The Garden of Remembrance, pictured in the foreground, houses a stone cenotaph, a monument which serves as a memorial to Bahamians who lost their lives in World Wars I and II. In the background is the building currently known as the Ansbacher House, which is the home of Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited. Previously the building housed the Bahamas International Trust Company Limited, known as “BITCO”, which was established in 1957. In 1989, BITCO was sold to the Ansbacher Group of Companies and which later changed its name to Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited in 1994. Slide labeled Public Sq Nassau, April 12 '65.

The construction of the House of Assembly in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine was completed by 1762. This red-brick, two-story building was the official meeting place for the Jamaican government until 1872, when Kingston took became the capital of Jamaica. As of 2013, the structure has been used as the offices for the Saint Catherine Parish Council. On August 1, 1838 Jamaica marked the day all slaves were made free. In Celebration of Emancipation, the Proclamation of Freedom was read aloud by Governor Sir Lionel Smith from the steps of King's House to the assembled masses in the square of Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica. Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in 1893. In the foreground of the image is Emancipation Square, a small park bordered by a shrub with variegated leaves and surrounded by a wrought iron gate. The interior of the park has been planted with palm trees, has benches, a flag pole, and a small fountain. Slide labeled Jam. at Spanish Town.

The photographer labeled this picture "center of island." This is a photograph of the home of a poor peasant family. The home is of the bohio, thatched palm wood huts On the bottom of the outside walls you can see large rocks that are placed there to help with the rough winds, particularly during the hurricane season. There are many flowers pots hanging from the house as decorations. A mother and child are standing in front of the house while a dog lays asleep a few feet away. The back of the house is lined with royal palm trees.

Taken from the bohio is the thatched palm roofs, but with modern walls. There are many flowers in the yard and rows of royal palm trees behind the home.

Mallica Reynolds, known as Kapo, is a self-taught artist, whose work has been exhibited in various countries and has won numerous honors including the 1985 Norman Manley Award for Excellence in the Fine Arts. Reynolds was a Zionist Revival leader, or shepherd, whose artworks included sculptors and paintings which recorded religious subjects, everyday life, and the Jamaican landscape. In the image, Reynolds is standing next to one of his painting which features Jamaican rural houses surrounded by trees.

The restoration of Rose Hall Great House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture, began in the 1960s, after its purchase by John Rollins, former Lieutenant Governor of Delaware in the United States of America. This plantation house in Saint James, Jamaica is home to the legendary story of Annie Palmer, known as the White Witch of Rose Hall. Slide labeled Rose Hall (ghost) N. coast.

Résumé : La Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Immaculada was built of Cuban limestone between 1748 and 1777. It became a cathedral in 1789. The cathedral faces the Plaza de la Catedral. The curtained carriage to the left may be a hearse. Palaces surround the other three sides of the square. On the left is the mansion of the Marquis de Aguas Claras, now El Patio Restaurant. The building on the right was built in 1741 as a house for the Marquesses de Arcos. In 1825 it became Cuba's first post office.

In 1625, Barbados was claimed on behalf of England. In 1627, Barbados was colonized and attained independence in 1966. The Barbados Parliament, established in 1639, was the third oldest Parliament in the British Commonwealth. The Parliament Buildings, completed in 1874, are the meeting places for the two chambers of Parliament, the Senate and the House of Assembly. The Legislative Council, originally established during the island’s colonization, was replaced by a Senate in 1964. The main entrance to the House of Assembly, the lower house, has a Bust of Sir William Conrad Reeves the first black person to be knighted. The architecture of the buildings reflects a Gothic revival featuring arches. The picture includes a woman in a yellow dress and a man next to a school. Many forms of transportation vehicles are seen: automobiles, scooters, motorcycles, and bicycles. Slide labeled Public Bldgs. Barbados.

Pictured are several "bohíos", thatched palm wood huts used by the pre-Colombian indians of Cuba. This photographed is interesting in that one can see how the use of the bohios has progressed. The bohio on the right represents how they would have been used by the early indian population, while the one on the left of it is a more developed stage. The one on the left has walls, an idea developed by the Spanish that moved to the countryside and used the indian bohio, yet adapted ideas used in the dwellings that they were more familiar with.

29 inorganic compounds (Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Gd, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nd, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, Ti, U, V and Zn) were measured in the tap water of 484 representative homes of children aged 6 months to 6 years in metropolitan France in 2008-2009. Parents were asked whether their children consumed tap water. Sampling design and sampling weights were taken into account to estimate element concentrations in tap water supplied to the 3,581,991 homes of 4,923,058 children aged 6 months to 6 years. Median and 95th percentiles of concentrations in tap water were in mu g/L: Al: <10, 483, As: 02, 2.1; B: <100, 100; Ba: 30.7, 149.4; Ca: 85,000, 121,700; Cd: <0.5, <0.5; Ce: <0.5, <0.5; Co: <0.5, 0.8; Cr: <5, <5; Cu: 70, 720; K: 2210, 6740; Fe: <20, 46; Mn: <5, <5; Mo: <0.5,1.5; Na: 14,500, 66,800; Ni: <2,10.2; Mg: 6500,21,200; Pb: <1, 5.4; Sb: <0.5, <0.5; Se: <1, 6.7; Sr: 256.9, 1004; TI: <0.5, <0.5; U: <0.5, 2.4; V: <1, 1; Zn; 53, 208. Of the 2,977,123 young children drinking tap water in France, some were drinking water having concentrations above the 2011 World Health Organization drinking water quality guidelines: respectively 498 (CI 95%: 0-1484) over 700 mu g/L of Ba; 121,581 (CI 95%: 7091-236,070) over 50 mg/L of Na; 2044 (CI 95%: 0-6132) over 70 mu g/L of Ni, and 78,466 (17,171-139,761) over 10 mu g/L of Pb. Since it is representative, this tap water contamination data can be used for integrated exposure assessment, in conjunction with diet and environmental (dust and soil) exposure data. (Biographical) Aida García Alonso was Cuban. She attended Mexico's National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) where she got a degree in cultural anthropology. After the Cuban Revolution, García Alonso returned to Cuba. There she started to do ethnographic research in Las Yaguas, a series of slums in Havana. Her work coincided with the Cuban government's project of relocating Las Yaguas' dwellers to new houses built by the new regime. The result of her fieldwork was the book Manuela la Mexicana published by Casa de las Americas in 1968. In the 1970s, García Alonso was preparing a second edition. For this newer edition she prepared photographs and statistics on the people who used to live in Las Yaguas and was relocated. Fidel Castro's government censored the work, and García Alonso went into exile to Mexico in 1980, where she died in 2009. This digital collection includes the photographs, captions, and statistics that were to be included in the second edition of Manuela la Mexicana.
