Les metiers de la peche a La Reunion (ocean Indien): description et evolution des techniques de peche sur les dispositifs de concentration de poissons (DCP) Auteur(s) : Roos, David Tessier, E Berthier, P Berthier, L Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Since a few years, the catches of pelagic fish by artisanal fishermen of Reunion Island have strongly increased. Manpower and investments have been constant through the maintenance of about 30 fads all around the island. The traditional techniques of fishing pelagic fishes have been adapted in order to maintain a high level of catches and ensure the income of the fishermen. This report describes different techniques to capture pelagic fish on fads such as drift fishing, dragnet fishing and longline fishing. Knowledge, professional experience of fishermen are the main factors in setting fads and sustaining adaptability. The strong relation between the knowledge of the fishermen and the techniques is discussed. Then, the strategies of fishing, influenced by the environmental and seasonal conditions, and the species, are analysed. Analyse fonctionnelle des causes de rupture des DCP de la Réunion (océan Indien) Auteur(s) : Sacchi, Jacques Tessier, E Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 15-19 octobre 1999 Résumé : The development of the FAD gave rise to technical problems owing to their conception, their setting spot and of their utilisation. Failings generated by the unreliability of components or the uncertain repair precariousness, those can prove to be here more and more expensive with the progression of the ageing of devices and reasons of their loss. For as various domains that aerospace or the fishing deck layout, the engineering has functional analysis tools that permit to reduce conception uncertainties of systems by the mean of a hierarchical classification of function values of components. The application of one of these techniques, the FMEA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, to the study of reasons of FAD loss in La Reunion describes perfectly everything that this type of method can bring to the appraisal in fishing technology. This preventive analysis method assess the potential risks integrates perfectly in the mind of a precaution approach as it would agree to see to apply to the FADs and to their exploitation. One of these fishes was a C. chrysura known from the reef Island fauna. The others have enlarged eyes. Among them were one C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), new for the Island fauna, and ten specimens of a new Chromis species, described here under the name C. durvillei. This new species of deep dwelling Chromis is distinguishable by large sized eyes 1.9 to 2.4 in the head length, D. XIII, 12-13, 25 to 26 gill-rakers on the first gill arch, three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, without black or dark brown spot or band on the body, pectorals or caudal peduncle. C. axillaris, C. woodsi, C. unipa, C. okamurai, C. struhsakeri and generally C. mirationis have 14 spinous dorsal rays. C. abyssicola and rarely C. mirationis have 13 spinous dorsal rays but two spiniform procurrent caudal rays and a dark axillary spot on pectorals. The volcanic island of Mayotte (374 km super(2)) is part of the Comoros Archipelago, which is situated on the North of Mozambic's Canal (Indian Ocean). Mayotte is composed of two islands and some thirty small islands distributed in a lagoon of more than 1,000 km super(2). Being one of the French Republic's Territorial Collectivity, this island is characterized by a very fast demographic evolution (growth rate : 5.8 %), which constitutes the foundation of the development problematic. Most of local halieutic production comes from the reef (nearly 2,000 t in 1999), the technic of "palangrotte" (deep line) is still dominating. The fishing fleet is composed of monoxyl pirogues and polyester fishing boats for the 1,200 fishermen. The first FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) were installed in 1989. Now, 5 FADs are situated in the lagoon whereas 10 others have been installed out of it. If it is very hard to evaluate economic impact of FAD in Mayotte, their success seems to be limited because of several local constraints : fear to fish out of the lagoon, little interest in tuna, lack of formation. Nevertheless, faced to the demographic evolution and the decrease of the reef ressources, a program of fishing development on FAD has been initiated in 1998, with those following themes : realization of a new prototype of FAD, experimental fishing program with vertical drift "long line", teaching programs for the local fishermen. Today, it is too early to analyze the informations already collected, but the results are very promising, and validate the technical improvement of the new prototype. Argyripnus hulleyi a new species of Sternoptychidae (Stomiiformes) from Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) Auteur(s) : Quero, Jean-claude Spitz, Jerome Vayne, Jean-jacques Éditeur(s) : Société Française d'Ichtyologie Résumé : Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007, nine specimens