The construction of the House of Assembly in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine was completed by 1762. This red-brick, two-story building was the official meeting place for the Jamaican government until 1872, when Kingston took became the capital of Jamaica. As of 2013, the structure has been used as the offices for the Saint Catherine Parish Council. On August 1, 1838 Jamaica marked the day all slaves were made free. In Celebration of Emancipation, the Proclamation of Freedom was read aloud by Governor Sir Lionel Smith from the steps of King's House to the assembled masses in the square of Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica. Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in 1893. In the foreground of the image is Emancipation Square, a small park bordered by a shrub with variegated leaves and surrounded by a wrought iron gate. The interior of the park has been planted with palm trees, has benches, a flag pole, and a small fountain. Slide labeled Jam. at Spanish Town.

Christopher Columbus spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. In 1509, Diego Columbus, Christopher Columbus's son and Governor of the Indies, appointed Juan de Esquivel Lieutenant in Jamaica. Upon his arrival, de Esquivel established the first European settlement and first capital in Jamaica called Sevilla la Nueva, now known as Seville. Slide labeled Jam. Seville near where Col. landed.

This paper was part of the panel Panama Silver and the Making of Modern Literature, which introduced a collaborative, digital humanities course entitled “Panama Silver, Asian Gold: Migration, Money, and the Making of Modern Caribbean Literature,” and illuminated the significance of West Indians in Panama for the formation of Caribbean literature. The panelists designed and taught the course at Amherst College, the University of Florida, and the University of Miami. In the first paper in this panel, Rhonda Cobham-Sander articulated the overarching goal of the course; namely, that these two, closely related migrations were critical to the development of the Caribbean middle class, political nationalism, and national literatures. In the second paper, Leah Rosenberg outlined primary historical and literary sources on West Indians in Panama now available in the Digital Library of the Caribbean (www.dloc.com) and discussed how this supports collaboration in teaching and research. In the third paper, Margarita Vargas-Betancourt discussed the challenges of finding archival materials concerning West Indians in Panama in, U.S.-oriented archives (which we are using in the course). In the final paper, Donette Francis demonstrated the implications of positioning Panama Silver, the capital accumulated by West Indians, as critical to shaping modern Caribbean literature by reexamining Salkey’s understudied 1971 novel, The Late Emancipation of Jerry Stover.

Résumé : Julius B. Annis was born June 4, 1890 in Luvno, Hungary. At present there is nothing known of his parentage, or when he emigrated to the United States. It is known that he registered for the draft during World War One and at that time he was residing at Brooklyn, New York. He married Minnie Brosow before 1917 and had at least one child, Morton Lawrence Annis Sr. It is evident that Julius became affiliated with one of the larger and well known cigar companies, "Sanchez and Haya" in New York City. A brief history of this cigar company and it's founders is in order, so that the evolution of the company can be seen in regards to "J. B. Annis". "Fact & Fancy About Cigars and Tobacco", by Morton L. Annis Sr. (1967) In 1867, Senors Ignacio Haya and Serfino Sanchez, natives of Spain came to New York City with $1000.00 in capital and started what was to become one of the most successful cigar manufacturies in the world. In 1886 they moved their operations to Tampa, Florida and they received the U.S. Revenue designation of "Factory No. 1". Tampa soon became the cigar manufacturing industry giant and Sanchez & Haya retained it's leadership roll. The company ultimately acquired and merged with many of the old-line Tampa producers, such as Morgan Cigar Co., Schwab-Davis y Cia. and many more. By 1892, both Senor Haya and Sanchez were leaders of the Spanish community and their financial ability, philanthropy, and industry were legendary. J. B. (Bunny) Annis began as a "drummer", or cigar salesman, who traveled from coast to coast selling his wares to Tobacconist and cigar merchants. "Dapper, loquacious, true bon vivants of the era .. perhaps the original American Salesman." Julius Annis, was at this time a guiding spirit and became partners in what is now known as Gradiaz, Annis or "Gradiaz y Annis", and was the Dean of these legendary "Knights of the Panetela." In 1963 Gradiaz Annis became a Division of General Cigar Co., Inc. Julius Benjamin Annis died the following year (June 1964) in Tampa. His son, Morton Lawrence Annis Sr. (1917-1979), President of Gradiaz, Annis, wrote about his father in 1967: "My father had a basic compelling motivation for excellence of product which was, in truth, his religion and his way of life. His love for tobacco and fine cigars was sacrosanct and so traditional in concept that he vigorously opposed all modern technological advances, preferring to create cigars in the great classic style of his youth." Gradiaz, Annis is still known world wide as "World Leader in Luxury Cigars".

