Whilst it used to affect mostly intravenous drug users and patients who underwent valvular surgery with suboptimal infection control procedures, fungal endocarditis is now mostly observed in patients with severe immunodeficiency (onco-haematology), in association with chronic central venous access and broad-spectrum antibiotic use. The incidence of fungal endocarditis has probably decreased in most developed countries with access to harm-reduction policies (i.e. needle exchange programmes) and with improved infection control procedures during cardiac surgery. Use of specific blood culture bottles for diagnosis of fungal endocarditis has decreased due to optimisation of media and automated culture systems. Meanwhile, the advent of rapid techniques, including fungal antigen detection (galactomannan, mannan/anti-mannan antibodies and β-1,3-d-glucans) and PCR (e.g. universal fungal PCR targeting 18S rRNA genes), shall improve sensitivity and reduce diagnostics delays, although limited data are available on their use for the diagnosis of fungal endocarditis. New antifungal agents available since the early 2000s may represent dramatic improvement for fungal endocarditis: (i) a new class, the echinocandins, has the potential to improve the management of Candida endocarditis owing to its fungicidal effect on yeasts as well as tolerability of increased dosages; and (ii) improved survival in patients with invasive aspergillosis with voriconazole compared with amphotericin B, and this may apply to Aspergillus sp. endocarditis as well, although its prognosis remains dismal. These achievements may allow selected patients to be cured with prolonged medical treatment alone when surgery is considered too risky.

Résumé : The section of the Liguro-Provencal basin north of the Balearic Islands is one of the most productive sites in the whole Mediterranean Sea, with intense phytoplankton bloom lasting about 2 months in late winter-early spring. The phytoplankton species composition of the area was investigated using light and electron microscopy to analyze bottle and net samples collected at several stations in spring 2000 and 2003. Serial dilution cultures established from bottle samples were also examined. A total of 168 phytoplankton taxa was identified, consisting of 73 Coscinodiscophyceae, 47 Dinophyceae, 25 Coccolithophyceae and 4 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae, 2 Cryptophyceae, 2 Dictyochophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 1 Pelagophyceae, 1 Choanoflagellidea, 1 Filosea and 3 incertae sedis. We also provided a brief taxonomic description and original micrographs for 25 of the smallest and/or less known species identified in the study area, which may go undetected during routine microscopical analysis of fixed samples. Among these, 10 species were recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, confirming the need of detailed studies to reveal the biodiversity and biogeography of Mediterranean phytoplankton.

Résumé : The caledonian blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is the second largest export commodity in New Caledonia. This industry is based on 19 production farms but also four hatcheries, two feed production units and two packing plants. The maximum production was reached in 2005 with 2400 tons. Supply of juveniles by hatchery is the bottle neck of the production chain because this species is not present in the natural environment. Recent problems of larval survival led some scientists to work on eco-physiology to propose adaptations of larval rearing protocol. Salinity of the rearing environment is taken as an example to study the influence of abiotic parameters on the animal physiology according to its development stage. The influence of salinity on survival and growth was evaluated at different development stages in Litopenaeus stylirostris. The study showed that ocean salinity (33-35 ppt) should be maintained during the larval stage, but after the post-larval metamorphosis, better growth could be achieved by lowering the salinity gradually to 27 ppt. This measure is now applied routinely in the Saint Vincent's hatchery and is the result of research in eco-physiology showing that the blue shrimp iso-osmotic point is around 27 ppt.
La crevette bleue calédonienne Litopenaeus stylirostris est au deuxième rang des produits exportés en Nouvelle-Calédonie. L’industrie crevetticole calédonienne est basée sur 19 fermes de production mais également 4 écloseries, 2 provendiers et 2 usines de conditionnement. La production maximale a été atteinte en 2005 avec 2400 tonnes. La fourniture de juvéniles par les écloseries est le point crucial de la chaîne de production car cette espèce n’est pas présente dans le milieu naturel. Les récents problèmes de survie larvaire ont orienté une partie de la recherche vers l’éco-physiologie en vue de proposer des adaptations du protocole d’élevage. La salinité du milieu d’élevage est prise comme exemple pour étudier l’influence d’un paramètre abiotique sur la physiologie de l’animal en fonction de son stade de développement. L’influence de la salinité sur la survie et la croissance a été évaluée aux différents stades de développement chez Litopenaeus stylirostris. L'étude a permis de montrer que la salinité océanique (33-35 ppt) devait être maintenue durant la phase larvaire mais qu'après la métamorphose en post-larve, une meilleure croissance pouvait être obtenue en abaissant la salinité progressivement à 27 ppt. Cette mesure est maintenant appliquée en routine en élevage larvaire à l'écloserie de Saint-Vincent et découle des recherches menées en éco-physiologie qui situe le point iso-osmotique de la crevette bleue autour de 27 ppt.
