ford Cortina automobile driving on a dirt road towards the Maima-Seville Heritage Park, Jamaica. Christopher Columbus spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. In 1509, Diego Columbus, Christopher Columbus's son and Governor of the Indies, appointed Juan de Esquivel Lieutenant in Jamaica. Upon his arrival, de Esquivel established the first European settlement and first capital in Jamaica called Sevilla la Nueva, now known as Seville. Slide labeled Jam. Seville near where Col. landed.

Résumé : The literature has identified a set of factors explaining the accumulation of capital. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of cultural beliefs. This paper, based on economic science, uses data collected from 207 haitian formal sector firms to develop and test a model of capital accumulation integrating socio-cultural traits, including life in the present moment, fatalism, primacy of the hereafter and mutual assistance. The results reveal that the primacy of the beyond, life in the present moment and mutual aid have negative and significant impacts on accumulation of capital. And, fatalism has positive and significant effects on this variable.
La littérature a identifié un ensemble de facteurs expliquant l'accumulation du capital. Cependant, les travaux ne se sont que très peu intéressés à l'impact des croyances culturelles. Ce papier, relevant de la science économique, utilise des données collectées auprès de 207 entreprises du secteur formel haïtien pour élaborer et tester un modèle d'accumulation du capital intégrant des traits socioculturels, notamment la vie dans l'instant présent, le fatalisme, la primauté de l'au-delà et l'entraide mutuelle. Les résultats révèlent que la primauté de l'au-delà, la vie dans l'instant présent et l'entraide mutuelle ont des impacts négatifs et significatifs sur l'accumulation du capital. En revanche, le fatalisme a des effets positifs et significatifs sur cette variable. Mots clés. Accumulation du capital, croyances, traits socioculturels.

This paper was part of the panel Panama Silver and the Making of Modern Literature, which introduced a collaborative, digital humanities course entitled “Panama Silver, Asian Gold: Migration, Money, and the Making of Modern Caribbean Literature,” and illuminated the significance of West Indians in Panama for the formation of Caribbean literature. The panelists designed and taught the course at Amherst College, the University of Florida, and the University of Miami. In the first paper in this panel, Rhonda Cobham-Sander articulated the overarching goal of the course; namely, that these two, closely related migrations were critical to the development of the Caribbean middle class, political nationalism, and national literatures. In the second paper, Leah Rosenberg outlined primary historical and literary sources on West Indians in Panama now available in the Digital Library of the Caribbean (www.dloc.com) and discussed how this supports collaboration in teaching and research. In the third paper, Margarita Vargas-Betancourt discussed the challenges of finding archival materials concerning West Indians in Panama in, U.S.-oriented archives (which we are using in the course). In the final paper, Donette Francis demonstrated the implications of positioning Panama Silver, the capital accumulated by West Indians, as critical to shaping modern Caribbean literature by reexamining Salkey’s understudied 1971 novel, The Late Emancipation of Jerry Stover.
