Résumé : During the " Jean Charcot " cruise Polymed II, 18 species of the 5 classes of Echinodermata have been collected in 15 samples from the bathyal zone of the Alboran sea. Most species are already known from the Mediterranean and the North East Atlantic. Some rare species (Odontaster mediterranea, Ophiactis balli) have been collected, and two others (Neocomatella europaea. Henricia abyssalis) are recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean. Endemic distributions of Ceramaster hystricis and Ophiocten abyssicolum are discussed. The Echinoderms population of the Alboran sea is noteworthy for its Atlantic characteristic, which is besides, dominating in the North part of this area. The atlantic biogeographical relationships of the Echinoderm fauna of the Alboran sea is especially perceptible in the northern part of the basin. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
Lors de la campagne Polymède II du " Jean Charcot ", 18 espèces appartenant aux cinq classes d'Échinodermes ont été récoltées dans 15 prélèvements effectués dans l'étage bathyal de la mer d'Alboran. La plupart des espèces sont connues à la fois de la Méditerranée et des côtes européennes et africaines de l'Atlantique. On peut signaler la récolte d'espèces considérées comme rares en Méditerranée (Odontaster mediterranea, Ophiactis balli) et d'autres nouvelles pour cette mer (Neocomatella europaea, Henricia abyssalis). L'endémisme de deux espèces Ceramaster hystricis et Ophiocten abyssicolum est rediscuté. Résumé : Prior to this study, two species of ophiuroid had been described from hydrothermal vent sites, and another from methane cold seeps, all from the Atlantic Ocean. Although ophiuroids have occasionally been reported from vents in the Pacific Ocean as well, none has been described before. This study presents two new species, Spinophiura jolliveti gen. et sp. nov., family Ophiuridae, and Ophiolamina eprae gen. et sp. nov., family Ophiacanthidae, which are most likely endemic to reducing environments in the East Pacific. We also include detailed descriptions of the post-metamorphic development of these species. Spinophiura jolliveti is characterized by up to five rather long, semi-erect arm spines and a relatively small oral shield. Its postlarva is unusual in lacking a buccal scale and in that the tooth forms later in development than in all other species the postlarvae of which have been examined. The most characteristic features of O. eprae are the attitude of the three proximal laminar mouth papillae, standing almost vertically on the oral plate, and the presence of two oval, scale-like, distal papillae. Additional migrant (non-vent-endemic) species found at Pacific vent sites are tabularized, but not identified below genus level due to the poor taxonomic state of the Pacific ophiuroid fauna. Biogeographic and ecological issues are discussed.

Résumé : Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were used to analyse the population genetic structure of southwestern Indian Ocean green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations. Analysis of sequence variation over 396 bp of the mtDNA control region revealed seven haplotypes among 288 individuals from 10 nesting sites in the Southwest Indian Ocean. This is the first time that Atlantic Ocean haplotypes have been recorded among any Indo-Pacific nesting populations. Previous studies indicated that the Cape of Good Hope was a major biogeographical barrier between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because evidence for gene flow in the last 1.5 million years has yet to emerge. This study, by sampling localities adjacent to this barrier, demonstrates that recent gene flow has occurred from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean via the Cape of Good Hope. We also found compelling genetic evidence that green turtles nesting at the rookeries of the South Mozambique Channel (SMC) and those nesting in the North Mozambique Channel (NMC) belong to separate genetic stocks. Furthermore, the SMC could be subdivided in two different genetic stocks, one in Europa and the other one in Juan de Nova. We suggest that this particular genetic pattern along the Mozambique Channel is attributable to a recent colonization from the Atlantic Ocean and is maintained by oceanic conditions in the northern and southern Mozambique Channel that influence early stages in the green turtle life cycle.

Coral spawning times have been linked to multiple environmental factors; however, to what extent these factors act as generalized cues across multiple species and large spatial scales is unknown. We used a unique dataset of coral spawning from 34 reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans to test if month of spawning and peak spawning month in assemblages of Acropora spp. can be predicted by sea surface temperature (SST), photosynthetically available radiation, wind speed, current speed, rainfall or sunset time. Contrary to the classic view that high mean SST initiates coral spawning, we found rapid increases in SST to be the best predictor in both cases (month of spawning: R2 = 0.73, peak: R2 = 0.62). Our findings suggest that a rapid increase in SST provides the dominant proximate cue for coral mass spawning over large geographical scales. We hypothesize that coral spawning is ultimately timed to ensure optimal fertilization success.

