Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location.
The Caribe Hilton was built in 1949, becoming the first Hilton hotel outside of the continental US, and thus marking the beginning of Hilton International. Designed by Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer, it originally contained 300 rooms, but has since expanded through multiple renovations (including major remodeling and grand re-opening in 1999). A staple of the Puerto Rican tourism industry, The Caribe Hilton’s frequent guests include famous entertainers, athletes, and political figures. It is also known for one of its bars, where the first Piña Colada drink was made in August 1954. Also visible in the photograph, is part of the Condado Lagoon and the historic Fortín de San Gerónimo del Boquerón, which was built in the 17th century and was crucial in the defense of San Juan against a British attack in 1797.

Résumé : Kalinago (Carib) Indians migrated from South America into the Windward Islands beginning about 1400. They resisted the Europeans, and eventually retreated to the more mountainous parts of St. Vincent and Dominica, where they inter-married with escaped African slaves. In 1796 the British deported the St. Vincent Kalinago (about 5,000) to the island of Ruatan off Honduras. From there, they moved into present-day Belize, where their descendants live today. Descendants of the Dominica Kalinago still live on Dominica. This print portrays a number of their customs.

When the European arrived in the Lesser Antilles they have been in contact with their Amerindian inhabitant they will call "Caribs". By this way, an important text corpus concerning those peoples will be constituted between the fifteen and the eighteen centuries. Since the archaeological researches beginnings in the archipelago until today, establish a link between those historic texts and the archaeological findings have been one of the the archaeologists main objectives. We will present here a review of the works about this question. By this way we will be able to observe the progressive transformation of the relationship between the archaeologists and the text sources and this of their utilization mode. This transformation is related to an historians and archaeologist discussion concerning the European text about Lesser Antilles Amerindian real value.
Lors de leur arrivée dans les Petites Antilles les Européens ont été au contact de populations amérindiennes qu'elles ont dénommées "Caraïbes". Ainsi, un important corpus de texte concernant ces groupes a été constitué, entre les XVé et XVIIIé siècles. Dès les débuts de l'archéologie dans l'archipel et jusqu'à aujourd'hui un des enjeux importants de la recherche a été de tenter d'établir un lien entre ces sources historiques et les découvertes effectuées au cours des fouilles. C'est un bilan de ces recherches que nous présenterons ici. Par la mise en évidence des grandes étapes qu'a connues le traitement de cette question, il nous sera possible d'observer la modification progressive du rapport des archéologues aux sources textuelles ainsi que celle de leur mode d'utilisation. Une modification qui s'est effectuée en parallèle d'une discussion, menée tant par les historiens que par les archéologues, sur la valeur des textes des Européens traitant du peuplement amérindien des Petites Antilles.

Résumé : Les constructions socio-historiques et identitaires qui eurent lieu en Amérique durant l’époque coloniale furent si diverses qu’il s’avère difficile –et surtout impropre- de projeter une vision unique sur des espaces qui furent réunis sous l’étendard d’un pays ou d’une nation. La côte de la Mosquitia centraméricaine est l’un de ces exemples qui montrent cette diversité de constructions. La côte de la Mosquitia s’est construite à travers les siècles colonisateurs, se nourrissant de contacts, d’alliances et d’apports étrangers divers qui firent d’elle un espace autonome avec une histoire propre. Une histoire qui se détacha de l’histoire coloniale espagnole pour se rapprocher de celle de l’espace caraïbe.
The historic structures of socio-cultural identities that developed during the American colonial period were so vastly diverse that it would be difficult and inaccurate to project a homogenic view of regions that were integrated under the flag of a country or nation, the Central America Mosquito Coast illustrates that diversity. The Mosquitia as a historic entity experienced a process of construction which had as foundation partnerships and diverse contributions from foreign travelers. These contributions transformed the Mosquitia in a sovereign territory with its own historic heritage. This historic heritage distance itself from the colonial history to integrate the Caribbean history.
Las construcciones históricas, de identidades sociales y culturales que se desarrollaron en América durante la época colonial fueron tan diversas que sería difícil – y sobre todo impropio- proyectar una imagen homogénea de espacios que fueron reunidos bajo la bandera de un país o de una nación. La costa de la Mosquitia es uno de esos ejemplos que ilustran esa diversidad de construcciones. La costa de la Mosquitia –como entidad histórica- se formó durante la época colonial a través de contactos, de alianzas y de influencias extranjeras diversas que la convirtieron en un espacio autónomo, con una historia propia. Una historia que se distanció de la historia colonial para integrarse a la historia caribeña.

