Premiers essais d'élevage larvaire de l'ombrine subtropicale (red fish) Sciaenops ocellatus dans les conditions intensives en Martinique Auteur(s) : Soletchnik, Patrick Thouard, Emmanuel Goyard, Emmanuel Baisnee, D Baisnee, D Baisnee, D Yvon, C Baker, P Résumé : Two batches of red drum larvae were air shipped from hatcheries in the U.S.A. and stocked in two intensive tank experiments at densities oc 7 :.nd 2-3 larvae per liter. Food items include live rotifers, copepods, brine shrimps. squid and commercial fish pellets. Growth rates were similar in both experiments up to day 20 (12-1" mm) but differences in feeding schedules and an infestation by the dinoflagelate Amyloodinium sp. affected the growth from day 20 to 43 in the second trial. Significant mortalities occurred in the tanks during the first feeding period (days 2 to 7) and again from days 17 to 20 as the result of cannibalism. Survival between day 2 and day 44 was 44% in the first trial. Abnormal inflation of the swim bladder and infection with Amyloodinium sp. reduced the survival to 6-19% in the second. Phylogeography of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas, in the Southwest Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Bourjea, Jerome Lapegue, Sylvie Gagnevin, L Broderick, D Mortimer, J.a. Ciccione, S Roos, David Taquet, Coralie Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were used to analyse the population genetic structure of southwestern Indian Ocean green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations. Analysis of sequence variation over 396 bp of the mtDNA control region revealed seven haplotypes among 288 individuals from 10 nesting sites in the Southwest Indian Ocean. This is the first time that Atlantic Ocean haplotypes have been recorded among any Indo-Pacific nesting populations. Previous studies indicated that the Cape of Good Hope was a major biogeographical barrier between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because evidence for gene flow in the last 1.5 million years has yet to emerge. This study, by sampling localities adjacent to this barrier, demonstrates that recent gene flow has occurred from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean via the Cape of Good Hope. We also found compelling genetic evidence that green turtles nesting at the rookeries of the South Mozambique Channel (SMC) and those nesting in the North Mozambique Channel (NMC) belong to separate genetic stocks. Furthermore, the SMC could be subdivided in two different genetic stocks, one in Europa and the other one in Juan de Nova. We suggest that this particular genetic pattern along the Mozambique Channel is attributable to a recent colonization from the Atlantic Ocean and is maintained by oceanic conditions in the northern and southern Mozambique Channel that influence early stages in the green turtle life cycle. A worldwide review of purse seine fisheries on FADs Auteur(s) : Fonteneau, Alain Pallares, P Pianet, Renaud Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper develops a comparative overview of the development of Fish Aggregating Devices (or fads) by the tropical purse seine fisheries in various ocean areas (Atlantic, Indian, Western and Eastern Pacific Oceans). First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. Auteur(s) : Clavier, J Richard, O Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : Abundance and biomass of an unexploited ormer population in the vicinity of Saint-Malo (northern Brittany) are estimated using a stratified sampling technique. Examinations are made be diving at 200 sites. The mean biomass of the population is about 400 tons but the stock is not evenly distributed over the studied area: the greatest densities are observed on schist substrate. Size and weight frequency distribution reveal a "top-heave" structure due to an accumulation of old individuals with low production. Can fisheries-induced evolution shift reference points for fisheries management? Auteur(s) : Heino, Mikko Baulier, Loic Boukal, David S. Ernande, Bruno Johnston, Fiona D. Mollet, Fabian M. Pardoe, Heidi Therkildsen, Nina O. Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : Biological reference points are important tools for fisheries management. Reference points are not static, butmay change when a population's environment or the population itself changes. Fisheries-induced evolution is one mechanism that can alter population characteristics, leading to "shifting" reference points by modifying the underlying biological processes or by changing the perception of a fishery system. The former causes changes in "true" reference points, whereas the latter is caused by changes in the yardsticks used to quantify a system's status. Unaccounted shifts of either kind imply that reference points gradually lose their intended meaning. This can lead to increased precaution, which is safe, but potentially costly. Shifts can also occur in more perilous directions, such that actual risks are greater than anticipated. Our qualitative analysis suggests that all commonly used reference points are susceptible to shifting through fisheries-induced evolution, including the limit and "precautionary" reference points for spawning-stock biomass, B-lim and B-pa, and the target reference point for fishing mortality, F-0.1. Our findings call for increased awareness of fisheries-induced changes and highlight the value of always basing reference points on adequately updated information, to capture all changes in the biological processes that drive fish population dynamics. This study was supported by the Atlantic working site of the « Programme National d’Océanographie Côtière » (PNOC, PNEC since 1999). The objectives were (1) to check the existence and to understand the mechanisms of winter phytoplankton blooms in the bay of Biscay influenced by the Gironde waters (2) to determine the limiting nutrient of the primary production associated to these blooms and to follow the seasonal evolution of the limiting nutrient, (3) to understand the consequences of this early limitation on the structuration of algal populations in spring. Since phosphorus was supposed to be the major limiting nutrient of algal growth in the Gironde plume, the different forms of the phosphorus cycle as well as the bacterial compartment, central in this cycle, were also studied in term of stocks and fluxes. The sampling strategy consisted in three cruises in 1998, BIOMET 2 (January), BIOMET 3 (beginning of March), PEGASE (June) and six cruises in 1999, PLAGIA 1 to 6 (late February, late April, late May, late June, the middle of July and the beginning of October). Winter algal blooms, essentially diatoms, were actually observed both in the typical waters of the plume (S < 34.5) and at the limit of the plume and adjacent atlantic oceanic waters (S > 34.5) in the successives years 1998 and 1999. These blooms were initiated by the occurrence of short anticyclonic windows in winter, acting on physical processes which dominate the evolution and characteristics of the Gironde plume (runoff, wind direction and speed) and, ultimately, on the evolution of the depth of the mixed layer (haline stratification) and available light (decrease of turbidity). The algal growth was actually phosphorus limited in the typical waters of the plume at the end of the winter bloom, in spring and became nitrogen and phosphorus limited in summer until the first autumn gales restored the nutritive balance. More oceanic waters (S > 34.5) were probably N+P limited from the end of the winter-the beginning of spring to autumn. Phosphorus limitation of winter blooms, associated with girondine unbalanced nutritive supplies (high NO3/PO4 ratios) favoured the development of small cells at the beginning of spring and the later presence of spring blooms (June 1998, late May 1999) composed of pico and nanophytoplankton (nanoflagellates), instead of typical diatom spring blooms for temperate waters. This size reduction of algal communities is strongthened by the competition between phytoplankton and bacteria for the phosphate uptake, bacteria being more competitives at low concentrations and being phosphorus limited sometimes in spring. The decreasing size of algal cells probably acted on the structuration of the whole food web. The study of the different forms of phosphorus displayed the importance of the Dissolved Organic Phosphorus (DOP) pool. The potential biological lability and the capacity of algae and bacteria to use the DOP in spring when phosphate are undetectable was shown by the very high specific activities of alkaline phosphatases and the very rapid cycling of phosphate monoesters. According to the few estimations of actual phosphatasic activity and phosphate assimilation fluxes, the hydrolysis of DOP associated with the coupled assimilation of liberated phosphate would represent 91 to 99 % of the phosphorus fluxes into algal and bacterial cells when phosphate were exhausted. In such conditions DOP could satisfy most of microorganisms phosphorus needs. The skipjack fishery in Eastern Indonesia: distinguishing the effects of increasing effort and deploying rumpon FADs on the stock Auteur(s) : Monintja, Dr Mathews, Cp Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Rumpons, (fads) were widely deployed in Indonesia in the eighties. In the Halmahera area, rumpon increased cpue by 41% , landings of fish per ton of live bait increased by 24%, the consumption of diesel oil for tuna