Résumé : Au Belize, le projet de construction d’une nouvelle capitale apparait au début des années 1960, juste après la tragédie de l’ouragan Hattie (octobre 1961) qui a détruit une grande partie de la capitale coloniale, Belize City. Belmopan, située au centre géographique du Belize, devait être le nouveau visage moderne du pays, le symbole d’une jeune nation sur le chemin de son indépendance (1981), la garantie d’une société mieux intégrée en termes territoriaux et de population, le fer de lance du développement économique du pays. Néanmoins, depuis sa naissance, la ville peine à se développer et se peupler et Belize City, sur la côte Caraïbe, continue à jouer le rôle de capitale non officielle du pays. L’histoire de Belmopan, de sa planification initiale à sa croissance actuelle, me permettra d’interroger la difficile émergence d’une nation indépendante, dont le double ancrage caribéen et centre-américain se superpose à une ethnicisation de la société.
In Belize, the project to build of a new capital appeared at the beginning of the 1960s, just after the tragedy of hurricane Hattie (October 1961), which destroyed a large part of the colonial capital, Belize City. Belmopan, located at the geographical center of Belize, should become the new modern face of the country, the symbol of a young nation on its way to independence (1981), the guarantee of a better territorial and demographic integrated society, the spearhead of the economic development of the country. Nevertheless, since its birth, the city has failed to expand and Belize City, on the Caribbean coast, is still the non-official capital of the country. The history of Belmopan, from its initial planning to its current growth, will give me the opportunity to question the difficult emergence of an independent nation, whose double Caribbean and Central-American belonging produces the ethnicization of the society.

This Anglican Cathedral is part of the Diocese of the North East Caribbean and Aruba. Picture was taken from Prado Street. El Capitolio, or National Capital Building was built between April 1, 1926 and May 20, 1929. Many of the best Cuban architects joined forces on the project.
In 1925, Gerardo Machado was elected president. Soon afterward under the mandate of the legislature he commissioned a new design from the Cuban architects Raul Otero and Eugenio Raynieri. The previous, partially completed building was demolished and work began on the new building on 1 April 1926. Construction was overseen by the U.S. firm of Purdy and Henderson.

With the constitution of the colonial empire, at the end of the nineteenth century, Bordeaux, whose the traded tradition was already well established dreams of becoming the “colonial capital city of France” in competition with the cities of Paris, Marseille and Lyon. Faced with the ignorance of French people on these countries and on these peoples with the strange and primitive customs, the Elite from Bordeaux tried to promote the products coming from colonies and, at the same time, to spread the idea and the taste of colonial cultures. The commercial, industrial and artistic exhibitions will prove to be a festive, theatrical and didactic mean of popularization. Bordeaux, pioneer city, will organize more than forty exhibitions and the colonial fairs at the Quinconces place between 1850 and 1940. The Philomathic Society of Bordeaux will set up the most prestigious ones, in 1895 and 1907. Staged in real colonial palace, Bordeaux sold “colonial dream”. With these private colonial pavilions, Bordeaux will be crowned, in 1923, first colonial fair of France. In these same educational and paternalistic spirit, Bordeaux will open five museum rooms for the French colonies. During several decades, Bordeaux will proudly affirm its colonial identity though its cultural demonstrations and the dynamism of its port activities.
Avec la constitution de l'empire colonial, à la fin du XIXe siècle, Bordeaux, dont la tradition commerçante était déjà bien établie, rêve de devenir la « capitale coloniale de la France » en concurrence avec les villes de Paris, Marseille et Lyon. Face à la méconnaissance des Français sur ces pays et ces peuples aux « moeurs curieuses et sauvages », les élites bordelaises cherchèrent à promouvoir les produits en provenance des colonies et, en même temps, à diffuser l'idée et le goût des cultures coloniales. Les expositions commerciales, industrielles et artistiques se révéleront comme un moyen festif, théâtral et didactique de vulgarisation populaire. Bordeaux, ville pionnière, organisera plus d'une quarantaine d'expositions et de foires coloniales sur les Quinconces entre 1850 et 1940. Les plus prestigieuses seront celles organisées par la Société Philomathique de Bordeaux, en 1895 et 1907. Mis en scènes dans de véritables palais coloniaux, Bordeaux vend du « rêve colonial ». Avec ses pavillons coloniaux particuliers, Bordeaux sera consacré, en 1923, première « foire coloniale de France ». Dans ce même esprit pédagogique et paternaliste, Bordeaux ouvrira cinq salles de musées aux colonies françaises. Pendant plusieurs décennies, Bordeaux affirmera fièrement son identité coloniale à travers ses manifestations culturelles et le dynamisme de ses activités portuaires. L'élan colonisateur ne s'est pas arrêté à une simple propagande politique et mercantile : ce fut avant tout la mobilisation d'énergies humaines qui, dans la passion de l'histoire en marche, ont mis en scène leurs convictions à travers d'ambitieuses démonstrations. Aujourd'hui, les fonds artistiques et ethnographiques des musées bordelais et l'abondance des collections privées témoignent aussi d'un véritable goût pour l'ailleurs et pour la différence. Pour le meilleur comme pour le pire, la richesse incontestable des faits historiques révèle que l'histoire des outre-mers a toujours été liée à la ville de Bordeaux.

