During Christopher Columbus's second voyage to the New World, he landed on the North coast of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and called the area Santa Gloria. In 1503 during his fourth and final voyage, Columbus and his men were marooned in Jamaica. After his shipwreck, Columbus lived in Maima, a Taino (or Arawaks) Indian settlement near Seville for over a year. The Taino Indians were Jamaica’s first native people. The area is now part of the Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The image shows the remains of walls at an excavation site. Rose Hall Great House in Saint James, Jamaica is an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture, was built in 1770 by John Palmer, Custos of Saint Thomas, and his wife (for whom the house is named). It eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annie Mae Paterson. Following Annie Palmer's death, the plantation house became home to legendary story of the White Witch of Rose Hall. The Great House is built using cut stone on the first two levels and stucco on the third and uppermost level. This image was taken prior to the beginning of its reconstruction in the 1960s. Castleton Botanical Garden in Saint Mary, Jamaica was established on November 19, 1862 as a relocation site for the Bath Botanical Garden, located in Bath, Saint Thomas, which began to surfer after frequent flooding by the Sulfur River in the 19th century. The Castleton Gardens are located on both sides of Junction Road. Many species of plant specimens in the garden came from Kew Gardens in London, England. Plants pictured include ferns and crotons. Tower Isle Hotel was originally built in 1949, by founder Abraham ‘Abe’ Issa, as the first year-round resort on the Central North coast of Jamaica. Eventually, Issa earned the nicknamed “Mr. Jamaica” and later became the first chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board. Tower Isle was later renamed Couples Tower Isle.