catches reduced by 46%, and profits increased from Rp 10 to 60 million by boat per year1. Tuna aggregation around rumpon increased catchability by more than 40% compared to free swimming tuna. The Halmahera skipjack fishery was assessed by combining catch and effort data from rumpon and pre-rumpon areas of the fishery, and showed that controlled effort could increase landings of approximately 15,000 t per year. Tagging data show that the Halmahera skipjack fishery is probably supported by a local unit stock. Philippine rumpons (payaos) were fished with small mesh purse seine and ring nets fishing small sized tunas 12-35 cm fl (40-50% of landings) and caused recruitment overfishing. Indonesian rumpons were fished with pole-and-line causing neither recruitment nor growth overfishing. Les pycnogonides de la croisière 1951 du « Président Théodore Tissier » Auteur(s) : Bourdillon, A Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The North-Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Pycnogonida have been the focus in 1948 of a very comprehensive and documented review by J. W. Hedgpeth followed by a catalogue of the stations of the different expeditions which worked in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the studied species. Moreover, the work of Marcus (1940) on the South-American Pycnogonida is an excellent basis for the study of the tropical Atlantic Pycnogonida. Recently, J.-H. Stock (1954 a) published a preliminary study on Pycnogonida collected at small depths in the Caribbean. During the 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier", 15 species of Pycnogonida were collected at 16 stations which can be classified, from a biogeographic point of view, in five groups of unequal importance: the floating sargassum (8 stations), the Little Caribbean (5 stations), the Bermudas (1 station), the surroundings of Wood Hole (1 station), the banks of Newfoundland (1 station). Evolutionary impact assessment: accounting for evolutionary consequences of fishing in an ecosystem approach to fisheries management Auteur(s) : Laugen, Ane Engelhard, Georg Whitlock, Rebecca Arlinghaus, Robert Dankel, Dorothy J. Dunlop, Erin S. Eikeset, Anne M. Enberg, Katja Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : Managing fisheries resources to maintain healthy ecosystems is one of the main goals of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. One aspect that has received substantial scientific attention recently is fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). Increasing evidence indicates that intensive fishing has the potential to exert strong directional selection on life-history traits, behaviour, physiology, and morphology of exploited fish. Of particular concern is that reversing evolutionary responses to fishing can be much more difficult than reversing demographic or phenotypically plastic responses. Furthermore, like climate change, multiple agents cause FIE, with effects accumulating over time. Consequently, FIE may alter the utility derived from fish stocks, which in turn can modify the monetary value living aquatic resources provide to society. Quantifying and predicting the evolutionary effects of fishing is therefore important for both ecological and economic reasons. An important reason this is not happening is the lack of an appropriate assessment framework. We therefore describe the evolutionary impact assessment (EvoIA) as a structured approach for assessing the evolutionary consequences of fishing and evaluating the predicted evolutionary outcomes of alternative management options. EvoIA can contribute to EAF by clarifying how evolution may alter stock properties and ecological relations, support the precautionary approach to fisheries management by addressing a previously overlooked source of uncertainty and risk, and thus contribute to sustainable fisheries. ISBN-13 978-2-84433-047-5 ISBN-10 978-2-84433-047-5 Résumé : The international symposium "Tuna Fishing and Fish Aggregating Devices " , October 1999, in Martinique, takes stock of the exploitation of large pelagic fish around FADs, based on regional synthesis for the three oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Main themes include technology, fishing methods, impact on resources, biology of fish aggregation, anthropology and economic aspects of FAD exploitation. The meeting will gather and disseminate results from recent and ongoing studies on FADs in the different oceans of the world, enhance collaboration between scientists and managers involved in the development of FADs, promote the emergence of scientific and technical research, form a network for cooperation and enhance communications between researchers in the different locations concerned.
