The town of Black River, the capital of Saint Elizabeth, is one of Jamaica’s oldest towns and is named for one of the country’s longest rivers. It is reported that the town was the first to receive electricity and to have imported the first motorcar. In the foreground of a image is a sign that reads "Ministry of Communications and Works, Post Office, Black River." There is a billboard advertisement for Consulate menthol cigarettes with the slogan "Consulate comes cooler." In the distance are two buses and a Volkswagen van. Slide labeled Jam. Black River.

A man on a bicycle riding away from the Black River post office and bank. The building houses a branch of the Government Savings Bank and the post office. The Government Savings Bank was established in 1870 and was opened daily. With the act of the 23rd of June 1973, the assets of the bank were used to establish the Workers Savings and Loan Bank. On the 31st of October 1671, Jamaica became the first British colony to establish a post office. This two story building has a zinc roof with fretwork and also sends telegraphs. Black River is part of a protected National Heritage District in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Slide labeled Jam. Black River (S.).

Part of the “sugar works” yard of the Good Hope Plantation in Trelawny, Jamaica. Sugar cane would be processed in the sugar mill and the juice would then be carried across the river in an aqueduct which ran along the bridge to the factory, where sugar was made. Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica was originally a banana port, where rivers like the Rio Grande were used to transport bananas from the island’s interior to cargo ships. Errol Flynn is credited for popularizing bamboo rafting because he encouraged his friends and visitors to take these rafts for fun. Slide labeled Port Antonio rafts on river Jamaica.

Résumé : When Henry B. Plant brought the railroad to Tampa in 1884, he opened the door for many businesses to locate and flourish here. The railroad was at the center of the city's economy. From downtown it went to Port Tampa where one could board a Plant steamship to Jamaica, Cuba, New Orleans, Bermuda or other destinations. A spur of the rail line brought the train up to the west front of the hotel so guests could depart the train and walk directly into the lobby. The Tampa Bay Hotel cost approximately 2.5 million dollars to build and $500,000 to furnish. Consisting of 511 rooms, some of which were suites of 3-7 rooms, it provided a degree of luxury never before seen in Tampa. Most of the rooms had their own baths and all had electricity and telephones. In addition, guests were surrounded by a varied collection of furniture, porcelains, Venetian-style mirrors, and sculptures gathered by Mr. and Mrs. Plant in their travels in Europe. The Tampa Bay Hotel opened in 1891 amid wide fanfare and celebration. Henry Plant's dream was now a reality. The newspapers of the day described it as "brightly illuminated, filled with sumptuous decorations, thrilling music and graced with turrets, domes and minarets towering heavenward and glistening in the sun." It was a Victorian palace. The hotel was a lively place with balls, tea parties, and organized hunts during the winter social season. It was open seasonally from December to April in the 1890's. Once a guest arrived at the hotel, he needed to be entertained. Guests went wild game hunting as well as fresh and salt-water fishing. Water sports were also included like sailing, rowing, and canoeing. For the less adventuresome, there were bicycles, carriages, and rickshaws to ride you around the property. The hotel also offered golf, tennis, shuffleboard, billiards, and even a racetrack.

Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. The steamboat pictured went into service in 1909, the year of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration which celebrated Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Hudson River and Robert Fulton’s paddle steamer. Steamboat Robert Fulton belonged to the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948 traveling along the Hudson River from Albany to New York City. In 1959, the steamboat was brought on land to Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. The image shows cars parked next to the steamboat and in the distance are stacks of lumber behind what appears to be metal scaffolding. Slide labeled Robert Fulton Snake Cay Abaco April '65.
