The distribution of redox-sensitive elements (V, U, Mo, Mn) was studied in a sedimentary archive of the Pierre-Blanche lagoon encompassing 3500 years of sedimentation. Between 240 and 255 cm (i.e. between 0 and 350 cal. ad) in the core, there was a dark layer with no mollusc shells. Enrichments of V, U and Mo and depletion of Mn were observed in this layer compared with overlying and underlying sediments. This was attributed to the occurrence of anoxia in bottom water or at the sediment/water interface during the Roman period. This episode was concomitant with the formation of a sandy barrier, which now isolates the lagoon from the sea. Our results suggest that the isolation of the lagoon, which was deeper in the period concerned than at present, favoured stagnation of the water. Combined with the excess nutrient inputs because of human activities in Lattara harbour, stagnation may have caused anoxia in bottom water at least in some parts of the Palavasian lagoon system. Bottom conditions nevertheless remained sufficiently reducing for the accumulation of U and Mo to persist until around 800 cal. ad. Although the lagoon has been hyper-eutrophic since at least the middle of the 20th century and although anoxia occurs frequently in summer, redox proxies show no evidence for their occurrence. The shallow water and associated resuspension and reoxidation events explain the lack of V, Mo and U enrichment in recent sediments.

Résumé : From the protolanguage born with Homo erectus, the modern human language of Homo sapiens has naturally diversified into tonal, stress-timed, or syllable-timed languages, although the definition of the syllable has yet to be established. Thus for a French speaker, the transition from a language punctuated by the syllable to a language punctuated by the lexical stress will be a delicate point in learning oral English. For this purpose, we recommend the implementation of a reprogramming of the articulatory gesture in the brains as evidenced by articulatory phonology. Through the arched beam, Broca's area of the French-speaking learner will inhibit the French-related data to send to Wernicke's area new information regarding the reception / production of oral English.
A partir du protolangage né avec Homo erectus, le langage humain moderne d'Homo sapiens s'est naturellement diversifié en langues tonales, accentuelles, ou syllabiques, bien que la définition de la syllabe reste encore à établir. Ainsi pour un francophone, le passage d'une langue rythmée par la syllabe à une langue rythmée par l'accent lexical sera un point délicat de l'apprentissage de l'anglais oral. Pour ce faire, nous préconisons la mise en place d'une reprogrammation de la gestuelle articulatoire telle qu'elle a pu être mise en évidence par la phonologie articulatoire. Par le biais du faisceau arqué, l'aire de Broca de l'apprenant francophone inhibera les données liées au français pour envoyer à l'aire de Wernicke de nouvelles informations quant à la réception / production de l'anglais oral. Résumé : Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007 at Reunion Island, 12 specimens of the pomacentrid genus Chromis were collected at sea surface. One of these fishes was a C. chrysura known from the reef Island fauna. The others have enlarged eyes. Among them were one C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), new for the Island fauna, and ten specimens of a new Chromis species, described here under the name C. durvillei. This new species of deep dwelling Chromis is distinguishable by large sized eyes 1.9 to 2.4 in the head length, D. XIII, 12-13, 25 to 26 gill-rakers on the first gill arch, three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, without black or dark brown spot or band on the body, pectorals or caudal peduncle. C. axillaris, C. woodsi, C. unipa, C. okamurai, C. struhsakeri and generally C. mirationis have 14 spinous dorsal rays. C. abyssicola and rarely C. mirationis have 13 spinous dorsal rays but two spiniform procurrent caudal rays and a dark axillary spot on pectorals.
Parmi les poissons récoltés en surface à l’île de la Réunion (océan Indien sud-ouest), après l’éruption volcanique d’avril 2007, se trouvaient 12 exemplaires du genre Chromis. Un C. chrysura connu de la faune récifale de l’île et 11 exemplaires présentant des yeux de grande taille : un C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), nouveau pour la faune de l’île de La Réunion et 10 Chromis distinguables des autres espèces du genre par des yeux de grande taille (1,9 à 2,4 fois dans la longueur de la tête), D. XIII , 12-13, 25 à 26 branchicténies sur le premier arc branchial, trois rayons caudaux procurrents épineux et l’absence de tache ou de bande de couleur foncée sur le corps, les pectorales ou le pédoncule caudal. C. axillaris, C. woodsi, C. unipa, C. okamurai, C. struhsakeri et C. mirationis ont 14 rayons épineux à la dorsale, alors que C. abyssicola et rarement C. mirationis n’en ont que 13, mais deux rayons caudaux procurrents et une tache axillaire noire sur les pectorales. Cette espèce nouvelle de Chromis est décrite sous le nom de C. durvillei.

Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location.
Walter W. S. Cook (wearing shorts) walks with another companion on North Cat Cay, Bimini, Bahamas. Cook, who was the founding director of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, served as an art professor from 1932 to 1953, and was historian of Medieval Spanish art. North Cat Cay was purchased in 1931 by Louis Wasey as a private island and is presently (2013) owned by members of the Cat Cay Yacht Club. The walking path is lined with palm trees. In the distance is a view of the ocean and a tall, narrow stone building with windows, an arched doorway, and a pyramid shaped roof. Slide labeled Cat Cay, Mar '46.