Crustaces profonds captures aux casiers aux Antilles françaises - 1996 Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations carried out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks are not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura and to the orders Isopoda and Amphipoda. It is intended for fishermen and other socio-professionals of the fishing industry. It should enable them to identify and name these previously unexploited varieties of Crustacea to facilitate their sale in local markets. Bilan et perspectives de developpement des DCP au Cap-Vert Auteur(s) : Rey-valette, H Martins, P Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : A new programme concerning the experimentation of about thirty Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is to start in the Cape Verde Islands at the end of 1999. In this context, this communication is intended: - to evaluate the halieutic, economic and social conditions of the artisanal fishery in this archipelago, notably in terms of assets and constraints. Although these conditions are very heterogeneous depending on islands, the fads seem to be able to help the stabilization and the development of the fishing activities, disadvantaged by a low productivity, limited operating ranges of boats, and very irregular outings at sea. But the narrowness of the domestic market is likely to cause drops in the fish prices if the production increases, while the absence of institutional framework may be a handicap at the level of the management (of the programme itself, and/or of some possible conflicts of uses); - to carry out an assessment of the former experiments. It emphasized the insufficiency of the follow-up and the maintenance of the structures, of which the lifespan varied at the most between four and six months, as well as the positive effects of the concentration, and the interest of the fishermen already sensitized with these structures. Applications to fish and shrimp rearing Auteur(s) : Hussenot, Jerome Lefebvre, Sebastien Martin, Jean-louis Éditeur(s) : Man and Coastal Areas – Towards a sustainable Aquaculture, May 2000 Résumé : Fish culture (seabass, turbot...) on the French metropolitan coast, and shrimp culture in the overseas territories (essentially New Caledonia and Tahiti) are subject to a regular development through land based farms. Three thematic of research on aquaculture ponds are carried out in CREMA-L’Houmeau, in collaboration with producers. The aim of the first one is to determine the optimal rearing conditions (stocking density, water renewal rate, input of oxygen, rate of feeding...) which allow to minimise the quantity of wastes for a similar final biomass. The second part aims to reduce the nutrient loading in the effluent, through open-air treatments: sedimentation ponds, foam fractionation, mass production of phytoplankton, and rearing of molluscs on the produced phytoplankton. The third part concerns research aiming to model the “ production - treatment - valorisation ” relationships. Maturation and spawning in captivity of penaeid shrimps Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 6 th Annual Meeting of World Mariculture Society Résumé : As no indigenous species of commercial penaeid shrimp live in the waters of French Po1ynesia, the pre1iminary step in deve10ping shrimp aquaculture was to obtain maturation and spawning in captivity. Five species have been investigated. Wi1d-caught juveni1es from the New Ca1edonia 1agoon (f. merguiensis, f. semisulcatus, ~. ensis) and post1arvae from the Ga1veston NMFS 1aboratory (P. aztecus) and Fujinaga Institute (f. japonicus) have been used to-obtain adu1t stock. Shrimps are reared in circu1ar tanks of 12 m3 with a continuous water circulation through a coral sand bed. Rate of exchange is from 1 to 3 times a day. Throughout the year water temperature is between 25 and 29 C, sa1inity around 34.5 ppt, and pH 8.2. Solar energy is reduced by shade covers. Artificial pellets of different composition are given as food. In these conditions we have obtained: 1) about 1,000 spawnings and two generations in captivity from September 1973 to September 1974 with f. merguiensis; 2) spawnings of ~. ensis in 1973; 3) four spawnings of f. japonicus in September 1974; 4) about 20 spawnings of P. aztecus, but only aftcr removing one eyestalk; 5) maturation signs in P. semizulcatus but no spawning. Experiments on larval rearing and growth of these species are in progress. Do FADs influence the geographical distribution of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus)? Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Reynal, Lionel Laurans, Martial Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Unlike recent studies of dolphinfish migration in the Caribbean, which tend to show an annual migration pattern with a seasonal passage through the French West Indies, the experimental fishing surveys done over more than a year on a monthly basis on a single cohort, show that the migratory pattern of part of the regional stock could be disrupted. This analysis has made it possible to estimate an average growth rate for this species during the first year of life. Contribution à l'amélioration des survies et performances de reproduction de L. stylirostris en saison fraîche en Nouvelle-Calédonie Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Wabete, Nelly Lemaire, Pierrette Mailliez, Jean-rene Broutoi, Francis Chim, Liet Résumé : Since 1993, the New Caledonian shrimp industry has been faced with cold season mortality outbreaks of multifactorial origin. This pathology called “Syndrome 93” affects as well animals in grow-out ponds as broodstock after their transfer in maturation room, with up to 35% of mortality in 48 hours. From literature data and physiological studies on Litopenaeus stylirostris, several combinations of three abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity and feeding) have been tested during the breeders stocking period. This research allowed us to lower stress factors impact and to propose a transfer protocol which leads to an optimal physiological comfort of the animal. Results showed that survival rate is improved and spawning rates are twice higher. These findings have come up with a routine protocol of carrying out any transfer in a tank with water at temperature of 26°C, salinity of 26 ppt and no food supply during 48 hours. The use of this protocol in a commercial hatchery led to a significant broodstock survival improvement. Status of red drum culture in the USA Auteur(s) : Arnold, C Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques Ifremer, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 20 Feb - 4 Mar 1989, n°9, chap. 45, pp.486 Résumé : An overview of the methods of producing red drum are discussed. Although red drum culture is new compared to the culture of other species there is much interest in the production both in earthen ponds and in recirculating intensive systems. Various strategies for both methods will be discussed. This includes stocking rates, optimum growth, temperature, salinity and growth rates of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). De la maladie au bien-être, 20 ans d’évolution de la perception de la pathologie chez le loup d’élevage (Dicentrarchus labrax) Auteur(s) : Coeurdacier, Jean-luc Résumé : By looking at the common thread between 4 programs* in which the IFREMER Palavas (34, Languedoc-Roussillon region in France) station took part, this report show the evolution over 20 years in the perception of the pathology of farmed fish, and of the sea bass in particular (Dicentrarchus labrax).
During the 1990’s farming techniques became sufficiently reliable to enable to distinguish between problems of a zootechnical nature and those with a pathological origin. In anticipation of future illnesses, the necessary tools and monitoring were implemented in order to study the immune system of the sea bass. These methods arose from the recent creation of anti-immunoglobin monoclonal probes in the sea bass.
These techniques, together with others, served to search for a solution to the nodavirus epidemic which struck in1996. In the absence of a cure for this virus, the research focused on knowledge of the virus, its epidemiology and vaccine development. Despite interesting scientific results, the solution withheld to curb the Nodavirus epidemic was zootechnical. This pragmatic outcome catalysed reflections on the role of pathology, leading to notions of health, animal well-being and image. Management choices in the health of farmed fish stocks became a parameter, amongst others, included in a global commercial and farming policy.

In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors were examined: the effects of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and temperature effects. A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of the larval population. The results show that high polymorphic microsatellite-based family assignment is a powerful tool for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Culling by selective sieving is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale, but also represents a substantial risk for diversity loss if parentage assignment is not introduced as a breeding practice. Settlement of slow growing larvae contributes to minimizing the variability of reproductive success and therefore to maximizing genetic diversity. These results corroborate the lower estimations of variability made on broodstocks from French commercial hatcheries relative to natural populations. Temperature exerts an influence on the expression of genetic variability for larval growth. A temperature of 26°C, coupled with culling could amplify the selective effect. Furthermore, selection of fast growing larvae has proven to counteract inbreeding depression at this stage. Genetic effects of intensive rearing conditions are significant and should be taken into account in hatchery practices, especially in terms of genetic diversity management.