Résumé : Pearl oysters belonging to the genus Pinctada (Bivalvia: Pteriidae) are widely distributed between the Indo-Pacific and western Atlantic. The existence of both widely distributed and more restricted species makes this group a suitable model to study diversification patterns and prevailing modes of speciation. Phylogenies of eight out of the 11 currently recognised Pinctada species using mitochondrial (cox1) and nuclear (18S rRNA) data yielded two monophyletic groups that correspond to shell size and presence/absence of hinge teeth. Character trace of these morphological characters onto the molecular phylogeny revealed a strong correlation. Pinctada margaritifera appears polyphyletic with specimens from Mauritius grouping in a different clade from others of the French Polynesia and Japan. Hence, P. margaritifera might represent a species complex, and specimens from Mauritius could represent a different species. Regarding the putative species complex Pinctada fucata/Pinctada martensii/Pinctada radiata/Pinctada imbricata, our molecular analyses question the taxonomic validity of the morphological characters used to discriminate P. fucata and P. martensii that exhibited the lowest genetic divergence and are most likely conspecific as they clustered together. P. radiata and P. imbricata were recovered as monophyletic. The absence of overlapping distributions between sister lineages and the observed isolation by distance suggests that allopatry is the prevailing speciation mode in Pinctada. Bayesian dating analysis indicated a Miocene origin for the genus, which is consistent with the fossil record. The northward movement of the Australian plate throughout the Miocene played an important role in the diversification process within Pinctada.

Résumé : The analysis of fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS) within populations can provide insights into eco-evolutionary processes. Restricted dispersal and locally occurring genetic drift are the primary causes for FSGS at equilibrium, as described in the isolation by distance (IBD) model. Beyond IBD expectations, spatial, environmental or historical factors can affect FSGS. We examined FSGS in seven African and Neotropical populations of the late-successional rain forest tree Symphonia globulifera L. f. (Clusiaceae) to discriminate the influence of drift-dispersal vs. landscape/ecological features and historical processes on FSGS. We used spatial principal component analysis and Bayesian clustering to assess spatial genetic heterogeneity at SSRs and examined its association with plastid DNA and habitat features. African populations (from Cameroon and São Tomé) displayed a stronger FSGS than Neotropical populations at both marker types (mean Sp = 0.025 vs. Sp = 0.008 at SSRs) and had a stronger spatial genetic heterogeneity. All three African populations occurred in pronounced altitudinal gradients, possibly restricting animal-mediated seed dispersal. Cyto-nuclear disequilibria in Cameroonian populations also suggested a legacy of biogeographic history to explain these genetic patterns. Conversely, Neotropical populations exhibited a weaker FSGS, which may reflect more efficient wide-ranging seed dispersal by Neotropical bats and other dispersers. The population from French Guiana displayed an association of plastid haplotypes with two morphotypes characterized by differential habitat preferences. Our results highlight the importance of the microenvironment for eco-evolutionary processes within persistent tropical tree populations.

Résumé : This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices were used in order to characterise the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The data were provided by yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for stock assessment. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are included in the analysis when the index values are available from the published literature (North Sea, Scotian Shelf, Kenya, French Guyana). From the diversity indices analysis it is argued that the Gulf of Lions community is more diverse and less disturbed than the Bay of Biscay one. This result is not consistent with a fishing effect. It is interpreted as a biogeography pattern. The total biomass variability and the slope variability of size spectra are higher in the most harvested areas than in the least ones. On the contrary, the species-area slope is the lowest in the most harvested areas. Theoretically, biotic interactions decrease the total biomass variability and the spectra slope variability because of compensations, and increase the species area slope because of competitive exclusion. It is concluded that harvesting alters biotic interactions and favours local coexistence by decreasing competitive exclusion. The species diversity maintenance depends on competitive exclusion. Hence, biodiversity is threatened not only by a direct fishing effect but also by a dynamics alteration.
