The historic structures of socio-cultural identities that developed during the American colonial period were so vastly diverse that it would be difficult and inaccurate to project a homogenic view of regions that were integrated under the flag of a country or nation, the Central America Mosquito Coast illustrates that diversity. The Mosquitia as a historic entity experienced a process of construction which had as foundation partnerships and diverse contributions from foreign travelers. These contributions transformed the Mosquitia in a sovereign territory with its own historic heritage. This historic heritage distance itself from the colonial history to integrate the Caribbean history. Report of the first meeting of the Caribbean Region of the International Resource Network Éditeur(s) : Caribbean IRN Caribbean IRN Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. The first meeting of the Caribbean Region of the International Resource Network was an undeniable success. The more than thirty people present came from or have relationships with over a dozen Caribbean countries and territories using all four major languages of the region. They are activists, scholars, politicians, and artists – and many occupy more than one of these roles at once. In addition to individual introductions, an important element of the meeting was brief reports of the major issues faced by sexual minorities in different Caribbean countries and territories. This enabled participants to have a better idea of the historical and contemporary situations in places with which they were less familiar. “Finding the Silver Voice: Afro-Antilleans in the Panama Canal Museum Collection at the University of Florida” Auteur(s) : 13th International Conference on Caribbean Literature (ICCL)—Panama in the Caribbean: The Caribbean in Panama. University of Panama, Panama City, November 13-16, 2013. ( Conference ) Vargas-Betancourt, Margarita ( Author, Primary ) Résumé : (Acquisition) Collected for University of Florida's Institutional Repository by the UFIR Self-Submittal tool. Submitted by Margarita Vargas-Betancourt. This paper was part of the panel Panama Silver and the Making of Modern Literature, which introduced a collaborative, digital humanities course entitled “Panama Silver, Asian Gold: Migration, Money, and the Making of Modern Caribbean Literature,” and illuminated the significance of West Indians in Panama for the formation of Caribbean literature. The panelists designed and taught the course at Amherst College, the University of Florida, and the University of Miami. In the first paper in this panel, Rhonda Cobham-Sander articulated the overarching goal of the course; namely, that these two, closely related migrations were critical to the development of the Caribbean middle class, political nationalism, and national literatures. In the second paper, Leah Rosenberg outlined primary historical and literary sources on West Indians in Panama now available in the Digital Library of the Caribbean (www.dloc.com) and discussed how this supports collaboration in teaching and research. In the third paper, Margarita Vargas-Betancourt discussed the challenges of finding archival materials concerning West Indians in Panama in, U.S.-oriented archives (which we are using in the course). In the final paper, Donette Francis demonstrated the implications of positioning Panama Silver, the capital accumulated by West Indians, as critical to shaping modern Caribbean literature by reexamining Salkey’s understudied 1971 novel, The Late Emancipation of Jerry Stover. Devon House in Saint Andrew, Jamaica ; The Bryant Slides Collection ; The Bryant Slides Collection, Jamaica Auteur(s) : Unknown ( Photographer ) Lazarus, Charles P., 1836-1917 ( Architect ) Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location. Devon House was built in 1881 by Jamaica’s first black millionaire George Stiebel. The land was first assigned to Reverend John Zellers by King George II in May 1667 to aid in the Anglican Church’s efforts to spread Christianity on the island. The house’s architectural style is a mix of Jamaican and English Georgian style architecture and is located at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Hope Road, in what later became known as Millionaire’s corner. In 1967, the house was purchased by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and was later declared a national monument in 1990 after winning the American Express Historic Preservation Award. Devon House is a Jamaica Heritage Site owned by the Jamaican government. Slide labeled Jam. in Kingston Devon House.