Résumé : La préservation et l’exploitation durable du patrimoine culturel, en particulier du patrimoine historique (et, accessoirement, scientifique), et sa mise en tourisme au service d’activités de loisirs et de découverte, suscitent de nouvelles formes et alimentent de nouvelles offres de tourismes, dites « alternatives », sur lesquelles elle s’appuie en retour.Le patrimoine historique de la Guadeloupe, tant agricole qu’industriel, longtemps délaissé et aujourd’hui redécouvert et remis en valeur, en constitue un exemple significatif, comme il en va dans d’autres territoires et pays de la Caraïbe. Il en illustre les potentialités tout en justifiant les attentes qui s’y attachent en matière de développement local tant touristique que plus général.La reconnaissance de la valeur patrimoniale et de l’intérêt culturel des sites concernés constitue toutefois un phénomène relativement récent, à travers leur sauvegarde et leur réhabilitation. Leur valorisation et leur ouverture au public vont de pair avec leur exploitation au profit d’un tourisme de mémoire marqué par une forte connotation pédagogique.
The preservation and sustainable use of cultural heritage, especially historical (and, incidentally, scientific) heritage, and its introduction into tourism for the benefit of leisure and discovery activities, give rise to new forms and fuel new offers of tourism, called “alternatives”, on which they rely in return.The historical heritage of Guadeloupe, both agricultural and industrial, which has long been untouched and now being rediscovered and restored, is a significant example of this, as it is in other Caribbean territories and countries. It illustrates their potentialities while justifying the expectations that are attached to them in terms of local development both tourism and more general.Recognition of the heritage value and cultural interest of the sites concerned, however, is a relatively recent phenomenon, through their safeguarding and rehabilitation. Their valorisation and their opening to the public go hand in hand with their exploitation in favor of a tourism of memory marked by a strong pedagogical connotation.
La conservación y el uso sostenible del patrimonio cultural, especialmente del patrimonio histórico (y, de paso, científico), y su asignacion al turismo en el servicio de la recreación y del descubrimiento, dan lugar a nuevas formas y nuevos acuerdos de suministro turismo "alternativo", en los que se basa en el rendimiento.El patrimonio histórico de Guadalupe, tanto agrícolas como industriales, y hoy a largo redescuidado y redescubierto, constituye un ejemplo significativo, como es el caso en otros territorios y países del Caribe. Esto ilustra sus potencialidades y justifica las expectativas para uno desarrollo local turistico como mas general.El reconocimiento de la valor patrimonial y de la importancia cultural de los sitios considerados, sin embargo, es un fenómeno relativamente reciente, a través de su protección y rehabilitación. Su desarrollo y su apertura al público van mano a mano con su explotación en beneficio de un turismo de memoria marcada por una fuerte connotación educativa.

Résumé : Avril 2011. L’agitation dans les rues est le signe qu’un événement capital pour l’avenir du pays se prépare : Raoul Castro a convoqué la réunion du 6e congrès du Parti Communiste Cubain. Après des années de revendication d’un système social égalitaire échappant à la tutelle étasunienne, les structures économiques de la perle des Caraïbes sont remises en question. L’arrivée des printemps arabes, qui symbolisent la révolte des peuples vis-à-vis d’une gouvernance politique et économique autoritaire et rigide, n’est probablement pas étrangère à ce soudain besoin de modifier les structures économiques existantes à Cuba. Au menu, ce sont 291 mesures qui sont annoncées pour améliorer le quotidien des cubains, dont le salaire moyen mensuel est de 12 euros. Quant à la relation qu’entretient Cuba avec l’UE, elle revêt aujourd’hui une dimension surtout bilatérale : la position commune de 1996 n’a en effet jamais été modifiée, les Etats Membres adoptant une attitude différente selon les relations qu’ils entretiennent avec Cuba, tant d’un point de vue politique qu’historique.
April, 2011. The excitement in streets is the sign that a major event for the future of the country gets ready: Raoul Castro convened the meeting of the 6th congress of the Cuban Communist Party. After years of defending an equalitarian social system escaping the American guardianship, the economic structures of the pearl of Caribbean islands are questioned. The arrival of Arab Springs, which symbolize the revolt of the peoples towards authoritarian and stiff political and economic governance, is most probably linked to this sudden need to modify the economic structures existing in Cuba. To the menu, 291 measures are announced to improve the everyday life of Cubans, the monthly average wage of which is 12 euro. As for the relation which maintains Cuba with the EU, it takes on an especially bilateral dimension today: the common position of 1996 was modified indeed never, Member States adopting a different attitude according to the relations which they maintain with Cuba, from a political point of view as well as from a historic one.

Después de anos reivindicando un sistema social igualitario que escapó a la tutela estadounidense, las estructuras económicas de la perla del Caribe están siendo cuestionadas. La llegada de las primaveras árabes, símbolo de la rebelión de los pueblos frente de una gobernanza política y económica autoritaria y rígida, probablemente no es ajena extranjera a esta necesidad súbita de modificar las estructuras económicas existentes en Cuba. Como parte del programa, 291 medidas son anunciadas para mejorar la vida diaria del cubano, cuyo salario medio mensual es de 12 euros.