Ce mémoire aborde le problème de l'impact de l'exploitation par la pêche sur la dynamique de diversité des peuplements de poissons démersaux. Les effets de la pêche sur le rôle des interactions biotiques entre espèces dans la dynamique des peuplements sont plus particulièrement analysés à l'aide de descripteurs multispécifiques. Les descripteurs utilisés sont les indices de diversité, la variabilité temporelle de la biomasse totale et de la pente multispécifique du spectre de poids et la pente des droites d'accumulation d'espèces mesurant la ségrégation spatiale. Les valeurs de ces indices sont calculées à partir des données de campagnes annuelles de chalutage de fond EVHOE, CHALIST et MEDITS, menées par l'IFREMER depuis 1983 pour évaluer les ressources halieutiques dans le golfe de Gascogne et dans le golfe du Lion. Les différences de caractéristiques de dynamique entre les deux peuplements révélées par ces descripteurs sont mises en relation avec un indice d'exploitation (valeur moyenne des débarquements annuels, divisée par la surface du plateau de la région concernée). D'autres régions ont été intégrées dans cette analyse lorsque les valeurs des indicateurs étaient disponibles dans la littérature (Mer du Nord, plateau de Nouvelle-Ecosse, Kenya et Guyane Française). Les indices de diversité utilisés permettent de mettre en évidence que le peuplement du golfe du Lion est plus diversifié et moins soumis à perturbations que celui du golfe de Gascogne. Ces caractéristiques semblent dues à l'histoire biogéographique de ces deux régions et non à un effet de la pêche. La variabilité de la biomasse totale et celle de la pente du spectre multispécifique augmentent depuis les régions les moins exploitées vers les plus exploitées. A l'inverse, la ségrégation spatiale diminue. En théorie, les interactions entre espèces diminuent la variabilité temporelle de la biomasse totale et de la pente du spectre multispécifique, à cause de compensations entre espèces, et augmentent la ségrégation spatiale par exclusion compétitive. L'interprétation donnée des résultats obtenus est ainsi une altération des interactions entre les espèces par l'exploitation. En prélevant de la biomasse, l'exploitation augmente la disponibilité des ressources pour les individus non pêchés. En conséquence, l'exclusion compétitive diminue et la coexistence locale des individus est facilitée. A long terme, la diversité est donc menacée, non seulement par raréfaction des espèces prélevées par l'exploitation mais aussi parce que les interactions sont altérées et que le maintien de la diversité en dépend pour partie.

Résumé : The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The North-Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Pycnogonida have been the focus in 1948 of a very comprehensive and documented review by J. W. Hedgpeth followed by a catalogue of the stations of the different expeditions which worked in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the studied species. Moreover, the work of Marcus (1940) on the South-American Pycnogonida is an excellent basis for the study of the tropical Atlantic Pycnogonida. Recently, J.-H. Stock (1954 a) published a preliminary study on Pycnogonida collected at small depths in the Caribbean. During the 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier", 15 species of Pycnogonida were collected at 16 stations which can be classified, from a biogeographic point of view, in five groups of unequal importance: the floating sargassum (8 stations), the Little Caribbean (5 stations), the Bermudas (1 station), the surroundings of Wood Hole (1 station), the banks of Newfoundland (1 station).
La croisière 1951 du « Président-Théodore-Tissier» a duré du 13 février au 30 juin 1951. Pendant ces quatre mois et demi, le navire, parti de Brest, s'est rendu successivement à Madère, aux Antilles française, aux Bermudes, à Woods Hole, à Halifax, sur les Bancs de Terre-Neuve, aux Açores, à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, et est rentré à Brest après avoir parcouru plus de 13.000 milles dan l'Atlantique Nord. Les Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique Nord-Ouest et des Antilles ont fait l'objet en 1948 d'une révision très complète et documentée de J. W. Hedgpeth suivie d'un catalogue des stations des différentes expéditions ayant travaillé dans l'Atlantique Nord et des espèces récoltées. Par ailleurs, le travail de Marcus (1940) sur les Pycnogonides sud-américains constitue une excellente base pour l'étude des Pycnogonides de l'Atlantique tropical. Enfin, tout récemment J.-H. Stock (1954 a) a publié une étude préliminaire des Pycnogonides récoltés à faible profondeur dans les Antilles. Leaf dark respiration (R-dark) represents an important component controlling the carbon balance in tropical forests. Here, we test how nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) affect R-dark and its relationship with photosynthesis using three widely separated tropical forests which differ in soil fertility.R-dark was measured on 431 rainforest canopy trees, from 182 species, in French Guiana, Peru and Australia. The variation in R-dark was examined in relation to leaf N and P content, leaf structure and maximum photosynthetic rates at ambient and saturating atmospheric CO2 concentration.We found that the site with the lowest fertility (French Guiana) exhibited greater rates of R-dark per unit leaf N, P and photosynthesis. The data from Australia, for which there were no phylogenetic overlaps with the samples from the South American sites, yielded the most distinct relationships of R-dark with the measured leaf traits.Our data indicate that no single universal scaling relationship accounts for variation in R-dark across this large biogeographical space. Variability between sites in the absolute rates of R-dark and the R-dark : photosynthesis ratio were driven by variations in N- and P-use efficiency, which were related to both taxonomic and environmental variability.

