Episode 5 is devoted to a View of Guadeloupe by Jeanne Bouscaren, Mrs. Prinssay (known as Jenny Prinssay), the first female painter born in the West Indies, possibly evolving around the circle of Guadeloupean painter Guillaume Lethière, who had a women's studio. Baptized on August 7, 1771 in Goyave, Guadeloupe, the artist had been a member of the Bouscaren family, land owners, since the 18th century. Under the Empire, her Vues de la Guadeloupe et de la Martinique, exhibited at the Paris Salon, paved the way for the French school of Caribbean picturesque landscapes. Inspired by the beauty and grandeur of tropical landscapes, native artists and travelers alike devoted themselves to this small genre, which took off again in the 19th century throughout the Caribbean. But the presence of silhouetted slaves and sugar plantations also testifies, after the re-establishment of slavery, to everyday reality in the French West Indies and the continuation of the slave system until 1848.