Résumé : This thesis aims to analyze the active tectonics and the seismic hazard for three main cities of NW Iran (Tehran, Tabriz and Zandjan) using morphotectonics and paleoseismology. Within the Tehran capital, we focused our analysis on the Mosha-North Tehran (M-NT) active fault system. Our investigations show that this fault system is mainly dominated by left-lateral faulting. Along the eastern part of the M-NT fault system, we found evidences of at least seven strong (M>7) paleoearthquakes during the past 10 ka (recurrence interval : 1100-1400 yrs). Our study along the central portion of the fault system (in Abali region) suggests that it corresponds probably to the source of the 1830 AD historical earthquake (M=7.1, Io= IX). Within Tabriz region, we studied the SE segment of the North Tabriz fault. We found evidences of at least three strong events, which occurred during the past 33.5 ka. The North Tabriz dextral fault corresponds to the central portion of a fault system (TFS), and contains two fault segments (NW and SE). Our paleoseismological analysis shows a variation of the slip rate, which decreases from NW to SE along the strike-slip fault. The western (Mishu) and eastern (Bozghush) terminations of the fault system correspond to oblique-compression zones. TFS belongs to the eastern portion of a regional fault system (GSKT), linking the active extension within the central part of the collision and the active compression to the East. Finally, we focus on the Zandjan area, where no important historical seismicitiy is recorded. There, based on morphotectonics analysis we discovered a large active fault network, whose southeastern part affects the Zandjan city. To conclude this work, we replace our observations within the general geodynamic framework of the Arabia- Eurasia collision. One of the striking pictures is the occurrence of opposite kinematics along the M-NT (and other range parallel faults within the south Central Alborz) and the North Tabriz fault systems that have the same trend. This shows the rapid variation of the regional stress field in the Northern Iran.
L'objectif de ce mémoire de thèse est l'étude de la tectonique récente et l'évaluation de l'aléa sismique pour trois villes importante, Téhéran, Tabriz et Zandjan, situées dans le nord-ouest de l'Iran. Dans la capitale de l'Iran, Téhéran, nous nous sommes concentrés sur le système de faille active de Mosha-Nord Téhéran. Nos travaux démontrent que ce système est essentiellement décrochant sénestre. Nos analyses paléosismologiques sur la portion est de ce système (dans la vallée de Tar) montrent au minimum les évidences de sept grands événements sismiques (M>7) pendant les derniers 10000 ans (l'intervalle de récurrence est de 1100 à 1400 ans). Les études que nous avons mené dans la partie centrale de ce système (région d'Abali) révèlent qu'il pourrait être la source du dernier événement sismique ayant affecté la ville de Téhéran en 1830 AD. Dans la région de Tabriz, nous nous sommes intéressés au segment SE de la faille décrochante dextre de Nord Tabriz où nous avons trouvé les évidences de trois grands séismes pendant les derniers 33500 ans. Nos études montrent que la faille Nord Tabriz qui est la portion centrale d'un système de faille (TFS) est constituée par deux segments NW et SE dextres. Notre étude paléosismologique suggère une variation de la vitesse qui diminue du NW vers SE le long de ces segments. Les extrémités ouest (Mishu) et est (Bozghush) de ce système correspondent à des zones compressives qui absorbent les déplacements horizontaux sur les segments NW et SE. D'un point de vue général la TFS est une partie d'un système de failles régionales (GSKT) qui relie une zone d'extension active dans la partie centrale de la collision Arabie-Eurasie et une zone de compression active à l'Est. Enfin, à Zandjan qui est une ville située dans une région de lacune sismique, nous avons découvert un important réseau de failles actives. Le tracé sud-est de ce réseau de failles passe par la ville de Zandjan. En conclusion, les localisations et les cinématiques des systèmes de faille étudiés sont discutées dans le cadre géodynamique général de la collision Arabie-Eurasie. On remarquera que la faille majeure de Nord Tabriz qui correspond essentiellement à un décrochement dextre a la même direction NW-SE que les décrochements sénestres présents dans la chaîne de l'Alborz (les failles de : Mosha, Talaghan et Manjil). Cette observation nécessite une variation de la direction de compression entre ces deux régions.