A closed depression is defined as a geomorphologic element where a sediment depository is encircled by hillslopes. Despite the fact that closed depressions are often the only stagnant water points in many European landscapes, few ecological researches on their plant assemblages have been done. The main goal of this study was to give first results of the environmental factors responsible for the vegetation composition, richness and rarity in the closed depressions of the Lorraine biogeographical district (Belgium, France and grand-duche de Luxembourg). We surveyed for plant presence 85 forest and 77 grassland closed depressions. For each site, wetland area, local environmental factors and regional connectivities registered. For each species, the Ellenberg values were compiled. To investigate the main source of variation in species composition and in species richness (including richness in rare species), Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analyses and Generalized Linear Models were respectively used. Species pools in forest (forest and preforest species) and in grassland (bog plants, pioneers, helophytes) were quite different. In both landscapes, a gradient from plants typical of basic high-productive soils to plants typical of acid low-productive soils reflects a shared successional gradient. The accumulation of organic matter allowed the establishment of Sphagnum spp., which slowly acidified the soil and thus acted as ecosystem engineers for the arrival of bog plants. Moreover, the species composition was additionally driven by the plant light tolerance in forests and by the plant water requirements in grasslands. Mechanisms of species accumulation (increase in species richness) were different in forests and in grasslands: respectively related to the plant light tolerance and to the wetland area. At the regional level, the averaged soil productivity was negatively related to the richness in rare species. Indeed, perennial highly-competitive plants such as Glyceria spp., Iris pseudacorus or Urtica dioica impeded the establishment of smaller and rarer species. At the habitat level, isolated closed depressions (due to either low connectivity or low grazing pressure) have more habitat rare species, giving evidences of dispersal limitation in plant assemblages of closed depressions.

Résumé : The Atlantic and Mediterranean members of the scorpaenidae family have always triggered numerous discussions about their reciprocious congenialities. Back in the (recent) days when the number of species known on the French coasts was still fairly low, the belonging of one species to such or such genus, as Helicolenus (Sebastes) dactylopterus DELAROCHE or Scorpaena maderensis Cuvier and Valenciennes, has been the subject of numerous articles of which the authors' conclusions might differ from one another, and even today light is still far from being shed on those topics. The difficulties met in the determination of scorpaenidae: similar general appearance, subtle differences, impossibility of comparing the samples with the types, incomplete or misinterpreted descriptions, have lead scientists to make hasty determinations resulting in: an even more complicated synonymy and incorrect data about the biogeography of the species. Thereby, the rockfish named Scorpaena rubellio by JORDAN and GUNN (I) is considered as a synonymous of S. maderensis Cuvier Valenciennes by J. R. NORMAN (2), and of S. porcus Linné by H. W. FOWLER (3). Likewise, the dispersion area of S. scrofa in Guinea, Niger and Sainte-Hélène, is caused by its confusion with other species such as S. stephanica, S. angolensis and S. scrofina. Les représentants de la famille des Scorpénidés dans l'Atlantique et la Méditerranée ont toujours donné lieu à de nombreuses discussions au sujet de leurs affinités réciproques. A l'époque encore récente où le nombre des espèces connues des côtes de France était encore très réduit, la place dans tel ou tel genre d'espèces telles que Helicolenus (Sebastes) dactylopterus DELAROCHE ou Scorpaena maderensis Cuvier et Valenciennes, par exemple, ont provoqué des séries d'articles où les conclusions des auteurs successifs n'étaient pas toujours concordantes, et aujourd'hui encore la lumière est loin d'être faite sur bien des points. Les difficultés que l'on rencontre dans la détermination des Scorpénidés : grande ressemblance générale, différences parfois difficiles à saisir, impossibilité de comparer les échantillons d'étude aux types, obligation de se contenter de descriptions incomplètes .ou mal interprétées, ont trop souvent entraîné les chercheurs à des déterminations trop hâtives ayant comme résultats : de compliquer la synonymie et de fausser plus ou moins complètement les données acquises sur la biogéographie d'une espèce. C'est ainsi que la Scorpène appelée