of Argyripnus (family Sternoptychidae, order Stomiiformes) were among the fish caught at the sea surface at Reunion Island (Indian Ocean). Seven species were described in this genus: A. ephippiatus Gilbert & Cramer, 1897 from Hawaii, A. iridescens McCulloch, 1926 from Australia. A. atlanticus Maul, 1952 from Madeira, A. brocki Struhsaker, 1973 from Hawaii, Argyripnus sp. Yamamoto in Okamura et al., 1982 from Japan, A. electronus Parin, 1992 from the South-east Pacific and A. pharos Harold & Lancaster, 2003 from the Indian Ocean and the central-west Pacific. The Argyripnus from Reunion Island is easily distinguished from the other species by the position of the anus just before the beginning of the anal fin (about half distance between the pelvic base and the beginning of the anal fin in the other species). The new Argyripnus from Reunion Island is described under the name A. hulleyi. Some indications are given on the bathymetric and geographical distributions of all the Argyripnus species. After a brief comparison of the characteristics of the seven species, an identification key is provided. La ciguatera dans l'Ocean Indien: etude des poissons veneneux des bancs de l'Archipel des Mascareignes et de la crete centrale de l'Ocean Indien Auteur(s) : Lebeau, Alain Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : In this paper, the authors present a general table of the present extension of ciguatoxism in the Mascarene Islands. A statistically significant relation exists between the variations of poisonous fish proportions and the periods of tropical cyclones in this fishing area. The tests showed that the ciguatera known from Mauritius, Rodriguez, Chagos and Saya-de-Malha Islands, is also present in the Amirantes Islands. The coastal ichtyosarcotoxism of the Reunion was also studied; this phenomenon does not constitute an obstacle to the activity of the artisanal fishery. A worldwide review of purse seine fisheries on FADs Auteur(s) : Fonteneau, Alain Pallares, P Pianet, Renaud Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper develops a comparative overview of the development of Fish Aggregating Devices (or fads) by the tropical purse seine fisheries in various ocean areas (Atlantic, Indian, Western and Eastern Pacific Oceans). First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. The first fad's in the islands of the South West Indian Ocean were moored in the fifties. The area under study forms part of the Indian Ocean Commission which include Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Reunion and the island of Mayotte. After a few isolated trials that turned to be inconclusive, especially for lack of reliability of the devices moored, trials were pursued under the auspices of International Organizations. A new type of fad was successfully designed and implemented in Mauritius. This model was then applied in the Comoros in 1987, in la Reunion and Madagascar in 1988 and in Mayotte in 1989. The various programmes have had various results. In some cases such as la Reunion and Mauritius, they have played a key role in the development of the inshore fishery. In other cases they have been less significant. Finally in other cases although a significant impact on artisanal fishery, the experience was halted due to financial constraints. Beyond the history of the various programmes and the results obtained, the authors have attempted to underline the social and economic factors that have characterized the various trials in the different regional countries. An updated checklist of the marine fish fauna of Reunion Island, South-Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Letourneur, Yves Chabanet, Pascale Durville, Patrick Taquet, Marc Teissier, Emmanuel Parmentier, Maurice Quero, Jean-claude Pothin, Karine Éditeur(s) : Revue Internationale d'Ichtyologie Résumé : The ichthyofauna of Reunion Island, Southwestern Indian Ocean, was sampled during several ecological and artisanal fisheries studies. Information from these investigations and from other sources were included to compile the present checklist of the marine fishes of the island. A total of 885 species belonging to 150 families was recorded. Nine species are known only from Reunion, indicating endemism of about 1.0%. The most speciose families (Labridae, Gobiidae, Serranidae, and Pomacentridae) were also among the most speciose at the neighbouring Mauritius Island (except gobiids), and, generally, on other islands in the Indian Ocean area (Maldives, Chagos, Madagascar and Christmas Island). The Gobiidae only represented 5.4% of the ichthyofauna, which was similar to the ratio for Aqaba (Red Sea), contrasting with 8.0% recorded for the Maldives, 13.0% at Chagos or other higher percentages recorded in the Pacific Ocean. The Apogonidae and Scaridae are relatively poorly diversified at Reunion, also in contrast with the Maldives, Madagascar, Chagos, Aqaba (Red Sea) and certain Pacific areas. The recent geological origins of Reunion Island and the low diversity of its marine biotopes are probably the most significant factors explaining both the total species richness and species richness of some major families.