Résumé : Small-scale fisheries have traditionally received less research effort than large-scale fisheries and are generally under-studied in Europe. In spite of their comparatively low volume of catches and economic importance, small-scale fisheries are socially important and an integral part of the European coastal zone. Considering the high heterogeneity of situations and the paucity of quantitative data, we used an analytical methodology based on the comparative method. We carried out an analysis of small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in Europe based on a selection of nine case studies. Our objective was to obtain a comprehensive description of small-scale fleets covering different areas/fisheries/species, encompassing the diversity and specific conditions under which SSFs operate, in order to demonstrate the ecological and social sustainability of this often overlooked fisheries segment. A common approach formulated so that the case studies could be compared with the case histories of other competing users, required that for each set of criteria – technical, biological, socio-economic, and institutional – a set of relevant items and indicators was established. An analysis of characteristics common to the selected case studies is conducted and an attempt made to extend our comparisons to the whole of the European Union. Our results show that (as compared with large-scale fleets, their main competitor) small-scale fleets: (i) are composed of smaller vessels and, consequently, travel lower distances to fishing grounds, and are more reliant on coastal areas; (ii) have smaller crews (although the global employment figure is similar to that of large-scale fleets in Europe); (iii) use mostly, but not exclusively, passive gears; (iv) use multi-purpose fishing approaches, and can change the fish species they target during the year; (v) have lower extraction rates; (vi) have lower total capital investments (including fishing rights), turnover and costs; and (vii) have lower fuel consumption, making them less sensitive to changing oil prices. Dependence on subsidies is lower (viii). Involvement in fisheries management is variable, conservation and access regulation measures are largely local in origin. For the selected case studies, the most significant competitors are large-scale fleets, and recreational fisheries, but other sources of interaction (water quality, invasive species, etc.) cannot be ignored.

P>Tehran is one of the largest cities in the world (12 million people) facing seismic hazard. Standing at the foothills of Alborz Mountains, the capital of Iran is exposed to potential earthquakes associated with several nearby active faults. Classically mentioned as active features, the Kahrizak, the North Rey and the South Rey scarps cross the town itself and would be the sources of several destructive historical earthquakes. However, the nature of these topographic scarps remains uncertain. To assess whether these features correspond to active faults, we carried out a morphological and stratigraphic study. Our results show that the three scarps define horizontal scarp lines that follow contour lines matching ancient shorelines further East. This point, associated with other morphological characteristics such as the flatness of the upper and the lower surfaces, the long and regular streams that incised the upslope upper surfaces and the fact that the deposits are horizontal and without deformations, suggests in fact that the Kahrizak, the North Rey and the South Rey scarps correspond most likely to ancient shore lines and are not fault scarps.

The North Tehran Fault (NTF) is located at the southernmost piedmont of Central Alborz and crosses the northern suburbs of the Tehran metropolis and adjacent cities, where ∼15 million people live. Extending over a length of about 110 km, the NTF stands out as a major active fault and represents an important seismic hazard for the Iranian capital after historical seismicity. In order to characterize the activity of the NTF in terms of kinematics, magnitude and recurrence intervals of earthquakes, we carried out a first paleoseismological study of the fault within its central part between Tehran and Karaj cities. We opened a trench across a 3 m-high fault scarp affecting Quaternary deposits. Our study shows that the scarp is the result of repeated events along a main N115°E trending shallow dipping thrust fault, associated with secondary ruptures. From the trench analysis and Infrared Stimulated Luminescence (IRSL) dating of fault-related sediments, we interpreted between 6 and 7 surface-rupturing events that occurred during the past 30 kyrs. Their magnitudes (estimated from the displacements along the faults) are comprised between 6.1 and 7.2. The two last events - the largest - occurred during the past 7.9 ± 1.2 ka, which yields a Holocene slip rate of ∼0.3 mm/yr. The 7 earthquakes scenario suggests a regular periodicity with a mean recurrence interval of ∼3.8 kyrs. However, the two most recent events could correspond to the two largest historical earthquakes recorded in the area (in 312-280 B.C. and 1177 A.D.), and therefore suggest that the NTF activity is not regular.