Scorpaena rubellio par JORDAN et GUNN (Il est considérée comme synonyme de S. maderensis Cuvier Valenciennes par J. R. NORMAN (2), et de S. porcus Linné par H. W. FOWLER (3). De même l'extension de l'aire de dispersion de S. scrofa en Guinée, au Niger et à Sainte-Hélène, est due à des confusions avec des espèces différentes telles que S. stephanica, S. angolensis et S. scrofina. Résumé : Two new species of the deep-sea genus Acanthocope (A. carinata n. sp. et A. annata n. sp.) were collected in the North Atlantic abyssal plain. Phenetic relationships between the 10 species of this genus are studied utilising 34 morphological features by way of a numerical taxonomic approach (cluster and principal components analysis). Résumé : 1. Arthropods represent most of global biodiversity, with the highest diversity found in tropical rain forests. Nevertheless, we have a very incomplete understanding of how tropical arthropod communities are assembled. 2. We conducted a comprehensive mass sampling of arthropod communities within three major habitat types of lowland Amazonian rain forest, including terra firme clay, white-sand and seasonally flooded forests in Peru and French Guiana. We examined how taxonomic and functional composition (at the family level) differed across these habitat types in the two regions. 3. The overall arthropod community composition exhibited strong turnover among habitats and between regions. In particular, seasonally flooded forest habitats of both regions comprised unique assemblages. Overall, 17.7% (26 of 147) of arthropod families showed significant preferences for a particular habitat type. 4. We present a first reproducible arthropod functional classification among the 147 taxa based on similarity among 21 functional traits describing feeding source, major mouthparts and microhabitats inhabited by each taxon. We identified seven distinct functional groups whose relative abundance contrasted strongly across the three habitats, with sap and leaf feeders showing higher abundances in terra firme clay forest. 5. Our novel arthropod functional classification provides an important complement to link these contrasting patterns of composition to differences in forest functioning across geographical and environmental gradients. This study underlines that both environment and biogeographical processes are responsible for driving arthropod taxonomic composition while environmental filtering is the main driver of the variance in functional composition.

Résumé : [b]Aim[/b][br/] [br/] The phylogeographical history of Neotropical species can be difficult to reconstruct because of superimposed Neogene and Quaternary histories, and because of taxonomic uncertainty. We analysed range-wide genetic diversity in a widespread pioneer tree species, Jacaranda copaia (Aubl.) D. Don, to characterize phylogeographical structure, date the evolutionary relationships among lineages, and evaluate the role of dispersal and vicariance in establishing the present geographical range.[br/] [br/] [br/] [b]Location[/b][br/] [br/] Guiana Shield; central, southern and western Amazon Basin; Chocó region; Central America.[br/] [br/] [br/] [b]Methods[/b][br/] [br/] We analysed nine nuclear simple sequence repeat loci (nuSSR), eight chloroplast SSRs (cpSSR), and two cpDNA intergenic sequences in 341 adult trees. Genetic differentiation at nuSSRs was inferred using Bayesian clustering. Dating of chloroplast lineage divergence was obtained using a range of published mutation rates and Bayesian coalescence analyses. Population divergence dating was performed using an isolation-with-migration model for eight loci (one cp sequence and seven nuSSRs).[br/] [br/] [br/] [b]Results[/b][br/] [br/] Nuclear SSR variation identified three geographically overlapping clusters (nu-1, nu-2, nu-3). Twelve cpDNA haplotypes were clustered into two haplogroups (cp-1, cp-2) with the central Amazon harbouring the highest diversity. Molecular dating analysis suggests that cpDNA haplotype diversification started around the end of the Pliocene (2.61 Ma on average), whereas population divergence was more recent and occurred during the mid-Quaternary (point estimates between 357 and 436 ka).[br/] [br/] [br/] [b]Main conclusions[/b][br/] [br/] The genetic variation of J. copaia in the Neotropics was shaped mainly by Pleistocene events. Chloroplast diversity did not display the expected cis/trans Andean disjunction, indicating recent dispersal. Nuclear variation revealed that separate regions share a recent history, with a centre of diversity in the central Amazon Basin. The geographical pattern of diversity is congruent with the distribution of the two subspecies, J. copaia copaia and J. copaia spectabilis, and evidence of nuSSR admixture between the two taxa supports their classification as subspecies.