The Taleghan fault (TF) is a major active fault of the Central Alborz mountain range in Iran. Located 50 km northwestwards of Tehran, this 80-km-long fault represents one of the major structures threatening 15 million people living in the capital of Iran and the surrounding cities (e.g. Karaj). The TF could be the source of some of the strongest historical earthquakes recorded in the Tehran region, notably the 958 AD event (estimated magnitude M 7.7). To characterize the kinematics and activity of the fault, we carried out a detailed morphological and palaeoseismological study combining aerial photographs, digital elevation models and fieldwork. We show that, unliked described so far, the TF is not a reverse fault but a left-lateral strike-slip fault with a normal component. Its strike, dip and rake within its eastern part are 105, 60 and -20/-40, respectively. Our palaeoseismological analysis shows that a sequence of 2-3 events with magnitudes M-w >= 7 occurred during the past 5300 years. If we consider a three-event scenario, the average recurrence interval is similar to 2000 years, and the most recent event is younger than 80 AD. If we consider a two-event scenario, the time interval between the second and the first events ranges between 3760 and 830 years, and the elapsed time since the last event ranges between 3529 and 1599 years. Combined with morphotectonics data, our palaeoseismological analysis allows estimating a minimum horizontal slip rate of 0.6-1.6 mm yr(-1) and a minimum vertical slip rate of similar to 0.5 mm yr(-1). Taking the similar to 450-m total vertical displacement observed across the fault, we conclude that the kinematical change along the TF (from reverse to left-lateral + normal) occurred similar to 1 Ma.

There are a number of tourism destinations which wish to be part of the luxury destination market; with their new and modern infrastructures, they believe they are considered as luxury. But, luxury is not decreed. Luxury is all about a system of production of specific offers. Only “one-of-a-kind” accommodation enrolled in the exceptional frameworks (nature or historical), sometimes in the heart of major capitals for exclusive enjoyment “between-ourself”, can be considered as luxury. The objective of this study is to identify luxury in the tourism field, to define its indicators and to identify the necessary conditions of luxury tourism through accommodation, attractions and destinations specialized in luxury tourism propaganda!
Nombre de destinations se réclament du tourisme de luxe ; vantant les mérites des nouvelles constructions ex nihilo, elles imaginent s’imposer dans le champ du tourisme de luxe sans en connaître les fondements. Or, le luxe ne se décrète pas. Le luxe s’inscrit dans un système de production de l’offre spécifique. Il privilégie des établissements singuliers inscrits dans les cadres exceptionnels (nature ou historique) parfois au cœur des grandes capitales pour une jouissance exclusive entre-soi. L’objectif de cette étude est de cerner le luxe dans le champ du tourisme, de définir des indicateurs, d’identifier les conditions nécessaires au tourisme de luxe à travers des établissements, des lieux, des destinations spécialisés.

The 856 A.D. Qumis earthquake (M7.9) is the most destructive earthquake to have occurred in Iran, killing more than 200,000 people and destroying the cities of Damghan and the old Parthian capital of Shahr-i Qumis (Hecatompylos). This study combines evidence of historical seismicity with observations of the geomorphology and paleoseismology to provide the first detailed description of active faulting in the Damghan region of the east Alborz mountains, Iran. Regional left-lateral shear is accommodated on the Astaneh, Damghan, and North Damghan faults. Quaternary alluvial fans have been displaced along the Astaneh fault, with 15–20 m stream offsets recording the cumulative displacement over the last two to five earthquakes. A paleoseismology study from a single trench along a 5–10 km segment of the Astaneh fault reveals a rupture prior to 1300 A.D. and significantly later than 600 B.C. Despite the limitations of a single trench in documenting the spatial and temporal evolution of the fault over the late Quaternary, we are nevertheless able to bracket the last event to a time period consistent with the 856 A.D. earthquake. Two older earthquakes were also identified during the Holocene occurring between 600 B.C. and 4600 B.C. and between 4600 B.C. and 9600 B.C. The location of our trench within a bend on the Astaneh fault, which could act as a barrier to rupture propagation, means the three earthquakes recovered from our trench over the Holocene may represent a minimum. Further trenching will reveal how the Astaneh fault ruptures over repeated earthquakes and, consequently, the magnitude and extent of slip during the 856 A.D. earthquake.