Résumé : The ichthyofauna of Reunion Island, Southwestern Indian Ocean, was sampled during several ecological and artisanal fisheries studies. Information from these investigations and from other sources were included to compile the present checklist of the marine fishes of the island. A total of 885 species belonging to 150 families was recorded. Nine species are known only from Reunion, indicating endemism of about 1.0%. The most speciose families (Labridae, Gobiidae, Serranidae, and Pomacentridae) were also among the most speciose at the neighbouring Mauritius Island (except gobiids), and, generally, on other islands in the Indian Ocean area (Maldives, Chagos, Madagascar and Christmas Island). The Gobiidae only represented 5.4% of the ichthyofauna, which was similar to the ratio for Aqaba (Red Sea), contrasting with 8.0% recorded for the Maldives, 13.0% at Chagos or other higher percentages recorded in the Pacific Ocean. The Apogonidae and Scaridae are relatively poorly diversified at Reunion, also in contrast with the Maldives, Madagascar, Chagos, Aqaba (Red Sea) and certain Pacific areas. The recent geological origins of Reunion Island and the low diversity of its marine biotopes are probably the most significant factors explaining both the total species richness and species richness of some major families.
L'ichtyofaune de l'île de La Réunion a été étudiée au cours de plusieurs travaux portant sur l'écologie des poissons et sur les pêcheries artisanales. Les informations issues de ces études, ainsi que d'autres sources, ont été compilées dans la présente liste des poissons marins de l'île. Un total de 885 espèces appartenant à 150 familles est recensé. Neuf espèces ne sont connues que de La Réunion, indiquant un endémisme proche de 1,0%. Les familles les plus diversifiées (Labridae, Gobiidae, Serranidae et Pomacentridae) sont aussi parmi les plus diversifiées à l'île Maurice voisine (à l'exception des Gobiidae), ainsi que dans d'autres îles de l'océan Indien (Maldives, Chagos, Madagascar et Christmas). Les Gobiidae ne représentent que 5,4% de l'ichtyofaune totale, ce qui est semblable à ce qui est connu à Aqaba (mer Rouge), mais contraste avec les 8,0% trouvés aux Maldives, les 13,0% trouvés aux Chagos ou d'autres pourcentages élevés dans l'océan Pacifique. Les Apogonidae et les Scaridae sont relativement peu diversifiés à La Réunion, ce qui contraste également avec ce qui est connu des Maldives, Madagascar, Chagos, la mer Rouge et certaines régions de l'océan Pacifique. Résumé : The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vent fauna, kilometres deep in the oceans, is a great achievement of 20th-century marine biology. The deep-sea hydrothermal food web does not directly depend on the sun's energy. Vent communities rely primarily on trophic associations between chemoautotrophic bacteria and consumers A small. number of endemic taxa are adapted to the inhospitable vent environments that are distributed along ridge crests. Where these vent communities originated and how they dispersed are among the important questions ecologists must answer. Here, by statistical analysis of the most comprehensive database ever assembled about deep-sea hydrothermal fauna, we delineate six major hydrothermal provinces in the world ocean and identify seven possible dispersal pathways between adjacent provinces. Our model suggests that the East-Pacific Rise may have played a pivotal role as a centre of dispersal for the hydrothermal fauna. Our data-driven conclusion will have to be tested by phylogenetic studies and completed by surveys of less-explored fields.
